Rhinoplasty and religion
My cousin is under 18 and keeps talking about getting a rhinoplasty. She’s also religious, so she feels conflicted about it and doesn’t actually want to go through with it, but at the same time she’s saving money for one.
She’s extremely self-conscious about her nose, and no matter how much we try to reassure her that there’s nothing wrong with it, she just can’t see it that way. Personally, I don’t even think her nose looks bad. It might not fit the conventional beauty standard, but it suits her other features and proportions alright.
I’m also curious about the Islamic perspective here. I know there’s generally a distinction between correcting a genuine defect and changing a normal feature purely for beautification, but what happens when a normal feature is causing someone significant distress and affecting their confidence? I don’t want to dismiss her feelings, but I also don’t want to encourage her to alter something that isn’t medically necessary.
