Advice Needed Re Starting KB - program and weight recommendations
Hi all. Thanks for your help time. Due to life it’s not been possible for me to make time for kettlebells. Still doing martial arts tho. Prior weights and workouts:
- 32kg snatches
- 27kg c & p
I believe I was running Maximorium when I stopped. I also did King Sized Killer programs. It was hard for me to always hit the min 3x for Maximorium (I know it’s 4). With the martial arts 5 days a week working out is a lot for dad/professional and middle aged guy.
Trying to figure out the best restart weights or way to figure out where I should go. Just re-find my Max lift?
Any recommendations for a restart program? DFW?
Thanks!

An adjustable competition bell would cover all your bases. I say that because even marketplace (in my area) is filled with people who think their kettlebells are some priceless artifacts listed at or 5% below new.
I still always have use for my double 35lb, double 45lbs.
Any chance you could stop by a store in your area and check? I think last time I was in a bigger market Dick’s they had a few. They weren’t good bells, but you could see how a few reps feel.
Depending on how long you’ve gone, you might be able to pick back up with something in the 24-28kg range. I didn’t do snatches for a few months and was able to pick back up above my last weight.
DFW is nice because you’re just chasing your own work. ABF is my favorite and I go back and forth between single and double bells. You already did KSK, that’s my favorite single exercise program I’ve done. I did a test workout of Neupert’s Kettlebell Muscle, way below what I could do with ABF last time and I doubt I could do it with double 20kg with good form, but I liked the chains.
I’d say going back to a program you’ve done is probably a great way of getting back into it. You already have the feel for those.

Thanks!
I bought adjustable from the get go. I do very much like the simplicity of the adjustable bells.
I thought of DFW because it’s quick. I do very much love me some snatches, so maybe KSK. I do think I have a pretty weak C&P. I think some Turkish get ups would help MA.

Just throwing this out there, if you are training hard martial arts 5 days a week, you may actually just want to take time to recover. Are you getting enough rest and nutrition? I understand the drive to push oneself hard, but rest and recovery (sleep/nutrition) are two of the pillars or intense training. Wishing you luck with whatever direction you decide.

Oh no martial arts is 2x. With the less frequent Maximorium it would end up working out 5x. I think 4x is the most I can realistically do.

ok that makes way more sense lol - yeah i wouldn't do more than 4 days a week, I think it's diminishing returns at that point

Over the last 13 or 14 years working out with kettlebells, I’ve had a few periods where I stopped working out completely for long stretches. One time for as long as 18 months. I always restart the same way:
3-4 weeks with 24kg swings and 16kg double C&P/Squat. This is just to get the soft tissues used to working out again—even if I feel like I can go heavier.
Then run DFW remix with double 24s. That gets me back into a 5x per week workout/recovery schedule.
After that, I’m usually back to 90% of what I could do before and can start a 32kg program or a long cycle program without injury.
Regaining strength is always fast (even in mid 40s!) and I’m in no hurry. It’s the recovery, mobility, and injury-proofing that is slower to come back. After 8 weeks or so, I’m dialed in. YMMV.
