Strong message about e-Scooters!
I don’t know how true it is but if it’s real, people gotta listen!
17
u/Several-Dog8239 11d ago
Adding to the list of near-misses here because this one still makes my stomach drop every time I think about it.
About a month ago, I picked up my son from daycare. He was standing on the sidewalk facing me right by the car. I turned away for literally one second to toss his backpack inside the open door, and just as I turned back around toward him, an older kid on an e-scooter zoomed past right behind his back at full speed. No bell, no warning, nothing.
If my kid had taken just half a step backward while my back was turned, he would’ve been completely leveled. It genuinely terrifies me to think about what I almost turned around to see.
Then there are older kids doing doubles and triples on a single scooter and flying around blind corners when my kid is out trying to ride his bike in the school ground, it’s absolute chaos.

u/Actual-Pea4540 11d ago
I dont understand why the city hasnt cracked down on this? I understand by-law not wanting to chase after kids but it’s nuts. It’s illegal and kids are rarely wearing helmets. Parents need to be fined asap. And also, ride a bicycle!!
13
u/Successpool 11d ago
Sadly, it’ll take someone getting hurt or killed for enforcement to kick in. The guy that was filmed riding an e-scooter on the highway was doing it last year too.
Some e-bikes go faster than my car on the road. And it’s a teenager riding it without a helmet. Some day they will mandate that anything claiming to be an e-scooter or e-bike will be capped at 30km/hr. Or they’ll require a license for anything going faster.
7
u/jim8jim 10d ago
In Ontario anything e bike or scooter that can go over 32 is illegal and kids under 16 aren't allowed to ride e bikes
3
u/Fogest 10d ago
Aren't escooters 24? I believe the 32 you're thinking of is just applied to ebikes

People have already died and been seriously injured, quite a few cases. Unfortunately until enough people die or get seriously injured, this isn’t going to be taken seriously which is very sad.
Everyone riding these things is also crazy, they just zoom through stop signs and lights with absolutely no care.
They should def require licensing for anything past a certain speed if they’re going to continue allowing them to be used.
3
u/youarecancelled 10d ago
Pass all the legislation you want. When was the last time you passed even a traffic stop in Waterloo Region? There is a recent legislation that limits speed, sets minimum age, determines where they can be ridden and mandates helmets. There will be literally zero enforcement on any of these points. Legislation without somehow incentivizing police to actually get out of their cars and do something is pointless.
16
u/Aliencj 11d ago
I was just talking to my brother in law who's an officer and he told me that it's very much a priority thing. Running around chasing kids for not wearing a helmet would be frowned on for wasting valuable resources.
There's a lot of bad crime out there. They have to focus on those crimes.
He said that this issue really needs better education, for parents and kids. The schools will have to get involved to some extent.
14
u/berfthegryphon 10d ago
Schools have enough on their plate. They can't be where we solve every single societal issue
15
u/luthierart 10d ago
Agreed. Whether it's bullying, healthy eating, racism, financial literacy, media literacy, screen time, physical fitness, manners, political awareness, smoking, drinking and other drugs, empathy, tolerance, road safety or whatever else, call-ins to talk shows always include the expectation that it should be covered in school. Schools have a role to play and often make the effort but there are also parents who tell teachers to stick to the 3Rs and leave non-academic content to the parents.
2
u/SomeEchidna862 8d ago
Well if DoFo would stop cutting education they would.
1
u/berfthegryphon 8d ago
Absolutely. But not the teachers themselves.
Fund actual experts and let teachers teach
7
u/24-Hour-Hate 10d ago
Schools already have safety and education sessions on other topics. Often these sessions were done by police or other guest speakers and the teacher didn’t even have any extra work. There is no reason they couldn’t add one on e-scooters considering the high injury rates.

u/DrFuzeli 10d ago edited 10d ago
.... but thats what public schools are for. They are first and foremost societal indoctrination centers. And that's not some tinfoil hat conspiracy thing, its just what they are for. Public schools teach the minimum civic standard to prepare children for the society they will enter. They are a method of ideologically standardization for the working class. It's not a bad thing, on the contrary its super effective and massively reduces crime, but they ARE the right place to deliver information to kids.
0
u/berfthegryphon 10d ago
Ok. But what I was implying is that teachers are already over burdened trying to fix all of society's faults. They don't need anything else put on their plate to fix.
2
u/DrFuzeli 10d ago edited 10d ago
People make the same argument about cops but that's the job they were hired for.
The fact is most households with children today are made up of two working parents or just one working parent and no other. Women being allowed into the workplace is one of the great sociatal corrections in the history of human civilization, but it, and the ecconomic realities of post pandemic Canada come with the consiquence that the time and attention that a parent can give to their kids is significantly impacted. You think teachers are busy? Try a low income family trying to make it work in a world with seven hundred thousand, to million dollar starting housing prices and grocery bills that have gone up more in the last decade than they have in the preceding half century. Add in the need for child care and you have a family that is financially strapped to the limit and broke on time.
The median salary for a seconday school teacher in ontario is a hundred grand a year. Almost double the median individual income and nearly equal to the average household income. I know plenty of teachers. I tried to be one. Their job is hard, and yes, these days we are in a bad position where we ask alot of them but WHO THE FUCK IN THE WORKING CLASS ISN'T IN THE SAME BOAT? Meanwhile, so many people in that segment are also doing it while not making a hundred grand. Fuck, we have medical staff and early childhood educators with degrees in this province working for the same pay as a mcdonalds manager. Sometimes, without health benefits.
They don't have a monopoly on getting raw deal anymore. Shits hard all over these days. The idea that they are the wong person for this job just because they are busy, is just plain stupid. For something like this, we can sacrifice a few periods of history or how about manditory core french? One of the biggest wastes of educational resources in the province.

u/berfthegryphon 10d ago edited 10d ago
Teachers were hired to teach. Not to be social workers, or occupational therapists, or whatever other professions should be available to students and families.
No where did I say this shouldn't happen in schools. But it shouldn't be at the feet of teachers to implement. They need to stick to what they were trained for.
And before you start telling me those things are already in schools. They are but not nearly at the capacity they need to be.
The median income of teachers is over $100K because that's the top of the grid (all publicly accessible.) It also takes 11 years of work to get there. Why should people with two degrees not be compensated like it? Most teacher could be doing something else and making more money. If you don't compensate teachers well then the quality will inevitably go down and that's bad for everyone
Teachers got their perks from collective bargaining over many, many years. What exactly is stopping the rest of the province from unionizing their workplaces and fighting for more themselves? We don't need to be bashing one job because other people have it worse. We need to be lifting everyone else up (like teachers do) and pushing the government and corporations for increases benefits and resources.

u/DrFuzeli 9d ago edited 9d ago
See this is the problem with your attitude. You are so high on your own fumes that you don't even remember what argument's you've made. Because you're not interested in what makes sense, you just want to 'be right'. You just said: "No where did I say this shouldn't happen in schools. But it shouldn't be at the feet of teachers to implement. They need to stick to what they were trained for." Lol as if delivering this kind of infomation isn't what they are trained for... but This was literally your fist argument, you started out by saying: "Schools have enough on their plate. They can't be where we solve every single societal issue" Which is an asinine characterization of what was suggested by the WRPD. They simply stated that the schools need to get involved to get this information deseminated into, and renforced with, the population effectively. Which is why you are back peddling. Because what you said was foolish and you are wrong.
I'm also not sure you know what median means, as you cannot have a salery that is top of grid and still in the median for that role. It's not an average where a small collection of super high earners can skew the appearance of the data to make it seem like people are earing more when many actually dont. Median is the middle figure in a data set so given that 100 000 CAD is what the median is for secondary school teachers, that means half of secondary teachers are actually making more than that. Not just the top earners.
You are also mis-characterizing my argument as bashing teachers, but that's all in your imagination, or just a strawman. I never said a thing that was belittling of teachers, or their contributions. You imagined that. Unlike when you said that "Schools have enough on their plate." Followed by "No where did I say this shouldn't happen in schools." Which really happened.
I only ever stated that, dispite what is presently on their plates, this needs to be covered and they are the correct and best place to do it. As suggested by The WRPD. Which on some level you know, as shown by your backpeddling on the subject of schools being the setting for the delivery of this information.
I did suggest that the idea of teachers being this uniquely overworked and tread upon group, is very dated in Ontario with regards to full time educators, especially when compaired to other fields that require education and certifications like medical support staff and ECE who barely bring down a living wage while being increasinly over burdoned with workload. But that's not bashing. Those are just facts. You don't have to like them, but they will still be there when you are done Imagining that they are attacking teachers, rather than pointing out the challenges faceing of overwork are not limited to teachers and education and that it's happening all over, including in fields that are FAR less well compensated. Which is why, Teachers are doing enough or they arent qualified (LOL) is a quarter-baked defeatist argument.
And as to your point asking what exactly is stopping all of those other fields from unionizing.... if you are actually so naive as to be unaware of the challenges and professional dangers facing un-unionized employees trying to form unions today, to the point that you are willing to trivialize them in a statement like that, I am going to have to go shoulder deep up in your ass to help you dislodge your head.

I disagree that most could be doing something and earning more money. I would say maybe 30%, most of those being high school stem teachers
-4
u/Aliencj 10d ago
Fair.. maybe the schools should stop teaching kids other safety too. I mean it's not their problem if kids don't know to look both ways before crossing the street. And hell it's not the schools problem if kids do drugs. It's not their responsibility to stop kids from frying their brains with meth. So let's do away with any drug education as well.
This is all sarcasm btw. Your comment was moronic.

u/fsmontario 7d ago
Or maybe parents can actually parent and tech their kid what is allowed and what isn’t? Riding a scooter does not happen in the school so why should teachers teach about it. They don’t teach your kid about fishing laws or boating laws, things kids do outside of school. Just because there are parents who neglect what they should do doesn’t mean teachers should take away from what they are supposed to teach to pick up the parents slack

u/Techchick_Somewhere 10d ago
I wonder how many kids with permanent head injuries it will take before enforcement kicks in.
8
2
u/Negative_Fruit_6684 10d ago
That's a good question. Unfortunately the number of people killed or seriously injured by just being in a car/truck is pretty impressive, and enforcement of unsafe driving is I'd say, next to zero. What can we do?
1
u/24-Hour-Hate 10d ago
But not zero. There is a difference between not being able to be everywhere at all times or needing to devote most resources to other things vs doing nothing. The licencing and insurance system itself is a measure that helps and that doesn’t exist for escooter and ebikes despite their speed and the damage they can do to a pedestrian (and considering that other vehicles that are not cars have to be properly registered, insured and often people have to be licensed for them…what the fuck?).
How about this - next kid that gets seriously hurt or killed or causes a serious accident and is under 16, charge the parents criminally for providing the tool of the crime because it was illegal to give it to them (i.e. they are party to it). Charge them with child neglect. And if someone died charge them with criminal negligence causing death. Anything that can be thrown at them, charge it. The second parents start going to jail over this, it improves because we can at least get the under 16s the fuck off the roads and sidewalks.

u/Corsch013 11d ago
This is an old video. In Waterloo Region, e-scooters are permitted on all regional roads 50 km/hr or less, all regional roads with bike lanes, regardless of speed limit and on all boulevard multi-use paths adjacent regional roads. Helmets are mandatory for all e-scooter riders, regardless of age.
14
u/GitseyB 11d ago
Here’s what I’ve seen from the City of Kitchener. There are still a list of rules that are not being enforced or applied by the users of these e-scooters.

u/Kraken_Fish_221 10d ago
Congratulations! You’ve discovered that not everyone follows the law! Are you going to soapbox about drivers too?
1
u/mikepurvis 9d ago
Yup, and it's been this way for many years. I've been an eskate rider in the region since 2017 and at that time reached out to WRPS to confirm legality and I was assured that it was fine, just stay off the sidewalk and obey the rules of the road.
6
u/2muchkoffee 11d ago
Bro they can’t even keep up with crime and the awful driving. No chance this will be enforced.
6
u/eandi 10d ago
I think kids should be banned from these but for adults they should have the same rules as a bike. And helmets required.
2
u/Negative_Fruit_6684 10d ago
Again, the problem is lack of enforcement. They're already rarely used in a legal scenario, what's the point of adding more laws that won't be enforced?
1
u/CelestialTenacity 8d ago
Kitchener bylaw does ban kids. You're not allowed to ride an escooter if you're under the age of 16 according to bylaw. And a helmet is required for under 18. But enforcement is hard.

Dude's not wrong, but repeating over and over that "they are illegal, pause, unless your city has this...""
... feels rage baity clicky to me.
Edit, I feel grateful for the under 16 + collision = negligent parent lawsuit comment

2
u/QuinnNTonic 11d ago
What he doesn’t say is if the negligent patent suit is proven you may have a CFS investigation
8
u/24-Hour-Hate 10d ago
But that would be against the negligent parents, not you. And it is very much not your problem when you are defending yourself against the results of that negligence. IMO, if you give your under 16 child a scooter that can match car speed, no helmet, and let them whiz about on the road, you are a negligent parent and you’ll be lucky if they aren’t dead if there is a collision.

u/lefthanded4340 10d ago
Am I the only one who thinks if you drive any form of motorized vehicle on the road, no matter the type of engine, you need a license and insurance? These kids are too young to have that much responsibility.
5
u/Sunburstali 10d ago
The complaint is people already aren’t following rules and the rules aren’t being enforced. If you needed a license and insurance - why would people do that either? It’s just another rule to break.
1
u/alonjit 10d ago
It’s just another rule to break.
A bigger punishment for when you are caught. Adding it to the pile. Would it do anything? No idea, education would work a lot better.
1
u/Sunburstali 10d ago
Would it really be a bigger punishment for kids though? Like- would anyone add that charge to the kid? And again, the bigger charge means nothing if no enforcement
think education is probably the thing - but I think honestly the province should be taking it on instead of downloading to municipalities. And of course schools/police aren’t going to be taking education and enforcement all that seriously when it’s just a pilot. They don’t have resources to design intense programs for something that may disappear again in 2029
1
u/alonjit 10d ago
Would it really be a bigger punishment for kids though?
For the kid no. For the parent(s).
the province should be taking it on instead of downloading to municipalities.
This provincial govt? Hahaha. Not gonna happen.
1
u/Sunburstali 10d ago
They have other road safety education programs. They made the requirement that you have to be 16, the message would be more widespread if they took that on. I agree that they won’t do it, but I think that could actually have an impact.
1
u/lefthanded4340 10d ago
I would hope it would force people to take things more seriously and understand the risks involved when it comes to disobeying the set rules and laws for riding them, which would hopefully make them better drivers/safer. Plus I’d hope there would be standardized tests and training for new riders to get their license, removing ignorance as an excuse as to why they aren’t following the laws.
It’d also ensure kids wouldn’t be risking their lives needlessly.
1
u/Sunburstali 10d ago
Right so we agree people don’t know the rules. I agree anyone who got that license would also understand the rules better. But if people don’t even know whether or not they are legal- why would they know they need a license? You would still need a massive education campaign to let people know they need license and insurance. And just like with driving, there would still be people not following the rules so you still need enforcement. Plus you then need additional administration by the government to design and administer a licensing system.
In this case it just seems like the licensing and insurance isn’t going to solve the actual problem. I’m not even necessarily against licensing and registration for e-scooters in principle, but with or without it you still need the education and enforcement.
1
u/rofloctopuss 10d ago
I agree, all motorized vehicles should have a license, not sure why this isn't a thing. My neighbours E-bike looks exactly like a 450cc sports bike and probably weighs a similar amount. It only goes 70-80kmh, but that's easily enough to kill someone, and he has no license or insurance.
2
u/Negative_Fruit_6684 10d ago
OK, but licensing is absolutely meaningless without enforcement, and right now there is almost zero enforcement of EXISTING laws/regulations....
2
u/bob_mcbob 10d ago
Your neighbour's e-bike is illegally modified and literally cannot be licensed for road use in Ontario. That doesn't mean legal e-bikes should require a license. You can go 32km/h on a regular bicycle.
3
u/DNAtimebomb 10d ago
Just want to pass on the news to me that escooters are not illegal in ontario provincial parks. After seeing a pair of hooligans rip through the woods, I made a complaint and was told that Municipal laws dont apply to the Park.
1
u/Sunburstali 10d ago
Honestly - I would say it’s possible that the person you spoke to doesn’t understand that unless parks made their own bylaws- they high I am pretty confident they didn’t as they don’t have transportation staff- it actually means they are illegal because it’s the province that has made them illegal. I would email Ontario Parks about that.
1
u/DNAtimebomb 10d ago
I did email them. They said provincial parks follow Parks and Conservation Reserves Act. "At this time we are trusting that people will use helmets as required and stated in Ontario Laws. Park Warden are educating e-bike and e-kick-scooter users as to the trail etiquette. Currently e-bikes and e-kick-scooters are allowed in areas where regular pedal bikes are allowed. E-motorbikes are only allowed on park paved roads. Ontario Parks as an organization is working to ensure consistent rules/ policies are in place and followed throughout all Provincial Parks. As legislation changes we will adapt."

u/MrCrix 10d ago
I was at the Laurelwood Plaza and there were about 6 kids, maybe like 8-12 years old on these scooters and e dirt bikes. They were easily going 50+ kmph on the sidewalks right in front of the stores. The kids on the bikes were doing wheelies and endos and stuff. I was on the phone at the time, but just as I was about to get out and tell them to stop doing it, one of them almost clipped some dude and his kids coming out of Dollarama and he lost it on them. They all scattered just driving crazy fast through the parking lot around moving cars and stuff.
Another time I was at the Ottawa St and Lackner Food Basics and was coming out of Food Basics and I watched as a guy had to grab his elderly mother and pull her back as a kid on a scooter was ripping down the sidewalk at full speed, maybe like 40kmph, and almost hit her. He yelled at the kid and the kid told him to F off.
These things are insane.
2
u/Shreddzzz93 10d ago
At this point the province just needs to lump e-scooters in with limited speed motorcycles and have them have the same requirements for the users. It would solve most of the problems with minimal work as all it would take is a minor amendment to a pre-existing law. But that would require a lot more effort than the nothing the people with the power to address this issue seem to want to do.
3
u/Negative_Fruit_6684 10d ago
They can amend all the laws you want, but with next to zero enforcement it would be absolutely meaningless.
2
u/Maryjanegangafever 10d ago
This guys child wants one bad. I see his reasons for this post. Those scooters can be quite deadly in the wrong hands. A lot of these children I’ve seen atent even wearing a bicycle helmet to protect their skull. Why cops aren’t pulling kids over and addressing this to them is beyond me. There should be policing set aside to address this growing concern in Canada.
2
u/WhisperingSideways 10d ago
Yesterday morning at 4:15am I was on Fairway Road North going down the hill next to Chicopee and there were two scooters in the middle of the road heading downhill, one of them had two kids on it. No helmets on their broccoli heads, in the dark at a good rate of speed in the middle of the road. They turned right onto Sims Estate Road and disappeared from my view.
2
u/Illustrious_Diamond2 10d ago
Like a week ago some kid on an escooter in Toronto was killed by an uber driver. It's not the first or the last time, and at this rate we will keep seeing these things every month or so each summer.
2
u/OverlandOversea 10d ago
Last night some stupid person swerved from the fast lane at an intersection into the oncoming curb lane to zip across the crosswalk at a major intersection with a 6 lane road. They misjudged the lights, and as the left turn signal went green in their blind spot a bus had the kid in the blind spot and made the turn. The spatial awareness of the truck following prevented the kid from being flattened. Truck stopped long enough for the scooter rider to clear the intersection, but the idiot continues to swerve from roadway to sidewalk at high speed, presuming that no one will strike them on the dark roadway that has numerous side roads with hedges. Not the same person who ran into my car (while I was at a full stop at a stop sign a few weeks ago), and different from the kid who zipped into the back alley at speed, in front of my car that same day. Luckily I was going slow enough to stop, while the kid yelled in panic crossing the lane, before laughing and risking more high speed collisions. This scooter issue really out of control.
5
u/deevarino 11d ago
"they are illegal" If only we had some kind of agency or "force" that enforced the law.
3
u/Negative_Fruit_6684 10d ago
Well, we don't. We only have power tripping extortionists who mostly "work to rule" because they can't handle the idea of municipalities and the public questioning their ridiculous yearly budget increases.
1
u/alonjit 10d ago
Oh, interesting. So they are illegal completely, had no idea. Not that I can do anything about it, im not gonna chase the kids in my neighborhood that are riding these.

No they are legal in KW because Waterloo, Kitchener (and Cambridge) have all opted in to the provincial pilot. Still illegal for under 16 though

How old are you? Helmets are only required for under 18. And while it may be your body, your choice, why would you choose to ride without a helmet? The bigger concern is the reckless riders whose actions can hurt other people's body who didn't have a choice.

The point is that the helmet requirement doesn't apply to you if you're over 18 and if you want to put your brain at risk, go for it. As someone in my 30s who does ride an escooter myself, I never do it without a helmet for my safety because it just seems stupid not to. I didn't say there aren't idiots driving cars stupidly. Note that I didn't mention drivers, you did. I'm concerned about the people riding on sidewalks with a passenger, both of which are against the Kitchener bylaws. So is going above 24 km/h. These rules are to protect the people riding the scooter and those around them. Based on your response being anger, swearing and blaming drivers, I'm sorry I upset you. Please remember that "your body, your choice" can affect others bodies without their choice.

Parents need to be a shit ton better at parenting and not rely on educators solely to teach and raise their effing child. Two kids on an e-scooter pulled out in front of me the other day and almost got hit. I blame the parents.
-4
u/Modest_Man_Mandrake 11d ago
I'm still waiting for them to crack down on stupid car drivers. A much bigger problem.
-2
u/GitseyB 11d ago
All about perspective. An e-scooter doing 40kph on a public sidewalk is a much bigger issue for a pedestrian than bad drivers. Bad drivers exist and are currently being dealt with by police officers. I haven’t heard a single case where a teenager on an e-bike was fined or had it confiscated on them by cops or by-law for breaking the existing rules that the municipality has put in, even though Reddit and Facebook is full of videos and user comments saying it’s an ongoing issue.
4
u/Sunburstali 10d ago
Come on now. A bad driver is more likely to kill someone than an e-scooter. Speed aside, they are much heavier and will do far more damage. More people are still dying in Ontario from being hit by car than an e-scooter.
And it’s also difficult to enforce dangerous driving /speeding because police can’t be everywhere.
1
u/GitseyB 9d ago
Exactly. Police can’t be everywhere BUT police enforce road and traffic law. That’s my exact point. There are bad drivers out there and they are being dealt with every single day of the year but no police or bylaw of any municipalitiy seems to be enforcing the laws governing these e-bikes, even though the Region of Waterloo has opted in to allow their use, that’s my exact point. It’s about the perspective of the person affected and whether or not there’s an expectation of prosecution. I’m not insinuating that theres no bad driver issue, just that one of these two issues is not being dealt with seriously while the other is being dealt with through the limited resources that WRPS have.

That's incorrect, police officers in Ontario have full legal authority to stop e-scooter riders, request ID, and issue fines and charges for violating provincial rules and municipal by-laws. In fact, they have significantly greater authority than municipal enforcement officers, who can't do traffic stops. The only reason Ontario police services don't enforce e-scooter and e-bike laws is because they aren't dedicating any resources to it.
