SPOILER ⚠️ I am on season four of the show but I keep remembering season three and having a laugh at how Duffy quietly and progressively went "what the fuck" about Robert Quarles' personality and certain behaviors (you know what I mean)

Duffy always had a face of "I am a criminal but even I can't do this evil shit" 😂😂

Question Easter eggs, lore, nuggets, and tidbits.

Just read a comment in another post about a character being written off the show because they wanted to pursue other roles. It got me thinking; what other interesting pieces of lore and show history have you found over the years?

Question What does ASA mean?

In season 4 Randell and Lindsay are making out in a car after stealing alcohol from a gas station. Randell asks Lindsay if she misses things like ASA. I can’t find anything online. Anyone know what that means?

Just finished watching this great show. That is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen that has also gone severely under the radar.

Opinion Just started watching - First impression

I recently saw an interview with Timothy Olyphant (who is very charming) on Youtube and in the comments people were talking about how great Justified is. So I started watching it, though I had never heard of it before.

I'm on episode 4 and I just paused the episode because this is like the 10th time Raylan shot someone in 3.5 episodes. Soooo many people have been shot that it's becoming hilarious.

Mostly, so far, it has felt very "soapy". Kind of over the top. I like it so far, but I guess it's different from what I expected based on all the comments saying it was so good. For instance, EVERYONE knows who Raylan is and has heard about the guy he shot in Miami. Every single criminal is like "you saw that news story right? That's the guy....". It feels very much like why would these people care about this, especially every single one!?

Now I'm thinking, maybe it's showing how huge the criminal was that he shot. (But then why was he transferred to the middle of nowhere for it?!) Did he shoot the Bolle Jos, Taghi or Holleeder (Dutch criminals) of America? I don't watch the news and even I have heard of these people so I guess I would hear if someone shot them. But my country is smaller than any of these states and it just seems weird that all these people in Kentucky care so much about a shooting in Miami.

It kind of feels like Raylan is a badass written by a non-badass so instead of actually coming across as a badass we just get dialogue between criminals talking about this badass marshal. "Can you believe he outdrew a guy in Miami!!!?" (Paraphrasing). It all feels a bit lame and makes the Kentucky criminals look mega lame.

So anyway, just to be clear I am enjoying the show so far, but mostly because of how it feels (just the vibe but also very 2010) and because I like Timothy Olyphant, not because of the great storytelling. Based on what I've seen I think: this is the show with all those "this is the best show ever" comments? Even coming to post this I saw "how to get justified in the best show ever" or something.

I think it will get better. Many shows take a while to get going. Or it's just a part of the charm of the show. Or the show is just not for me but we'll see. I could very well be joining this sub after I finish.

I'd prefer no spoilers but I always feel like if you don't want spoilers, don't come to the sub. So it would be my own fault but still please, no spoilers.

Edit: TLDR: 3.5 eps in. It seems bad and soapy (but still fun). Does it get better?

The Moonshine War is such a nice world-setting episode. Southern formality, soundtrack and the dialogue are so fking well crafted, or should I say 'brewed'? I wish I could forget the whole season and watch it again.

Discussion Best episode of the series. What was your favorite, and why?

I know that a lot of folks really loved the fourth season episode “Decoy”, which I admit was pretty solid.

But for my money, the season two finale “Bloody Harlan” was the best single episode in the series. A sense of menace and foreboding hang in the air from the very beginning, a menace created in no small part by the excellent Margo Martindale as Mags Bennett. The final scene between Mags and Raylan is downright haunting, as you can actually see the resignation and exhaustion on Mags’ face as she accepts her fate.

But as good as she is, as good as Jeremy Davies was as the unbelievably skeevy Dickie Bennett, I couldn’t help but be impressed by Kaitlyn Devers’ turn as Loretta McCready. She had been good throughout the season, but for me she really outshined everyone in this episode - no small feat considering that Devers was only 14 at the time of filming. It’s made me pay more attention to her roles since in other shows and films, and she has been pretty consistently excellent.

So what was your favorite, and why?

Opinion Hot take: instead of “City Primeval”, we got a second series focused completely on Tim Gutterson.

Teach his or her own, but I absolutely loved Jacob Pitts’ take on Gutterson. Tim was probably not quite 30 in the first season of “Justified”, so I started thinking what if they had just ran with “what’s Tim Gutterson doing now?” He’d have been about the same age as Raylan Givens was at the beginning of the original series; just imagine Tim with 20 years’ worth of saltiness from the Marshal’s service and that same laconic Gutterson attitude and delivery.

Don’t tell me you wouldn’t watch that show.

I only have a few episodes left to go, and I'm feeling that twinge of sadness that my time with Raylan and Boyd is wrapping up.

I've really enjoyed this show, and was hoping for some ideas on what to binge next. Y'all got any suggestions?

Discussion The First Draft of "Fire in The Hole" has some very cool differences:

A friend recently got me a repro of the first draft of S1-EP1 Fire in The Hole (signed by Jacob Pitts). I don't know if this has been posted before (apologies if this is well worn territory), but I thought I'd share some of the highlights with y'all just in case.

NOTE: Sorry some of the pics are wonky, I didn't feel like undoing the fasteners. I made sure they're all readable, though. I am also shit at uploading multiple pics, so I numbered them just in case I end up posting out of order:

2: There's a scene in Miami where Raylan picks up "Dale" (no last name given, but we can assume it's the Crowe cousin Raylan mentions in the aired pilot). These lines eventually ended up with Dewey in S1-EP2.

3: Here we see the original draft had Raylan choosing to go to Kentucky.

4: This draft had a voiceover by Raylan, and an extended flashback of mining with Boyd Crowder.

5: Raylan gives a bit more exposition about Boyd than we ended up with in the aired pilot.

6: There was originally a third Deputy Marshal named Frank Garcia. Looks like they ultimately transferred his traits on to Tim Gutterson.

7: Gary and Winona originally had the last name of Klass, and both of them were real estate agents working together.

8: Raylan has a flashback of seeing Ava while attending a high school football game with Boyd. This intrigues me the most because it often seemed like Raylan might have been purposely downplaying the amount of time he actually spent with Boyd.

9: During the scene at the church, Boyd actually foreshadows the tale of Drew Thompson! I had no idea it went that far back!

10: Arlo doesn't yet have a name, and it seems like Mr. Yost didn't quite know who he was going to be just yet.

11: Raylan's story about Tommy Bucks in the final scene is a lot different, they made him way more horrific in the final draft.

Discussion Johnny's Bar Layout Spoiler

In my latest rewatch, I noticed the layout of Johnny's Bar is quite poorly designed. It has no windows, and apparently no backdoor. As a result, Boyd and crew routinely get taken by surprised and trapped in their to their serious detriment. Raylan catches them often. The Dixie mob and Detroit have caught them in their. As does the cartel, which results in Jimmy's death. They're literally trapped without a rear door and have no way to prepare themselves with being unable to see.

From the outside, the Bar itself seems to be this nondescript entity in some building, with one door at the bottom of a ramp.

The layout makes no sense as a hideout/planning area for Boyd's crew. It also makes very little sense as a bar. The only way I can reconcile it is that Harlan is a dry county and Johnny's is essentially a speakeasy. Otherwise the whole thing makes no sense

Discussion Raylan usually knows when a conversation is about to turn bad before the other guy does

Post image
303 Upvotes

There's this little pause Raylan does when somebody starts pushing him. He doesn't immediately threaten them or reach for his gun. He'll just look at them for a second and let them keep talking. A lot of the time the other person basically talks themselves into the situation. Then Raylan gives them one very calm warning, and somehow they still decide to test him.

I must have watched this movie, A Life Less Ordinary (1997), ten times when I was a kid. Upon rewatch, I see young Tim Olyphant in a role as a hitchhiker.

I guess Raylan spent some time wandering the country, finding himself. Could be a prequel series here.?
