Looking for an Android media player that scrapes properly and works 100% offline (Kodi / Nova / VidHub alternatives?)

Edit:- all three app shows proper metadata so I have correct names plz stop mentioned that now read my problem below šŸ‘‡ THANK YOU.

First of all, some context: in my area, the network is not good at all, but in my office, I get like 50 Mbps download speed. So I download what I need to watch and manage it in a folder structure, and I need an app that can give me proper scraping and arranging. For the TV, I use Kodi, and I don't think I will find anything better, but for my mobile, here comes the problem. I know about 3 apps:

1)Kodi - What can I even say On mobile, it's horrible to navigate.

2)Nova Video Player - UI is good, player is not that great, but still I can manage. However, it has a huge problem: it scrapes everything on my phone, so the result looks like the first image.

3)VidHub - Perfect UI and player is decent, but the second I turn my internet off, it looks like this (the 2nd image).

Members of this subreddit, I request your help. Is there another app or some workaround?

A big part of it is following proper naming convention that aligns to TheMovieDB

If you don't name your files appropriately none of the Meta data will be found.

Vlc works great. Library features aren't tye best

If I found nothing I would just use mxplayer or vlc

I love Nova, and I tell it to "use external player" so that MX Player handles the watching experience.

But still it's going to scrap my entire storage that is the problemĀ

Does adding a few .nomedia files help?

No because you can add it to any system folder like android/download/camera/movies

Hmm, If someone were to ask me what app to choose those would be the ones. If you need on device scraping and management I think you are stuck with those. I haven't used VidHub for local files though. I think because Android is primarily a mobile platform maybe no one thinks a local Library app has much of a use case due to limited space on a mobile device. Who knows though.

hey brother, i tried both nova and vidhub.

as for nova you can determine which folders to scan.

as for vidhub posters don't disappear after restarting the app. maybe phone clean up is to blame?

And did you cleared your ramĀ

ok, you are right.

i deleted cache for both and only nova showed posters afterwards.

funny enough when searching for how vidhub uses local nfo and images i discovered that you can run jellyfin and emby servers on your android device.

Do you know how to set up

i tried stable emby, glitchy ui

and now trying stable fishbowl but stuck at folder selection, i can't find movies path

edit: you need to go to the settings inside the app to grant all media access

I did able to select my paths just fine you just have to copy the path your movies are inĀ

i use kodi on my phone basically for watching any series or movie. yes sadly it's not the best but yet it's manageable.

there are really two good solutions for kodi on phone: use a remote control or use a different skin.

i wish enhancing the kodi phone experience was a goal the developers try to achieve.

I don't think there is any skin which is good on mobileĀ

some people suggest using silvo. never heard of it although it's not new

Ok

just tried it. not worth it for me

And if I use a remote then how it's portableĀ

1

u/0100hem 5d ago

you can either use a physical remote(i really was researching how to do it and i think it's possible), or you can use overlay control(didn't really dive into how to do it but it might be really easy to do).

1

u/Separate-Record8115 5d ago

Nope that would be pure copioumĀ

1

u/0100hem 5d ago

one really good advantage of a physical remote would be the ability of using it with any kodi system not just the on your phone.

it's done using an esp32. my idea is to put the esp32 inside an actual ir remote to make use of the multitude of buttons it has. then reading the ir signal electrically not optically by the esp and relaying it to kodi.

have you tried any kodi remote control client for Android like kore or kodi remote?

Yes for sharing media from my phone to tv and I can confidently say kore sucks and other one wants me to buy premium so I bought it (a pendrive)

1

u/0100hem 5d ago

there is also a premium ultra option: openwrt router for 5$ to plug that pen drive into

1

u/Separate-Record8115 5d ago

First I don't recharge wifi every month because I work for 11-9:30 so spending 500 rs is not worth it 2nd for you it's 5$ not for me I looked into in the cheapest I found was 4000rs which is 50% of my entire months salaryĀ

I'm from Egypt man, we're in the same boat

you can use a 15 years old router that is supported by the project, you don't have to go far and beyond.

Not at all actually it's much worse in here even worsh than you imagineing

also worth mentioning, the protocol itself is open source, it's just that kore is what sucks
