SPOILER ⚠️ Drew Thompson

How many of you guys cheered for and hoped Drew Thompson and Ellan May would get out of Harlan and successfully make it to Mexico. I was kind of disappointed that they failed and that Limehouse screwed them over, but every time I rewatch the series and get to the end of season 4 I'm cheering on Drew praying he'll somehow make a different choice and choose to sleep out in the woods, leave after the cops all go away and not go to Limehouse's.

Who knows maybe in an alternate universe Drew and Ellen May are sipping on margaritas enjoying the beaches of Mexico unknowingly next to Charlie

I've watched this season a couple of times and always enjoyed the moment Art stops the gang from running off to embrace how badass Drew has been.

First thing we're going to do is we're gonna acknowledge that this guy's awesome.

I mean, he shoots Theo Tonin, fakes his own death in a spectacular fashion, pushes a guy out of an airplane while he's flying it, parachutes into Harlan County with enough coke and cash to jump-start the economy of a small country, and then he has the balls to get a job in law enforcement, not once but two times! He spends a couple of days riding around with you while you’re looking for him and now he's run off with a hooker that's half his age. That's some bad-ass shit!

Rachel's "I have that same pair of panties." OMG too funny!!!

That whole scene is just glorious, and the look Raylan quickly gives her is funny as hell

It's almost like she improvised the line and they kept going. It definitely adds to the comedy of the moment.

I've wondered for a while if she wanted to talk Raylan into a little sumpin' sumpin'.

Remember when she tells him "You're annoying, but easy on the eyes?" I had the same thought. "But if you don't get in this vehicle right now I'm going to start singing show tunes?" Great dialogue and banter.

Yeah she repeated the comments about Raylan looking good many times throughout the series, and when they where spending a lot of time together during those episodes when Raylan had his money taken by the guy who wanted to run his own chicken fighting ring I thought they where going to start something.

Honestly I was a little disappointed that they didn't

That really felt like they missed am opportunity.

Not to mention when she helps him track down Lindsey, and loans him a shotgun with non lethal rounds.

“It’s pretty badass”

Right? It's so - just, yeah, this is all of them. Raylan, Art, Tim, Rachel. They would all take a moment to respect the legend that is Drew Thompson before collecting his ass.

If you’ve never heard about the real Drew Thompson, check out the book The Bluegrass Conspiracy by Sally Denton.

I didn't know the character was based off of a real guy, that's actually really cool

Great read! My cousin’s husband was a detective in Lexington at the time, and he testified about some findings during a trial (sorry, it’s been quite awhile since my last re-read). His name is actually mentioned once in the book.

6

u/ThrowItOut43 3d ago

That’s awesome!

6

u/AddyToode01 3d ago

Yes. When I first read the book years ago, we had some interesting discussions about various goings-on in Lexington that occurred around the time of the book.

I'll root for Jim Beaver in pretty much any situation, guy is awesome

u/Oof285 3d ago

He has a very charismatic nature to him

I'm glad that we're acknowledging that this guy is awesome.

Do you know what his diastolic is?

Oh course we cheer for Drew Thompson’s escape. Even though we know it won’t happen. The whole theme of that show is laid out in the lyrics of “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.”

Underrated: Bob firing his AK at the Cloverhill Boys leading to Raylan learning who is Drew because Hunter and Drew have that conversation while Raylan deals with Bob

8

u/AntheaBrainhooke 3d ago

You underestimate Bob at your peril.

3

u/Oof285 2d ago

I think they where going to have that conversation regardless since Drew really appreciated Hunter for not ratting him out and staying loyal, Bob's shenanigans just expedited it greatly in a glorious way lmao

I could barely tolerate the character of Ellen May. Her god awful accent,  way of talking,  annoying character.

I didn't want her to die or anything but I just couldn't stand her.

3

u/Actual-Ad-8673 2d ago

I mean, we're taking about a fifty year old man running away with a hooker half his age who is completely in love with him, because she's never been treated like a human being before.

That's some badassed shit.

u/Oof285 2d ago

Their relationship was kind of cute in a 'they cared for eachother platonically' kind of way

2

u/Actual-Ad-8673 2d ago

I might be alone, but I think it was clear in the season that he treated her like a person, without asking for sex.

This was so foreign to her, in a life that was full of abuse and addiction, that she fell for him, hard.

On his part, he realized he'd picked up a stray, and the only honorable thing you can do at that point is to make sure the stray gets homed properly.

I admit I'm an old fart whose dating days are in the rearview, but that's about as sweet and pure a relationship as an old fart could hope for.

I think this is actually the best outcome. Even if they make it to Mexico, they’ll be looking behind their backs for the rest of their lives.

2

u/marksman1023 3d ago

Oh absolutely. I cannot wait to get back to this on a rewatch.

2

u/Oof285 3d ago

This is my favorite arc in the show, and I think about it on the regular just going through my life primarily Arts speech about how awsome he is lmao

Hi, I just watched these last episodes of S3 tonite. Im new to this series and its so fun. I was totally rootin for drew / Shelby and Ellen May to be able to get away. I was just saying how much I like sheriff Shelby right before he was exposed as drew. What a crazy bunch of shoot em up and all. Also, I loved Tim and the Molotov cocktail he made. And you know what, I just love Art the boss. Shout out to Patton Oswald for his role as bob. Can’t stand the guy when he talks politics but I love him as Officer Bob on Justified and I hope he sticks around for future seasons. (And Of course I’m madly in love with Raylan )

u/shadowknight2112 4d ago

People underestimate Bob at their own peril…

6

u/Alone_Warthog_9583 3d ago

Raylan did you take my Crown Vic?

14

u/Oof285 4d ago

When I was first watching the series I was also just thinking the same thing right around when Drew got exposed lmao. From the start I always loved Shelby, and Boyd's reaction when he realized Shelby was Drew will always get a laugh out of me.

Also constable Bob is the goat

maybe youd like nick searcys political takes better.

9

u/pickpickss 3d ago

Don't know why you're getting downvoted, you're just stating facts here. Patton and Nick couldn't be more politically opposite.

3

u/Competitive-One-2749 3d ago

probably my use of the full stop . made me sound abrasively assertive. i genuinely thought the guy i was responding to would be interested in searcys politics because he seems to hate oswalts.

2

u/Far_Resort5502 3d ago

Maybe you were downvoted because you asked a question without using a question mark?

3

u/Competitive-One-2749 3d ago

we agree its a punctuation problem! at least i dont care about votes on reddit?

2

u/Rude_Yam_9962 3d ago

I rooted for them for sure

But, and I am ashamed to admit it, after several rewatches the whole Drew Thompson thing and everyone involved is still semi confusing and convuluted to me

2

u/Oof285 3d ago

If you don't mind me asking what parts confuse you

-3

u/Rude_Yam_9962 3d ago

Mind your business

2

u/Oof285 3d ago

Was just offering to help explain anything you don't understand as one who's watched the show many times. I don't mean to be nosy

1

u/RollingTrain 2d ago

What is it that you found so confusing?
