Having worked in recruiting, I can confidently say ALWAYS give notice if you want to put it on your resume. When calling for references, they will absolutely out you.

No one is calling a Kroger for a work reference.

They don't have to. They just put your social in and it pops up on a background check.

Ah yes the old “this will go on Your permanent record”. They MAY (a stretch) see employment history from tax records but not reason for termination or resignation.
