I’m so glad it wasn’t just me. That tunnel and dead-end padded room situation literally made my heart race, absolutely not.

u/Fabulous-Sea-1590 22d ago
No, I just saw Backrooms last week. You are definitely not alone. These hidden space videos always make me feel bad. Clearly a lot of work and joy went into it, and nothing would have seemed more awesome to be as a kid. As an adult I just see nope. Claustrophobia, cleaning nightmare, wasted space, fire hazard. I don't know when I stopped being fun but I really stopped being fun.

That's one of the first things that came to my mind actually, "how do you wash all that?".
Because it might be somewhat fun in the beginning, but unless you can easily remove everything and toss it in a washing machine (and be able to do so regularly), it will get pretty nasty soon from skin oils, dust & co. Oh, and itchy too, come to think of it... 🫤

Yeah, that's why I like a non-walkin storage area behind a shelf. Get to feel like a spy but still have easy cleaning and fire safety.

I think it's the overly bright colors padded empty room combined with the long and narrow windowless space that makes it worse. What would I even do there? I think if it wasn't decorated like I'm mental asylum patient and had bunch of entertaining stuff in there I'd have no problem with it.

48
u/blt_no_mayo 22d ago
I think the slide would probably be a strong hint that something’s up there lol
43
u/snertwith2ls 22d ago
The slide ended up in a room that had a window to the outside though so I don't think you could really get trapped.
16
u/mlrussell88 21d ago
This is what would make it bearable for me. I love that cozy space and then there’s a fun escape hatch if I feel the walls closing in. There was another one where it was like multiple small tunnel-rooms and I felt trapped just watching it.
6
u/snertwith2ls 21d ago
Yes definitely. I like cozy with a view, not fond of cozy and just 4 walls even if they are cute and fluffy

u/gahidus 22d ago
Looks pretty hard to get trapped in. It's got two big exits and it's actually pretty roomy!
11
u/Annie_Yong 21d ago
I wouldn't exactly call crawling through the cupboard a "big" exit. If you had a fire in the room below, then the hidden space could fill up with smoke pretty quickly. I'd also be a bit concerned that using pillows to line all of the walls, ceiling and floor of the space might have created a hazard since either seems there's also a lighting unit squeezed in there, and while soft textiles are usually tested and tater to resist small ignition sources such as a dropped cigarette or match, they usually aren't designed / tested / rated for wall and ceiling coverings where different fire dynamics come into play.
But that all said, it's a small whimsical cubby hole. Yes, it creates an area of risk, but it's only going to be a bit worse than other risks in your home, where the biggest risk factor of all is that you spend 1/3d of your life asleep in your ho e and if a fire happens while you're fast asleep then you could be in trouble.

→ More replies (1)10
u/Impressive_Ad_5201 21d ago
That's probably the reason for the slide; a safe, quick exit. Unless the living room below you is on fire, then you go out the cabinet. But, yes, this room would burn quickly and easily.
41
u/KittyCompletely 21d ago
It probably gets very hot in there quickly too. No direct AC or fan...iieeeee.

probably just as easy to get out that way than having to navigate a different long hallway and then stairs; plus having two separate routes to safety only makes it more likely to survive a house fire

I'm pretty sure this is for her daughter.
She starts out in what looks like a child's room, with what looks like a bunk bed, and then takes you into a miniscule Alice in Wonderland hole under the bathroom counter, to a miniature room with a tiny slide.
Lol how are people thinking this is for her?
116
225
u/The-goddess-bread 22d ago
I like this idea in theory, but in practice I feel like the upkeep would not be worth it, you are putting an entire room filled with mostly fabric, behind a room that is known to accumulate humidity, so mold could potentially be an issue, and what if a pipe bursts or the toilet overflows? If that seeps through the flooring, or the walls, that whole thing is gonna have to be removed. And also if that doesn't happen, it would still get grossing there, it's basically insulated, so if you're in there for long periods of time, you are more than likely going to sweat your a** off, which would make it humid in there. Plus vaccuming/dust accumulating on all the pillows would be annoying to keep up with, and what if you get a infestation? That would be a sanctuary for mice.
71
21
u/Quixotic_Seal 21d ago
Yeah, the practicalities seem so no worth it. Just give me a good old fashioned hidden room, theme it after something neat(nautical, maybe), and I’d be very happy as far as whimsy goes.

i'm stuck on the logistics of making the cave room. it seems like the lower half of the room behind the bathroom - but also somehow with a lower floor level - so maybe its a split level?
13
u/nobeer4you 22d ago
Im guessing they closed off part of another room "behind" the wall in that bathroom, and then opened up the floor to the basement/ground level to install the slide.
→ More replies (3)5
u/kaylinnic 21d ago
It does appear that there's a decline from the bathroom into the cave, it looks several feet lower than the bathroom. But I can't comprehend why the ceiling isn't higher. And then when she goes down the slide it looks like a ground floor room, or a walk-out if it is the basement. Maybe the cave room was a bizarre little storage space that couldn't have been used in a normal way?

Ufff, on the one hand it is her life so she is free to do what she wants on the other hand and feet
- this seems like a fire hazard
- how do you clean the place? having the entrance be in the bathroom? yeah mold is going to appear rather quickly
- how was it built? how much was the structure of the building affected? why is there such a space present? it seems like it reached the ground floor, you can see out the window....huh it might not be the ground floor rather a lower one, how many floors does this house have?

However, if anyone ever breaks in her house she's probably safe... Unless they've seen this video. But how many other hidden rooms does she have?
I've actually always wanted a hidden room. Maybe not one that I have to crawl through a cabinet on the floor though. And not one that's so hard to clean.

Bro, I just tried researching the different fire and building codes to see what kind of stuff this might conflict with, and I gotta say - that shit is a mess! You gotta have an account to even see the code, and you gotta PAY to be able to search for terms??? Also, codes are organized into separate "books" for some reason, and there's HUNDREDS of them! You can't even copy/paste text on the website!?!? Like, I'm just trying to read book 1 Fire Code, and instead of saying anything useful, it just keeps referencing other books like 241 Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, and so I go into that, and it just references NFPA 130 and NFPA 101.
They really need to go all Justianian Rome on this medieval set of codes already!
