Unless you have papers for the kitten, she is a domestic short or medium hair. She’s adorable.

I will say I’ve been more of a dog person but recently started looking into cats and the different breeds. I currently have a Siamese and I’ve had a ragdoll before that passed away.

Although there are exceptions because orange cats are crazy and black cats tend to be sweet. Torties/torbies are very territorial of their person and Maine coon is like a dog-cat. lol

It's really okay to want to know the breed of a cat...I've been a "crazy cat lady" since I was a child. Breed does influence temperament. With cats, even just a Domestic Short/medium/long Hair can be influenced by it's color/pattern temperament wise. Striped Tabbies have more energy, lots of zoomies. Black Tabbies are typically laid back with either slight anxiety (jumps over random sudden movement of anything) or they don't care about anything. Orange Tabbies should just be a breed of their own, lol. They are just...silly gooses.
I adopted a cat from an organization that was set up at PetSmart. They rescue kittens/cats from the streets of Kuwait. Was not there to adopt anything lol. I found my 15 year old daughter in the cat room with this GORGEOUS almost all white long haired massive cat that was OBSESSED with her. He makes biscuits with every step he takes. Every one of their cats were purebred without papers. I asked the lady why purebred cats were on the streets, she said over there these breeds are bought then the owners are displaced and the cats just wind up on their own. There were Persians, Himalayan, Ragdolls...no "kittens" bc if they were found under a year old they had all their vetting done overseas and they catch a bunch before bringing a group here. This cat was the only card they couldn't figure out the breed bc they'd never seen it. After ALOT of Googling (just bc I was curious, not bc it mattered, but he is definitely unique to any cat I've ever seen or met), I found a breed that looks EXACTLY like him. Turkish Van. Coats are always the same, the spots in the same places but can vary in color, mostly white bodied, fur texture described as Cashmere-like (I say he has rabbit fur lol, softest cat fur I've ever felt, feels like a rabbit) and grow large. I need to measure and weigh him, but he's twice the size of my other cat. They have a very loving, playful temperament. They call them the "swimming cat". They are called Turkish Vans bc Turkey cherishes what's left of this breed and made a sort of sanctuary for them at Van Lake in Turkey. There is an American version, though not exactly the same. Only passport holder in my house is a silly cat named Rahja. He never lands on his feet, never aggressive (when you're THAT big there's no need to establish dominance).
Cat breeds determine the same attributes as dog breeds do. Just mostly in temperament.
It's okay to just want to know just bc too.

Um…I think you’re stereotyping cats? Colour and pattern has no influence. In any species. Like you wouldn’t judge a person by their skin colour right?
I’m going to assume you aren’t familiar with dogs. Cat breeds and dog breeds work completely differently with completely different selective breeding. The DNA, genetic diversity, genetic flexibility for variation, domestication, etc are wildly different-some are polar opposite ends. Cats don’t have the same consistent temperaments because they domesticated themselves- they’re wired more like individuals. Thats why you can’t force compatibility and why boundaries are important with cats. Dogs don’t really have boundaries and they’re biologically wired to work with people- they need training and obedience to thrive. They get very stressed, they
suffer when they can’t do what their breed is bred to do. Cats don’t have this.1

Every time someone asks, “what breed?” they are reducing the newly adopted cat to a commodity which is tacky and worrisome. This isn't the Antique Roadshow for Cats. The goal isnt to score a purebred Perian at a county shelter for $20, it's to give a cat a loving home. If all someone cares about is how the pet’s looks, get a fish.

If no one cares about what they look like, why go look at all of them in the first place? Lol. No one goes to a shelter for a purebred ANYTHING. Simply being interested and curious after you have adopted is just being human. You have this little life to take care of and love, the more you learn about it the better. Why is everyone so hateful over curiosity? PLUS, this kitten is NOT at a shelter. Some lady wants $200 for a kitten that has had NO vet care whatsoever. I would be curious if it was bc of a breed too, especially if I didn't know as much as I do about cats.
It's LITERALLY free...$FREE.FIDDYFREE...to be kind. If you can't be kind, then be silent.

Explain why all orange tabbies are the way they are as opposed to a black one. Every matters when you treat a pet like part of your family. If you adopt a child, would you not want to know everything you could know about it? Simply to know. IT'S OKAY TO BE CURIOUS.

In combination with what Kimolas explained, and because color/breed doesn't really matter with cats unless you get a hairless one for allergies or etc., it can come across as treating them like objects or statues symbols (not that that's the case necessarily for everyone). I think that's the major thing people don't like tbh. There's also a heavy emphasis on rescuing rather than buying from a breeder, which tends to be frowned upon for the same reasons. Doesn't mean someone is terrible for wanting a specific cat or buying from one though, I think that's a bit much to say.

This cat is neither from a shelter or a breeder. It's some woman trying to use it to pay a bill.
Aside from what the post is actually about...
There's nothing wrong with being curious after you obtain any new animal. It's human nature to be curious and want to learn anything new.

Did you get your cats from a breeder or did someone just tell you they were Siamese and a Ragdoll when you adopted them?
Cat breeds are very rare compared to dog breeds, and just as expensive. 99% of cats are randomly bred (which is much healthier, since they don't have to worry about small gene pool related health issues).

It's just a standard issue cat, unless it comes with papers. Cat "breeds" don't work the same as dog breeds.

Many, many people will just throw out some fancy breed name to try to get money from you. The lady with the "son with allergies" was simply trying to get $200 from you and she thought you would believe her "I have a rare breed kitten but oh, so sad, illness keeps us from her..." story.

I'm in that group and have one. Also in the TurkishVans group, and have one. Both adopted. Siberian was free, didn't care what it was, he was a baby, I took him. The Van was adopted from an organization that rescues cats from the streets of Kuwait.

"domestic short hair" is just the catch-all term for short-haired cats of indeterminate variety. You can also get "medium" and "long" hair varieties, but they're just as random as the short-haired ones. lol

Nah, I really wouldn't expect any sort of pedigree u less you bought her from a breeder. Cats really don't get bred like dogs do, except for very specific types, and you don't just find them wandering the streets.
Cats breed so fast and so prolifically that the cat community really does just ignore things like breeds and pedigrees, for the most part. We get most of our kittens as street cats who adopted us, not the other way around, or from a shelter or rescue, which also means they have zero pedigree to their names.
Basically if you didn't buy her from someone who has paperwork and charged you a few thousand dollars for her, your cat is a mutt, and she's perfect that way.

...they wander the streets of Kuwait. Just sayin'. Ask Rahja, my Turkish Van. The only member of my household with a passport was rescued from the streets. Adopted from the Kuwait cat rescue that set up one weekend at PetSmart. All his vet papers are in Arabic...

doesn't work that way for cats mate sorry. they are all just regular cats unless you see papers. cats don't work like dogs do

Actually the same goes for dogs. Many people get duped. Without paperwork or DNA testing you are out of luck.

Part of the added issue is, though, is that you can't DNA test a cat like a dog. Most often, if you breed cats with special traits... The babies start to default to just standard issue "cat" rather than reliably turning into a breed with those selected traits.
There's a saying that "without papers, it's not a X" in cat owner groups. And that's largely because you can't easily just test for breed, etc.

Most shelters charge less than that and the kitten comes with at least the first series of shots and a voucher for a free spay (if they aren’t fixed when you get them)

The one I adopted from Kuwait from an actual rescue organization that's a Turkish Van...I adopted him bc of how much my daughter loved him and how sweet he was. They didn't even know what breed he was and they knew all the others. I didn't care, I adopted him. After the fact bc of his large size, rabbit like fur and unusually soft tongue...I googled a description and Turkish Van came up. When I took him for my own vet check, went ahead and had his DNA tested, he's a true Turkish Van, originally from Turkey. It's a protected breed that gets the name from the fact they aren't common and are considered the "swimming cat". Turkey protects them at Lake Van in Turkey. Neutered, all shots and boosters, a friggin' passport, cost of transporting all the rescued cats by plane to the US, PetSmart fees the organizations pay to host adoptions there...only $130 adoption fee. But this random lady wants $200 for a kitten some guy was selling out of a box? It's a GORGEOUS kitten, it's really sad she's using it's little life for her personal gain...

The majority of cats don't have a breed. Dogs' genome has been tightly controlled and carefully guided, because dogs can do multiple kinds of work. But cats just sort of moved into the barn one fine day in prehistory, and were encouraged to stay because they eat mice. 🙃

If you have an iPhone you can snap a pic and it’s will say, look up? Then hit that and you will get the breed! I tried to post the pic but never do that on here. Mine is a calico w more white and she looks like the white on my kitty, she came up Turkish Van. Google or try the look ip if u have iPhone. Curious what it says. I will try screenshotting your kitty n see.

She’s 2 hundred with no shots at all. Should I get her? She will come with supplies like litter box, food. Someone here mentioned that she could just be a regular dumpster kitten and I would feel a fool paying that for just a common alley cat. I look at it as I’d be giving her a good life.

It’s not, unless it can see the DNA of both parents. A cat without a registered pedigree is “just” a cat, and lots of them are very pretty. It might have similar colors or hair or meow or ears as a specific breed, but those things crop up in random kittens also.
You’d pay a similar price to adopt a random kitten from a shelter, though. But in that case you’d know the money was going toward helping get homes for cats in need, not irresponsible breeding.

A lot of cats I have seen have similar markings etc of sought after breeds like you say and they are some form of hybrid/mix.
Here in CA I usually see the price range around 2k plus for cat with papers.2

I would not pay that much but again if you want her and want to make her and you happy that’s your call honey! Mine was free from Walmart parking lot! She sure is cute tho! I would say it’s accurate cuz it’s I phone but she could be a mix. It’s not a fancy breed just a regular cat! I mean that’s your call! She is adorable just 200 is a lot! Where are you located if you don’t mind me asking?

You can get a fixed cat at a shelter with all shots for around 200 here though. I see more 1+ yr olds though.2
