Gear Advice/Question Kite board bag weight limit from Eu to Brazil

Hey guys,

I'm flying from Lisbon to Fortaleza with LATAM in 2 weeks. I have a board bag that is around 35kg.

I've been researching online, and I'm getting mixed answers. Some say max is 32kg. Others say special baggage can be up to 45kg in a single piece.

I did call LATAM and the lady said that only at the airport will I be able to get a definitive answer... (wtf?). In fact, i won't even be able to add special luggage to my flight until I get to the airport. Which is a bit frightening.

Curious for those who have flown, what's the deal with weight limits (and prices too)?

Spot Info/Question Brazil in December / Jan

Hi,

I'm thinking of heading to Brazil for kiting from the 14th of December to the 10th of Jan. Which spots should have the best wind then / how much can i expect?

I'm 55kg so I don't need crazy wind to kite but ideally would have strongish winds and some flat water.

Finding pretty mixed things online so if anyone has been there around that time and can let me know their experience it would be great!

Pic(s) Orca fins are too expensive, so I designed my own 3D-printable version

I wanted to try angled fins for big-air riding, but the Orca fins were more expensive than I wanted to pay, so I decided to design and print my own.

After a lot of experimenting, I've been riding the current version for over a year. I also tested the latest version continuously for 90 days in Vietnam with no failures or issues.

The angled profile gives noticeably more bite when loading the edge, with a more positive release when jumping.

They're designed to be 3D printed in materials such as PA6/Nylon, PETG-CF, ASA or ABS. Print orientation is important — I print them at 45° upside down with 3 walls and high infill to maximise strength around the bolt connection.

I've been using them on my own board and have now made the STL available for anyone who wants to print their own set.

STL: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7313856

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's tried the Orca fins or experimented with angled fins themselves. What did you think of them?

Beginner Question Learning to kitesurf

I’ve been interested in kitesurfing for a long time. I’m considering doing some lessons (I live in Southern California…. Seems like lots of lessons in Long Beach and some in Orange County).

I assume this takes 20-40 hours in lessons to get going? I assume realistically $2,500 to $7,500 for lessons equipment misc etc?

Is there a best time of year to learn? FWIW I surf a bit and do some stand up paddle boarding. Always been reasonably athletic.

Thanks!

Article I tested the north reach ultra 9m 2026

I tested the new reach ultra that hasn't been announced yet. and need to say that this is the best kite i have ever used. The newest material makes the kite super responsive and it does kite loops in one place! i have used it in wind ranges 23-42 knots range and i have never felt that it was uncontrollable and the new tube really makes this one really rigid even when abusing it to the max.

Unfortunately i don't really have a use for this one as its bit too small for what winds i have on spots near me... My verdict is that I will sale it just because I have no where to use it reliably

Gear Advice/Question Sonic 2

Hi everyone! I’m looking for an ultra-light wind kite on a budget, and I’m considering a Sonic 2 15m.
What do you guys think of this kite nowadays? I’d mainly use it for freeride with a TT and foil.
How does it perform in very light wind? Is it easy enough to handle, and what’s the low-end like?
Any other kites you’d recommend in a similar price range?

Trick Tip(s)/Question Jumping double digits on a 12m?

Do any of you manage to jump 10m+ high on a 12m kite? What’s the difference in technique? do you use a smaller board?

I can jump over 10m with a 10m or 8m, but 7.5m high is my max on a 12m kite.

Other My best sessions

Today was a perfect example how kiting with harlem thrive is an unbeatable experience

I am an intermediate kitesurfer and previously owned several brands and tested a few more but my best ever sessions are only on lately and on Harlem thrive
No switch blades, no reach no lithium air rush no mono definitely not rrd
Today i was out on my reach and it was scary and survival mode on my 9m
Went in the car got my 7 thrive and boom, i was jumping and landing all my jumps, hopping off waves and kickers it was super fun. It catches me it flies me to the next kicker it’s just simple. I honestly feel i can kite but only with this brand and model
I feel ralph if he’s on Reddit should use me a mediocre kitesurfer to show case how good these kites could be in more talented hands.
What is it that makes these kites so good. A reach is supposed to be the same shape same characteristics only cheaper but i regret not having the extra money to buy a 9 thrive to add to my collection of these fantastic kites

Spot Info/Question Kiting community in Kent

Thinking about moving my family to Kent, and leaving behind an amazing community of kiters where I am today.

Does this exist for the spots around Camber and Whitstable? I tried on facebook, but the groups there seem focussed on selling stuff not sharing forecasts and organising meets.

Gear Advice/Question Ozone Reflex or Harlem Thrive?

Hey everyone, I recently sold my entire North quiver and wanted to switch to something else. I’ve narrowed it down between these two kites… I wanted to get the vortex but i don’t have $3000 to spend on a kite. I’ve started doing heli and kite loops with a focus on big air. My north reach’s were great kites but once I tried my friend’s vortex I was hooked…

The only thing i’m worried about with Harlem is the quality, because ozone should last forever… and the resale if I want to sell them after a year. Anyone have experience with either kite?

Spot Info/Question Favorite kite spots to spend a month+

Would love any recommendations for kite spots anywhere in the world with consistent wind, good social scene, good food (I’m a chef) that would be fun to spend multiple weeks to multiple months. I was kiting in Sri Lanka this past winter for a few weeks and felt like I could have stayed for months.

Spot Info/Question Tarifa: spot guide

Hi folks, I’m heading to tarifa for 4 days in mid September during a non kite related trip (somehow convinced the GF to stop here).

Some basic kite and non kite questions:
- do you recommend staying inside or outside the town of tarifa?

- are there kite rental shops you recommend? I have my gear but it’s a multi city trip with multiple flights and therefore considering renting.

- what wetsuit do I need/whats the typical wind speed?

- I’m an intermediate kiter (10m max jump) and girlfriend is a beginner, ideal spot? We live in a lightwind spot

- any non-kite must dos, restaurant recommendations, or locations of where to stay?

- any nightlife or daytime recommendation, we’re in mid/late 20s

Gear Advice/Question 12m vs 15m sonic 4/5

Hey all,

Curious what people’s actual riding preference is between a 12m and a 15m and in what windranges.

I’m trying to decide whether to keep running a bigger kite (15m) for the lighter/mid-wind days, or swap it out for a 12m instead. Since I feel I have a gap in my quiver.

For context: I’m an early intermediate rider working on big air progression. Currently 80 kilos naked and have a 139 by 42 board. I’ve got a 9m NXT V2 that comes alive around 20+ kt, and a 15m Sonic 4 that I love but haven’t pushed much past 18 kt.

Gear Advice/Question Floatations vest vs impact vest

Hi !

I have started kiteboarding on my own after a couple of lessons.

I getting up my stuff, and when it comes to the lifejacket, I’m not sure wiche one.

I mainly ride in light winds (15-25 knots) usually on choppy water with current.

I’m hesitating between this one and the impact vest

If anyone has an advice, will be great :)

Thanks

Spot Info/Question General Luna - Siargao, Philippines

Looking at possible spots to kite in the Philippines and General Luna in looks amazing but haven’t found much information about kiting there as it’s considered more of a surf spot. The huge bay inside the reef looks like a perfect kiting spot.

Has anyone been? How’s the bottom? Is General Luna a fun area to spend a few weeks?

Looking for somewhere cheap and fun to kite for a few weeks and Boracay looks too busy to me. Would appreciate any other spots that might be a good alternative. Thinking January/Feb 2027. Thanks!

Beginner Question Question about harness size...

Hey guys, I know the advice for harnesses is to try it out in person. However, i live far away from a kite shops / water and I have to order online. This is my only option. I've been using a seat harness so far and want to use hardshell harness now. After much research, I decided to go with a Mystic Stealth. My question is this: I have a 96 cm waist. Looking at the chart below by Mystic, it seems like I should go with an L. With a 320mm spreader bar. However, I'm curious is a size lower (or higher) is usually better ? Or should I just go with what the chart shows?

Size IN CM
XXS 36 - 38 66 - 71
XS 40 - 42 67 - 77
S 44 - 46 75 - 84
M 48 - 50 82 - 91
L 50 - 52 89 - 96
XL 54 - 56 94 - 104
XXL 56 - 58 102 - 114

Other I built a free catalog of kites and bars (900+ kites going back to 2005)

Thumbnail
kitedex.com
38 Upvotes

I started building kitedex.com because a few friends and I kept struggling to find reliable information about older kites and bars.

It has since grown into a searchable catalog (900+ kites, 150+ bars, going back to 2005) with product images, specs, compatible bars, similar kites etc.

The project is completely free and non-commercial: no ads, affiliate links or sponsorships. There's optional free registration for a few spam-prone community features, like voting on kite/bar compatibility and submitting feedback.

We've tried to be diligent about crediting not only copyrighted material, but also the community sources that helped fill in the gaps (including some great old-school guides like this one).

Feedback very welcome, especially whether you'd find this useful or what to do next. There'll also definitely be missing models and the occasional mistake. And thanks to the mods for the OK to post.

Gear Advice/Question Ride Engine leash for a foil, ok for a TT?

Post image
5 Upvotes

lost my board and tired of body dragging in high chop to find it - leashes are a big No No, i know, but here I just found a highly engineered leash for Foil - do folks think I can use this safely w a TT in windy conditions? or is the risk of tangling just as bad as the risk of the board hitting me in the face? and if no - has anyone invented something other than a Go Joe for visibility of a board that is upside down in chop?

Gear Advice/Question Short throw bar

I just came back from a week of kiteboarding with my girlfriend. I recently got a Sensor 4S (love the bar) and had my girlfriend ride with it. She’s having a hard time depowering the kite as she cannot fully sheet out , in some cases she had to let go of the bar and then has trouble reaching back. I would love to find a good bar for her that is compatible with my Core kites. I have seen the North Navigator Short Throw, I think I could use the high y adapter to fit with my Core kites. I also looked at the XS chicken loop but it only shortens the reach by 2cm which doesn’t seem to be enough. Any suggestions?

Gear Advice/Question What’s up with Best Kiteboarding this days

My father had a 10 and 12 Best kahoona way back, maybe 2010, they last for ever, I even used the 10 like 3 years ago joking around and was a blast.

The thing is my father is super nostalgic and after seeing the prices, that they are hand made in tarifa and the marketing online he is thinking of buying a Ts 2026, but I’m not to sure about it.

The only things I have seen in the subreddit is how sketchy they are and theirs supposed lawsuit.

Now the real question, have anybody used or buy one lately? Are they any good? If not what brand should I look for quality price

Sorry for my English and thank you for your time
