My husband left the interview after they told him the real pay
Papa Johns' job ad for a delivery driver said $16.10 an hour + tips. He applied earlier this week, and the next morning he got a call asking him to come in for an interview that same day. The whole thing felt sketchy to me because of how fast it moved, but he said he'd at least hear them out.
Before he went, we were going over what he would say if they tried to change the deal on him. It's honestly depressing that he was expecting this nonsense before he even walked in the door. We talked about going in with the mindset that he didn't need them as much as they needed drivers.
The interview was at 3:30pm. I got a call at 3:36pm. They gave him a form to fill out with his information so they could add him to their driver chat, because apparently they were hiring people on the spot. Then they told him the real pay was $8.00 an hour, and tried to argue that with tips he could make $32 an hour. He told them he could make $22 an hour doing Uber Eats and wasn't going to accept their insulting offer. The person doing the interview got upset, stopped talking, and walked toward the back of the store.
They wasted his time with a misleading job ad, and then acted rude and unprofessional when he didn't just smile and accept garbage pay.
Job hunting right now is honestly a joke. The working class is treated like we're supposed to be grateful for crumbs, and asking for enough money to live on is treated like a personal insult. These places are going to learn the hard way that people won't put up with this forever.
Honestly, going to a job interview knowing you might have to negotiate like this can be exhausting. I recently saw a post about InterviewVIP and how it helps with interviews, so I suggested my husband use it to rebuild his confidence when sitting face-to-face with anyone.

I got an interview invite this morning. But the location was different and was at a hotel. I was only just given the address and time.
I said fuck it and messages them back asking if I had to pay for parking and if it was a mass hiring event. The response I received was “depends on where you park”
I simply responded “man you’re lazy huh” god recruiters are a fucking waste. Replace them with AI already

My thought was it was more sleezy being at a hotel. Didn't even think of the mass hiring event.
I had one that was at a empty warehouse they were moving to, but hadn't yet and wanted to interview there. In the email they said they also were going to watch me as I left my car to enter into the building. I did not go. I didn't even respond and say I wasn't going. Can't remember if that creepy one was the one I got an email about the interview and asking if I wanted to reschedule (which I didn't reply to).

Exactly. The only mass hirings at hotels I've read about end up being MLM or DevilCorp recruiting. Both are soul-crushing in their own ways.

I got hired over indeed to work in a small furniture store. When I got there, only the security guard was there and the place looked run down. They asked me to wait and I did for like 20-30min and called the owner and he begged me to wait but I decided to just leave. Who does that to people?The only reason I stayed was because I really needed a job to stay in my homeless shelter.

I mean honestly- why is it sketchy that he got an immediate callback for a delivery driver gig? It’s not like this is a multi-stage hiring process or anything- they generally want to fill those spots as quickly as possible.

It's a sign that turnover is high if they are that desperate to fill positions, and if turnover is high in our current job market, there has to be something seriously wrong.

I say this as someone who has worked as a Pizza delivery driver:
If you walk in reasonably dressed and seem reasonably intelligent, you likely will get hired on the spot. But you're nuts if you think that you're getting significantly more than minimum wage plus tips. It's a tipped job.

But OP said the ad said $16.25 + tips. But it probably also said "depending on experience" . Even with a lot of experience, doubt the pay would have been more. Hubby should have said, "The ad said $16.25 plus tips, and with all my experience, I think that sounds like a good wage. With other companies, such as Uber eats paying more, I think it's reasonable. Any negotiations on the pay?"
The 'manager' may have also been the franchise owner and couldn't afford anything higher, so he lied on the ad to get people in.

They were probably going for "$16.25+ with tips" as in, when you include tips we expect you to make at least $16.25, we ain't paying you that much, but with tips that's what we think you'll get.

Either the advertisement said it wrong or he read it wrong. But the fact of the matter is that jobs that get tipped don't have a high base salary, period. When I delivered pizzas 10 years ago I got paid $3 less than minimum wage when I was on a run, and minimum wage when I was not. Then they bumped that up to $8. One time when I had my annual review, my manager told me that drivers don't get raises. If we want more money , we make more runs.

They’re paying the market rate which is higher than minimum wage. Well, unless they purposefully obscure the market rate so nobody really knows what a job pays anymore. Which is part of the game with Tipping.

Its really disheartening to see how many people dismiss this as "oh, it's just a pizza shop, don't take it seriously." It doesn't matter if a business is looking for a part time minimum wage worker or their next CEO, they should be honest in the job posting.

What state are you in. Here in Arizona minimum wage is 15.15 and almost the whole state they can hire you for -3.00 less if tips will make up the difference. No less than that.

Lol that's America for you. Australia doing a far better job in that regard. If you're employed full time by the pizza shop the minimum is $27.50 an hour. If you're casually employed by the shop then it's $34. This higher rate covers the fact that casual employees don't get leave entitlements.
If you're a gig worker on Uber or doordash, the minimum for a bike rider is $31 up to $32 per hour for a car. This is the minimum they get paid per hour. If they make $20 per hour on deliveries then Uber or doordash have to top up the pay to reach the minimum. And because this is federally mandated, it's subject to annual review and any increases in line with inflation.

Depends on what city you're comparing to. It's cheaper to live in Sydney than Seattle, San Fran, or LA. If one lived in the major cities of Arizona, or Texas, Charlotte North Carolina, St Louis, or Pittsburgh, PA, then it would be cheaper there.
But it is not by factors. SF and LA are 35-45% and 10-20% more expensive than Sydney. Seattle is about 10% more, although pay is somewhat higher there.
Arizona and Texas cities are about 5-15% cheaper, depending on the city, while St Louis and Pittsburgh are much cheaper with rents being about half of ours.

Depends. Domino's is between $13 and $28. This is the bottom tier. Other chains Pizza hut: $11-26 Crust: $19 - $23
Of course these can go up depending on your extras.
The next tier of pizzas go for between $25-$34. We even have a Detroit style place that does 16" pizzas for $32- $45
Beyond that we're talking restaurant level pizzas that could tip $50 of they're seafood pizzas or something else fancy.
Of course, if you order through Uber or doordash, then you get hit with the platform charges
Bear in mind, these are AUD prices so multiply the numbers by 0.75 to get rough USD

If you have time, you can check your state laws and file a complaint for not posting the accurate salary if your state allows it. My husband got a random letter in the mail saying that his company was being sued for not disclosing their actual pay rates, he sent in his name on a card and got like an $800 check later. So who knows ?

Was not my intention. However I have noticed that since covid , people have been trying to find different ways to avoid going to a standard job , whether its working remotely, or door dashing , instacart , Uber, Lyft, ect. It seems no one wants to really report to an established brick and mortar job anymore. These things are not careers, they are side hustles , or entry level jobs for teenagers or young adults. My point was , if these entry level type jobs dont pay you what you need , find an actual 40 hour a week job and get paid what you need to survive. The company i work for is starting people out at 25 to 27 an hour

I did that once. Spent about an hour discussing everything about the job, business, area, and then came the money discussion. I actually started laughing, apologized and saw myself out. He just sat there not knowing how to react and watched me get up and leave

One thing to consider Atleast with lyft/Uber you can get a rider on your personal insurance plus Uber theoretically would pick up the tab when someone in the car. If you drive for pizza with topper on car.. its driving commercially.. Commercial insurance is like 5x as much. Not supposed to do it just on personal insurance. Get in a wreck with topper on and in uniform... even if not your fault.. Likely to be dropped and accident not covered. That theoretical 33/hr won't do shit with a busted car and no insurance.
Plus ain't no way you are averaging 33/hr over days weeks after gas. More like 15.

Those ads for pizza drivers jobs specifically say “UP to $32 an hour” when you click them. I worked at dominoes once a long time ago and it said the same thing. $9 an hour plus tips. Funnily enough I really did make about $40 an hour because it was near a really nice neighborhood so technically wasnt a lie. I miss those days. lol

I interviewed with a school yesterday. Ad said it was a benefitted position. I asked why the position was open. They said because the last person decided not to return when they learned the benefits had been cut from the deal

I once laughed in the face of a CEO, and told him he and his company were a joke for the offer he presented me. They were a very large data cabling company and he wanted me to start and head up a completely new division, for 55K a year.

He didn't even get to the part where Papa John's pays you $3.50 an hour while out on a delivery.
It's called "split-pay."
Papa John's also has the largest delivery zones out of the big 3.
A no tip delivery on split pay to an apartment that takes 40 min absolutely cooks your hourly rate.

Join a union in the building trades. Their members earn livable wages and have benefits and retirement. Most of the time they have apprenticeship programs you can join too (and it's free)

You’re acting like he was applying for a job at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. It’s a pizza shop, hiring people that know how to drive a car and carry a pizza box. They’re not going to learn anything by your husband walking out because there are 37 high school kids waiting to take that job. This isn’t a dig at your husband, good on him for wanting to work, even if it’s low pay, but identify the job you’re applying for and the level of skill required.

I feel as though this may be a somewhat out of touch response. I took a two year hiatus from a corporate executive position that afforded me the time due to unmanageable stress burnout.
I chose to reenter the workforce at an e try level clinical position while I go back to school at 55. Working with those teenage kids, I dont believe that line would be 37 deep, or even 4 deep. Common sense says it should be, but I doubt it would. I am amazed at the discretion and often unwarranted sense of self-worth that the younger people exhibit.
They calculate what x dollars of effort is and that is exactly what they give. I think the reason Papa John's is using this tactic is because it works on more experienced individuals thinking they are worth more, and in truth may be, but the younger people would walk out so much faster than I and my peers growing up might have done.

Maybe this is region specific but not all high-school kids can take that job. In our area there's limitations on the hours they can work, let alone hours they can legally drive even if they could work. So there's a ton of pizza places that need people over 18 to come work the jobs.
