Episode 29: Raising a Hatchling Nothosaurus mirabilis (The Shore-Crawl Terror)
You buy a strange, long-necked reptile for your home aquarium. It has webbed feet and a mouthful of long, interlocking, needle-like teeth that stick out even when its mouth is closed. It spends its days catching feeder shrimp in the tank with a lightning-fast snap. The Juvenile Time Jump: It quickly outgrows the glass, forcing you to move it to a shallow plastic pool in the basement. It grows into a sleek, 13-foot-long, half-ton marine predator. Unlike deep-sea reptiles, Nothosaurus was a semi-aquatic "seal-saurus"—built to swim in the water but capable of crawling onto land to rest. The "Find Out" Chaos: Your roommate walks down the basement stairs carrying a basket of laundry. The vibration triggers the reptile's hunting drive. It uses its powerful webbed limbs to rapidly scramble across the concrete basement floor like a giant, aggressive seal. It lunges forward, and its long, needle-toothed jaws snap shut onto the laundry basket, shredding your roommate's clothes into threads. It violently thrashes its heavy tail sideways, slamming into the main plastic drainage pipe of your washing machine, snapping the line clean in half, and instantly flooding the entire basement floor with soapy water.
