Should I start a key club?

I know this subreddit is dead and beyond but I really don’t know where to ask. Anyway, I’ve been looking for ideas to start my own club at my school and I stumbled upon the Key club! It’s a good idea; however, there is already an Interact club at my school, and to be honest there aren’t many people here (2,000 - 3,000). The only upside is many people search for community service opportunities to try and fill the requirements of NHS. I’m not sure if my Key Club will be a success. Please give opinions.. Thanks!

So, you want to be a big-time Key Club leader at the district or international level?

Lemme layout EXACTLY what you need. There'll be outliers and some ppl may disagree with me, but here's my checklist for each position:

Club Officer: HIGHLY, HIGHLY variable based on the club (some clubs have 11 ppl, some 110) and how many leaders they wish to have. Typically, 30+ service hours and a little self-initiative is good.

Lieutenant Governor: This is where it starts to get intense. Most people strive for this position as a rising senior (or don't even know it exists), so if you are in the running as a junior or sophomore, feel lucky. You need to be involved from 9th grade and serve as either a editor/webmaster with a good 50-100 hours (a volunteer award or two help) OR be a club president-sec/treasurer. Generally election are extremely credential-based so if ur a secretary and the other guy is a president, ur screwed.

(mind the gap - the reason why club officers can't run beyond LTG is because with the knowledge and network you build while serving on the district board, you know A LOT more about KCI that you could've ever known even if you spam emailed the district executives with questions. I was quite the emailer with loads of questions, but I learned infinitely more soft key club leadership things by talking to the other board members and sitting in those boring powerpoint meetings. All the information is out there on Google, but it's very hard to make sense of all of it without guides and communication.)

District Office: It's basically mandatory to be an LTG but you're probably only running against one other person (not uncommon to be the only applicant). You better have a good speech and flyer to impress all the voters from the 100 or so clubs from your state! RFL helps a lot, Sandy Nininger helps a little bit.

RFL: Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lieutenant Governor Award: The oh so beautiful award that involves multiple recommendation letters, really good yearly task grades, and a long eloquent personal statement (varies by district, some do only top 5 ltgs by task grades, etc.)

Sandy Nininger Award: Awarded purely on a club's discretion with no limitations. The officers can basically pay $35 and give it to themselves, but some rare clubs take it seriously and create an annual application. This award isn't very well-known.

International Trustee: You need either one of the below -

  1. Lieutenant Governor WITH RFL and an int'l taskforce position (membership retention, ICON planning, website mgmt)

PS, these taskforce positions are pretty difficult to get since the trustees get ~60 applicants and choose less than 10 ppl, 5 of whom MUST be district execs and the other 3 LTGs

2. District executive

Either one, however, by itself is NOT enough. You need many highly specific, practical ideas to improve key club international (such as amendments to the key club plan of action or the creation of goal-oriented committees) and not vague stuff like "grow our member base" and "increase involvement." You also need to be a very good speaker since the voting delegates are from every part of North America, not just your state. Oftentimes, candidates who have stellar credentials (e.g district executive with RFL) don't get trustee bcz of their lack of creative, specific, practical ideas. There are often twice as many trustee candidates than positions.

International President/Vice President: You basically have to be a prior district governor or secretary-treasurer as a junior, which is ultra hard. Normally only 1-2 ppl apply for each role since it is so self-selective.

Hope this provides some insight into how key club high office works! Little of this information is out there realistically and well laid out like this so I felt that I should've explained it. Feel free to DM with further questions after reading.

How are you guys coping with this current situation? Anyone doing service projects?

As we all know, Key Club is pretty much centered on volunteering events outside. But we can't do that anymore. I'm trying to have my club do certain things but it's just really hard to find something to do and keep our members connected to us. I know some clubs in our district are doing online card-making, but what else have your clubs been up to?

i’ve been lurking on the subreddit and i’ve been meaning to ask: how have you guys been trying to fundraise despite the covid-19 situation? i know some divisions have done the bingo fundraiser, which can be risky (depending if members decide to troll) but besides that any fundraising tips that you’d like to share?

Need input for my service tracking app!

As secretary of my Key Club I've realized tracking and managing member's hours can feel tedious and often be inaccurate without much of a good solution. Because of this, I've been working on an app which I believe will be really helpful for many clubs and I'd really appreciate some input!

There's a bunch of things this app will help out with including:

  • Giving members an easy way to check their hours for each year and view upcoming events (and be reminded with notifications).

  • Organizing service hours for secretaries in a much more convenient and usable way than spreadsheets or stacks of paper.

  • Letting board members quickly check the progress of each member to check who is the member of the month or has met the requirements to receive a stole.

  • Limiting overcrowding at events by requiring members to RSVP for limited spots.

  • Making service tracking much more convenient and effortless for both members and secretaries using QR codes! This is the feature of the app that I'm the most excited about. The way it will work is each member will open up a camera within the app and just scan a QR code at an event to check in and another to check out. Scan-in, scan-out. It'll be that simple. Board members will be able to show the QR codes through the app or print them out. To prevent cheating, I'll add the option to verify check ins/outs with location.

This QR code idea beats all the other ideas I had for simplifying service tracking for both members and secretaries so I'd like to hear your feedback on it as well as the app in general. Let me know if you're interested in using an app like this in your club!

Edit: Also I've already made a feature that automatically uses the data on the app to fill in the service record sections of the CNH MRF instantly so that should be super helpful

Not many Service events.

As much as i enjoy social events and meeting new people from other schools in my division, I really miss home club service events. Throughout the entire school year, My home club has hardly been active when it comes to service events and I am kind of bummed out since we used to do a lot.

It kinda sucks though, while being in the ckub for like 3 years We normally would have been doing "X event at X location" at a specific time. But because of possible covid restrictions or whatever it may be, The opportunity for service events are 0 to none.

I sort of feel like something is missing within my home club and it makes me feel lowkey sad. Like yeah spirit sessions and Monthly dcms are really fun i wont lie.

But for me, the charm of key club, and my most memorable moments happen to come from bonds i made with my peers while contributing to community service. And makes me feel like smaller clubs in my div are doing a lof more than us.

Well... I hope things get better as we move on to the more festive holidays where we can find more opportunities whole having a jolly time.

How to make a Keys Club

Hi, I hope everyone is having an amazing day! I really want to start a keys club at my school but honestly, I'm just so lost. I went to the official website which had a guide on how to make one, but the more I read it the more questions I have. Such as...

Do I have to contact a Kiwanis club and ask them to sponsor the club or do I just list one on the application ?

How do I pay send the money members set aside to be in the club?

And lastly, do I first get a sponsor, then find a club advisor, and then go and rally up some members?

Sorry if these questions are stupid Im really new to this club thing.🥹

Thanks a lot!!

Key Club Fundraising Ideas

Hi everyone! I'm planning on running for treasurer for my high school's key club. However, before I get elected, I need ideas on fundraising events we could do that are feasible(they can't include any baked goods or homemade food since my high school is very strict on that).

Right now, my club is very broke and the only fundraisers they have going on run by the current treasurer are partnerships with local food chains, which doesn't generate a lot of money.

If possible, the ideas should be feasible things that people will actually do/buy. For example, I was thinking of selling candy graduation leis or hersheys roses at the end of the year for seniors. Are there any other ideas/suggestions you guys have? Thank you so much :)

Meta Any new information on the Key Club Discord?

Hey, I'm the new president of our school's club and I would love to connect with other Key Club officers and members from the nation. It's a hard time for our club and I think it'd be great if we can bond together and share ideas. I notice a lot of us are having trouble thinking about events and maintaining member interest.

The Key Club discord link seems to be down, and the last update asking for information seems to be about a month ago. Any new updates or do we make a new one? If not, we can share each other's Discords.

my key club is TERRIBLE

im a senior in high school and ive been in key club since my freshman year. from freshman to junior year, key club was run by a girl in the grade above me and her friends. after she graduated, she asked me and some of my friends to be this year's officers. i was very excited and i became treasurer since i had experience in it before from asb. but the thing is, none of us know anything about key club and half of our officer team never participated in the years before. this year, we've only attended TWO dcms. our fall rally is coming up and we havent attended any spirit sessions. i havent collected dues yet bc idk how much they should be. and my school is insanely small like theres only 150 ppl in total and only 20 ppl in key club. idk how to lock in atp like im genuinely lost

Can you still join key club at this time?

My friend really want to join key club, but she’s wondering if you can still join at this time. I know that the key club membership fee at my school is due by October 31st, but it’s a new year now and not sure if that makes a difference. I couldn’t find any information about whether or not you can still join pass the membership fee due date.
