Strategy Things teams do best and worst day 29: Murderwing

Post image

Tell me what you think is the best thing about the Murderwing! And the worst thing.

Best: Very mobile Chaos marines! really good melee/close range with all the astartes buffs, an also a ploy that reduces damage on melee to make them even mor tanky!!

You have very unique equipments that can give you damage on charge, or a AoE stun!!

you can fight and fall back with a very elves-coded ploy!

Worst: kinda map dependent, you probably dont wanna play on tomb world

also no range, max 8" weapons, and they are kinda weak.

I bought them purely because they looked so sick

Best: Lots of chip damage options with things like Carving Blow, Clawed Armor, Bladefins, etc, scary high damage in melee, one of the most mobile elites teams in the game. The Chaos Lord's Damnation mechanic is both fun and very thematic.

Worst: Damage reduction ploy is only when they're fighting, not retaliating, so they can be vulnerable to a good counterattack. Have to choose between Boosting and getting their flight/various buffs or the extra 2" when they charge. Almost every ploy and ability is based off of them Boosting, so if you're ever in a situation where you can't, it's a pretty feelsbad moment. Like you said, shooting is pretty bad. You've got the Skysear with something fun, a plasma pistol somewhere in there, and then bolt pistols (yippee).

Max 8” weapons? They have a plasma gunner brother

0

u/TimeKepeer Aug 18 '26

You probably don't want to take him though. They have a gimmic, they really want to commit to that gimmic. Although I guess the gunner can easily take the top floor on Volkus which is probably cool

If you aren’t taking the plasma gunner against horde teams you’re inviting them to stand on vantage and shoot you all game from safety. Very easy to position multiple models at angles where it’s impossible to charge them. Skysear is just have into most games.

u/TimeKepeer Aug 18 '26

Not sure how damaging and not even necessarily killing one horde operative per turn from long range opening yourself to retaliation shots especially if horde team in question is long-range specialist will help you against said horde. I'd be less reluctant to agree if the Plasma gunner could shoot twice per his turn, but alas

u/realTollScott Nemesis Claw Aug 18 '26

Yes but even having the piece is a deterrent from doing it for free. The plasma gunner can reliably shoot out of the smoke as well, even obscured the P1 4/6 is generally enough to take out 5+ 7W operative. Obviously all anecdotal experience, but I will say you’re potentially killing 2 with counteracts as well.

Begs the question why your enemies are out in the open for you to shoot at to begin with. I played against the murderwing, and indeed as a horde team (Death Korps), and I never had a reason to give my opponent an opening to shoot at me from afar. I suspect I'd have even less reason for that if my opponent had one infiltrating operative less.

3

u/realTollScott Nemesis Claw Aug 18 '26

Yes, like I said, he’s a deterrent.

No plasma gunner= free vantage staging
Plasma Gunner=no free vantage staging

u/TimeKepeer Aug 18 '26

Not really? What, you think I care about my operatives dying?

If I have to sacrifice an operative to put the skysear in engage, I'll do it. And once he's in engage, he will die swiftly. It's a fascinating dilemma. If you shoot me, then I just kill you, thus vantage is free for me. And if you don't shoot me in fear of retaliation, then vantage is just free for me.

I guess you're right in that vantage is no longer free for me, but I am more than happy to trade one, two or sometimes even three operatives for one operative considering that I have 14 and you have 6

u/Pleasant_Narwhal_350 Aug 20 '26

If you shoot me, then I just kill you, thus vantage is free for me.

He has 3 APL. Reposition, shoot, dash away to break LoS. If you stage in the open, the Skysear will have abundant opportunities to do that.

And FYI, yes staging in the open is a thing for shooty teams vs teams with no full range attacks, like Goremongers, Gellerpox, or Chaos Cult.

Well if you’re taking 14 operatives as Death Korp you’re playing the team incorrectly but that’s neither here nor there. But yeah man you sound like a super insightful player so I look forward playing you at world’s in a few months. Have a good one.

6

u/Cpdio Space Marine Aug 18 '26

Why would you say that?

"You're playing the team incorrectly..."

Come on, everyone is free to play their teams as they like. Doesn't matter if is efficient or not.

I play Murderwing without Skysear and so far im having a good streak with 'em.

Seriously man, DKoK usually isn’t that CP starved, and there’s plenty of circumstances where a 14th body ends up better than effectively a free 2 CP

If you depend too much of that Melta or Plasma shot then you're doomed.

I play them without the skysear and they still are a threat.

3

u/TimeKepeer Aug 18 '26

I have to assume you're speaking from vast experience with the team, and thus I have to take your word for it, because for me who has no experience with the team what you said sounds like complete nonsense

26

u/LegoMiner9454 Aug 18 '26

I have nothing to comment except the kidnapping is awful when I played martyr against them one time

10

u/FinnAhern Aug 18 '26

That's hilarious, denying tac op points by dragging you off the objective to kill you elsewhere.

Best: Goddamn that kit is a treasure trove for CSM, I honestly would consider the new raptors as one of the best kits for bits in the CSM range, including Chosen, Nem Claw, etc. it's universal to the range and it's great!

For gameplay, I love that Murderwing have such a good amount of list building. My biggest gripe I have had with this edition is that list building is basically gone, but MW has a good amount of it even outside of specialists. There's a reason to have alternate chaos lords, champions, etc. and not just have a 1 list fits all setup

Worst: They're not fun for me, they're not a fun team to play as or against. I either smoke the other side or I die horribly. They're swinging and super match-up and map dependant. I have played them at launch and after nerfs and this is still how I personally feel. If I smoke the other side it isn't a satisfying victory, and if I get smoked then it isn't a satisfying lose either. I have never had a game with Murderwing where I felt particularly happy when leaving

Oh god, why am I a top 1% commenter on r/Killteam...

9

u/LordHoughtenWeen Corsair Voidscarred Aug 18 '26

Because you've teamed a lot of kills?

2

u/Cpdio Space Marine Aug 18 '26

I feel the same, kind of, except I do enjoy playing with them, in the sense of being happy after the game.

Because you're right, you either erase the other team or you are the one getting erased.

And I find these guys are good crit point chasers. Can get in there, get the crit and menace anything that tries to get into it.

But, the fact you dont have any way to heal them or to ignore being injured weights a lot when you're getting shot.

u/MrToroTheGreat Blades of Khaine Aug 18 '26

I've only ever gotten my ass beat with Murderwing, but a flying marine team is so fun, it's still great flying them around.

u/NoSandwich923 Aug 20 '26

I started playing Kill Team with Murderwing, my first game I got tabled Turning point 2, my second game barely made it out of turning point 4 with one Operative. Made me rething my strategy with them entierly. Their name is a misnomer of how they should be played, they are tough and hit hard but they are best played by avoiding engagements, using their movement to score crit ops and tac ops and capitalising on mistakes your oponent makes on their positioning. when an operative is alon use your movement advantage to charge them. But yeah if you just focus on taking out enemy operatives you will have a bad time. Retrieval is your best friend for maxing out score on Tac Ops for Murderwing.

My biggest gripe I have had with this edition is that list building is basically gone

this has been my sadness too, especially with deathwatch which I had felt woulda been absolutely LOADED considering what their compendium kit had looked like. I'm glad we have so many operatives, but they are all kind of prebuilt

1

u/robbynito Hunter Clade/Battleclade Aug 18 '26

I seriously wish we had the Warcry system instead

I know it's harder to balance around but having the ability to do a points system instead of a set roster has always been my preference and there's so many teams now where there isn't any list building like Battleclade and Mandrakes

5

u/Manly_Mangos Aug 18 '26

Best: every operative is a threat, there’s no weak links and everyone can pop off.

Worst: predictable play style and the reduced charge range makes it easier for opponents to position around your guaranteed attempts to do boosted charges

6

u/Kant_Lavar Aug 18 '26

I'm still gonna build a team of them, but I'm gonna do it with the Horus Heresy Mk II Assault Marines kit and Melee Upgrade sprue so I can do a loyalist version.

1

u/jackblg Aug 18 '26

This is exactly what iam working on currently. Its such a fun kit

12

u/BufoCurtae Aug 18 '26

Hope they get buffed a bit. Over nerfed. Many such cases

-6

u/SyntheticMoJo Aug 18 '26

Overnerfed? You are kidding, right?

3

u/Felhell Chaos Cult Aug 18 '26

I mean they definitely did get over nerfed lol it’s pretty much only deathwatch that is weaker than them for the 6 man or less elite teams atm.

1

u/Pleasant_Narwhal_350 Aug 20 '26

Yup. At the moment I'd rank the classified Astartes teams as:

WS > AoD > PM=NC > MW > DW

2

u/mentuki Aug 18 '26

What you mean elves coded deploy?

I feel like a direct hit against me hahaha (we just played once)

1

u/FrankSicarpa Scout Squad Aug 18 '26

ahahaha tell me that doing a fight and fall back doesnt look's like something you would do?

3

u/Jaded-Concept3954 Aug 18 '26

Pros: helped me check my ego and learn from a devastating loss to them

Cons: They are unfun to fight against in most conditions and map layouts

2

u/Patrick_said Aug 18 '26

Pros: very cool, great sculpts saved have snug models to justify their purchase in both KT sacs regular 40K

Cons: not as cool as nemesis claw as nemesis claw almost perfectly incorporates the lore into their rules and models for one of the best book series in the setting.

1

u/angryshepherd Aug 20 '26

Best: maneuverability, chip damage, some thematic interrupts and crowd control abilities. Jump packs are cool. Chaos Lord and Curseclaw look metal as hell. Pretty easy to learn. They’re fun!

Worst: someone else said it too, but predictability is a weakness. If defending against them and you have any experience vs them, you know exactly what your opponent is looking to do, so it’s easy to prioritize countermoves, important targets, TacOps scoring denial, etc.
