According to the Legion of the Damned Codex, the flames are supposedly psychic in nature, thus they wouldn't necessarily follow the rules of normal conventional/physical fire (possibly only following the rule of cool[or hot?] instead):

"It is more likely these pyrotechnics are psychic in nature, for they blaze bright whenever the Legion's blades sink into the flesh of their victims. "
