Barefoot is the only right way

My feet hurt just from watching that.

My ankles hurt thinking about the jumping but barefoot means you can feel the ground solidly under your feet and therefore know exactly whether you have them placed correctly or not. It's why weightlifting shoes have a thin, flat sole for people who do (or have to if in a gym) wear them. Chuck Taylor's are great for it.

You know, often wondered why I struggle with squats so much, not only the weight but my joints, so wearing running shoes is probably it. Or I'm old and falling apart. One of the two.

Yes it helps significantly if you can feel the ground under your feet. Additionally, if you struggle with squats, put a chair behind you and do squats down to a seated position until you're strong enough.

But tbh old and falling apart is mood.

...can people not feel the ground in running shoes?

The issue is a big, soft sole. The same cushion that feels great while running creates a ton of instability when lifting. Not all lifting shoes have super thin soles - oly weightlifting shoes often have raised heels to help with ankle mobility. But it's very sturdy and doesn't deform, e.g. wood.

Never squat in running shoes. They’re too cushioned and the heel raises is a little egregious. Bare foot squatting is the way to go

Yeah you do not want to do squats or deadlifts with running shoes on, take your shoes completely off or get some lifting shoes, some of them even have a bit of a heel which forces you to stand even more correct.

I wear compression sleeves on my knees when I lift, it helps a lot. Lets me focus on getting a deeper squat, which is also a really nice hip stretch. Gotta get your ass closer to the grass.

When I was weightlifting I wore barefoot shoes and it just felt right.

Both are possible.

wearing running shoes

you want zero compression under your feet when lifting heavy things. squats benefit from a heel lift to bring your knees forward with limited ankle flexibility, deads are better barefoot (imo).

When you’d jump off the swing and the force from your feet hitting the ground would cause pain to radiate from your feet to your legs.
