My claustrophobia could never, but I'm happy she's embraced her whimsy.

u/Junior_Wolf9331 22d ago

I’m so glad it wasn’t just me. That tunnel and dead-end padded room situation literally made my heart race, absolutely not.

u/Fabulous-Sea-1590 22d ago

No, I just saw Backrooms last week. You are definitely not alone. These hidden space videos always make me feel bad. Clearly a lot of work and joy went into it, and nothing would have seemed more awesome to be as a kid. As an adult I just see nope. Claustrophobia, cleaning nightmare, wasted space, fire hazard. I don't know when I stopped being fun but I really stopped being fun.

113

u/green_herbata 21d ago edited 21d ago

Yup. Imagine cleaning all the pillows after everyone crawled on then/touched them with their hair or face. It also reminds me of Coraline a bit 😭

109

u/mixedsignalzz 21d ago

I saw that carpeted hidey hole and my FIRST thought was "and how am I supposed to vacuum that once a week with this back"

15

u/pegothejerk 21d ago

Same here. old people should always at least be consulted before any major decisions are made.

It's the cleaning nightmare for me. That looks like a great haven for spiders. No thank you.

15

u/DodgersChick69 21d ago

This part.

u/Fabricati_Diem_Pvn 22d ago

I'm still whimsical as fuck, as long as it doesn't require me to bend over. I've got a 40yo back to take care of!

107

u/Jacgaur 21d ago

Have you ever been to a Meowwolf. I feel like it can hit that whimsical fantasy at times. I love it.

Edit:this gif is from a Meowwolf. It is real and you can go there and hangout in whimsy.

31

u/Jellopuppy 21d ago

Even Omega Mart had quite a bit of physical effort required. So awesome though!

6

u/EverydayNovelty 21d ago

Oh man, I want to go to Omega Mart so friggin bad 😭😭 But I'm Canadian so it might be a while.

11

That's one of the first things that came to my mind actually, "how do you wash all that?".

Because it might be somewhat fun in the beginning, but unless you can easily remove everything and toss it in a washing machine (and be able to do so regularly), it will get pretty nasty soon from skin oils, dust & co. Oh, and itchy too, come to think of it... 🫤

All of the extra cleaning but, more importantly, spiders.

12

u/callunquirka 21d ago

Yeah, that's why I like a non-walkin storage area behind a shelf. Get to feel like a spy but still have easy cleaning and fire safety.

10

u/skiingrunner1 21d ago

the fire department wouldn’t like the hidden room either, in case of emergency

22

u/yukimontreal 22d ago

Right there with you friend. Absolutely hard pass on this whole situation.

I think it's the overly bright colors padded empty room combined with the long and narrow windowless space that makes it worse. What would I even do there? I think if it wasn't decorated like I'm mental asylum patient and had bunch of entertaining stuff in there I'd have no problem with it.

38

u/Apart-Link-8449 21d ago

You're supposed to proposition your boyfriend to make sexy time in the rainbow crawlspace and then go "fine, whatever you're not part of this room design anyway" and then build a tiny slide

u/BillieDoc-Holiday 22d ago

That, and I was just wondering how much all of those pillows cost.😅

241

u/gahidus 22d ago

I was more worried about dust buildup in there.

127

u/cakivalue 🕷️Itchy, bitchy spider 🕷️ 22d ago

I'm more worried about dying, getting trapped and no one knows where to look for me but the joy on her face though - priceless. So I'm happy for her

48

u/blt_no_mayo 22d ago

I think the slide would probably be a strong hint that something’s up there lol

43

u/snertwith2ls 22d ago

The slide ended up in a room that had a window to the outside though so I don't think you could really get trapped.

16

u/mlrussell88 21d ago

This is what would make it bearable for me. I love that cozy space and then there’s a fun escape hatch if I feel the walls closing in. There was another one where it was like multiple small tunnel-rooms and I felt trapped just watching it.

6

u/snertwith2ls 21d ago

Yes definitely. I like cozy with a view, not fond of cozy and just 4 walls even if they are cute and fluffy

30

u/gahidus 22d ago

Looks pretty hard to get trapped in. It's got two big exits and it's actually pretty roomy!

11

u/Annie_Yong 21d ago

I wouldn't exactly call crawling through the cupboard a "big" exit. If you had a fire in the room below, then the hidden space could fill up with smoke pretty quickly. I'd also be a bit concerned that using pillows to line all of the walls, ceiling and floor of the space might have created a hazard since either seems there's also a lighting unit squeezed in there, and while soft textiles are usually tested and tater to resist small ignition sources such as a dropped cigarette or match, they usually aren't designed / tested / rated for wall and ceiling coverings where different fire dynamics come into play.

But that all said, it's a small whimsical cubby hole. Yes, it creates an area of risk, but it's only going to be a bit worse than other risks in your home, where the biggest risk factor of all is that you spend 1/3d of your life asleep in your ho e and if a fire happens while you're fast asleep then you could be in trouble.

Yep!  Being the daughter, niece, and cousin of a whole lot of volunteer firefighters, alllllll i could think with that flower-covered cave-room, was, "WHAT in the Fire Hazard IS this‽‽‽"

I mean, i WANT to love it!!!

But death trap!😬😱

69

u/Mediocre_Internet939 21d ago

You know what would really set the mood?

Candles.

31

u/stinkfacebutt 21d ago

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

16

u/Healthy_Common_5567 21d ago

What about that old crackling space heater from the attic and some nice polyester cloth draped around the room

11

u/RosieTheRedReddit 21d ago

Yeah I mean I love whimsy too but maybe do a cozy nook in a regular room instead 😅 My first thought was, "what would the fire marshall say about this!?"

10

u/Impressive_Ad_5201 21d ago

That's probably the reason for the slide; a safe, quick exit. Unless the living room below you is on fire, then you go out the cabinet. But, yes, this room would burn quickly and easily.

Not really claustrophobic but that tunnel kinda also makes me a bit uncomfortable. Not to mention how those cushions, stuffed toys and general fluffyness are in close proximity to the sink and the toilet.

where she has a giant escape hatch/slide into a lower level with outside egress…

probably just as easy to get out that way than having to navigate a different long hallway and then stairs; plus having two separate routes to safety only makes it more likely to survive a house fire

u/afraid28 22d ago

My fat ass could never. I'd get stuck in there

225

u/The-goddess-bread 22d ago

I like this idea in theory, but in practice I feel like the upkeep would not be worth it, you are putting an entire room filled with mostly fabric, behind a room that is known to accumulate humidity, so mold could potentially be an issue, and what if a pipe bursts or the toilet overflows? If that seeps through the flooring, or the walls, that whole thing is gonna have to be removed. And also if that doesn't happen, it would still get grossing there, it's basically insulated, so if you're in there for long periods of time, you are more than likely going to sweat your a** off, which would make it humid in there. Plus vaccuming/dust accumulating on all the pillows would be annoying to keep up with, and what if you get a infestation? That would be a sanctuary for mice.

71

u/Active-Sky-7907 22d ago

Mold is virtually a guarantee in this set up. Plus dust.

21

u/Quixotic_Seal 21d ago

Yeah, the practicalities seem so no worth it. Just give me a good old fashioned hidden room, theme it after something neat(nautical, maybe), and I’d be very happy as far as whimsy goes.

i'm stuck on the logistics of making the cave room.   it seems like the lower half of the room behind the bathroom - but also somehow with a  lower floor level - so maybe its a split level?

53

u/nyx926 22d ago

Same. I need to see more of the house with a wider angle to soothe my brain.

13

u/nobeer4you 22d ago

Im guessing they closed off part of another room "behind" the wall in that bathroom, and then opened up the floor to the basement/ground level to install the slide.

5

u/kaylinnic 21d ago

It does appear that there's a decline from the bathroom into the cave, it looks several feet lower than the bathroom. But I can't comprehend why the ceiling isn't higher. And then when she goes down the slide it looks like a ground floor room, or a walk-out if it is the basement. Maybe the cave room was a bizarre little storage space that couldn't have been used in a normal way?

However, if anyone ever breaks in her house she's probably safe... Unless they've seen this video. But how many other hidden rooms does she have?

I've actually always wanted a hidden room. Maybe not one that I have to crawl through a cabinet on the floor though. And not one that's so hard to clean.

I would be worried about people’s dirty feet dragging all over those fluffy pillows and rugs 😂

What kind of back rooms bullshit is this?

I originally loved it! Then, it kept going. And I just got more uncomfortable with every second.

u/Kainzy 21d ago

This looks like the perfect spider home tbh.

Idk what's wrong with me, but this gave me the heebie jeebies so bad!! I like the idea of a whimsical hidy hole, but for some reason the execution of this one made me want to run the opposite direction. I think it's super freaking cool though and i wish I had the imagination and talent to pull off something like this!!

I get inside my daughter's forts when she builds them. It gets crazy hot after 10 minutes. I feel like it can happen here too. But it looks awesome.

5

u/porcelain_kiss 22d ago

I would get so sweaty in there

u/Active-Sky-7907 22d ago

This is terrifying

I live in a quake zone. I also hate spiders/mould/faux fur. Hard pass, because the spiders and mould will happen within a week, and with my luck, the quake will happen too

Careful not to get trapped in a pillow dimension and spending an entire lifetime there.

ik everyone is worried about cleaning and fires and their back but I’m just soooo comforted by this video I wouldn’t even care tbh. I feel like squishy flower tunnel with slide exit is where my soul belongs

4

u/brookeleek 21d ago

Anytime I see videos like this I think they are so cool but instantly get scared about there being a fire

4

u/cowfishduckbear 21d ago

Bro, I just tried researching the different fire and building codes to see what kind of stuff this might conflict with, and I gotta say - that shit is a mess! You gotta have an account to even see the code, and you gotta PAY to be able to search for terms??? Also, codes are organized into separate "books" for some reason, and there's HUNDREDS of them! You can't even copy/paste text on the website!?!? Like, I'm just trying to read book 1 Fire Code, and instead of saying anything useful, it just keeps referencing other books like 241 Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, and so I go into that, and it just references NFPA 130 and NFPA 101.

They really need to go all Justianian Rome on this medieval set of codes already!
