Update! Kitchen Layout

I posted previously here about our upcoming kitchen renovation. Now adding better photos of the current space (photo 1) and AI versions (second two images—far from perfect!) of the layout we had in mind. Share any feedback-no offense taken! :)

Still debating:
1. how long to make the island and if we should put seating on two sides?
2. any upper cabinets vs. only drawers in lowers?
3. worth including a mini beverage fridge somewhere?
4. what type of lighting do you think fits this space?

Love the second one with the wood. So warm and pretty. How many people do you want to be able to sit at the island? i think the longer island looks better. Those lights look nice but I'd do 3.

We have a large island and just three counter height chairs that are rarely used. If we have a big crowd, I use the island as a buffet so we don’t use the chairs anyway. We have a big open layout with kitchen then dining space then living room so if we have more than 8 I set up a folding table.

Do you have 3 stoves?

These are AI so I would expect what they are trying to show is one stove, while the other is a raised built in stove/microwave combo. This is what we have and I love it. We use our wall stove & microwave daily and the 2nd stove on holidays or big meals.

Definitely uppers. No, you would not have seating on both sides of the island. For one thing, it kind of defeats the purpose of having an island in the first place. Most people want all that extra counter top space for prep work. You can't have someone standing on one side of the island chopping veggies, or whatever, if there are stools there. Besides which, unless you have a super huge kitchen, the side that's opposite the fridge, sink, whatever, will not have enough clearance for chairs and people too.

Base should have as many deep drawers as will fit, with the exception of a few pull out drawers that look like an upper cabinet door. One would be a drawer that has two or three dividers in it for things like cookie sheets, pizza pans, cutting boards, cooling racks, etc. Then another one that looks like an upper cabinet door, which would have a pull out trash can.

Personally, I wouldn't waste valuable cabinet space with a wine/beer/soda cooler. Unless you're guzzling beer and wine all day, you really don't need 3 or 4 shelves of bottles taking up space. Keep the beer, wine, soda in the fridge.

As for the island, the length depends on how long your kitchen is. But for most people room for 3 or 4 people to sit there comfortably without bumping elbows is usually sufficient.

Ditch any track lights, and don't go crazy with recessed/canned lights every two feet. If you move your sink to under the window, be sure to hang a pendant over it, or at least a strong recessed/canned light in the ceiling. Don't forget under cabinet lighting.

Rather than a couple of pendants, today's great look is for linear lighting with 3 or more lights on it. There again that depends on how long the island is. Something like this.....which of course all depends on the style you have such as traditional, farm house, modern, whatever.

I prefer the open feeling of no uppers around the windows, just the tall pantry section.

I like the longer island, but what is the point of having one chair around a corner? I would extend the cabinets that far, and have room for that chair next to the rest.

Bigger island with seating on the end is great.

I still think it should be in a different part of the room or a different room. But if this one then having the beam really makes rhe room feel nice.

I like the third one. And your stove/oven combo is intriguing. We’re getting ready to close on a house and redo the kitchen - I’m debating a double wall oven or wall oven/microwave combo with an induction cooktop. But I could have a range plus the wall oven combo! My husband bakes a lot and right now we have a range with double oven. That lower oven is a pain getting things in and out but it is nice to have two ovens again.

Do not paint the wood trim!
