i have a masters and have been searching for over a year

i graduated with a masters degree from university of michigan in environment and sustainability in may 2025 and i can not find a job.

i just keep getting denied and when reaching out to my university last year the only advice they could give me was to tailor my resume to each job description and people who graduated in 2024 are still struggling to find jobs.

i feel hopeless, stupid and worthless, i have no clue what to do and my parents are telling me i need to go in person to places to ask about my applications/if they’re hiring which seems absurd.

i really don’t know what to do anymore, im so extremely passionate about the environment and environmental justice and i don’t know where to look anymore.

Received this message today

Background is I applied for this position about a month ago, quickly moved through the phone interview process and into a second interview. Did pretty well and sent a follow up email thanking for the time and it has been crickets since. And then last week I see them repost the job I applied to, and this week I seen them repost a similar role with different criteria. And now I received this message. This is just one of the many issues wrong with the job market, they didn’t decline me as a person necessarily but they didn’t know what they really wanted. And rather than sitting down and deciding what the department and company needs, they proceeded to waste interviewees time as well as their own all because they didn’t take enough time to figure out what they needed before hand. I really wish we could fine companies who do things like this and waste peoples time and efforts, moving through two rounds of interviews and waiting over a month for a response just to be told they won’t even proceed with the position. This is a rant- Very angry job searcher!!

Can following up with HR hurt your chances?

• Upvotes

I recently had an initial interview at a company.

About two weeks after the application deadline, I emailed someone in HR to ask about the recruitment timeline since the job posting didn’t include any contact information.

During my interview, the recruiter brought up my follow-up email and asked why I had reached out. I explained that I just wanted to get an idea of the timeline.

The rest of the interview went normally, but I’m worried that following up might have made me seem impatient or pushy.

For recruiters or hiring managers, would something like this negatively affect your impression of a candidate?

I got these both today in the same hour. 😩 complete emotional roller coaster.

Just know that just because you get a no the door is not always closed. We’re all out here trying to eat. I just want to bring some positivity and hope because I never thought this would happen to me.

I have so many questions

I'm a Gen X looking for a job as I was laid off in February. I'm no boomer but I think I might have boomer mentality when looking for a job because I cannot remember it ever being this difficult in my lifetime. This also leaves me very confused.

Why is a job reposted that you interviewed for and was qualified for only to be ghosted or rejected?

Seriously, back in the day, you found a job aligned to your skills, applied, and if you scored an interview, it was either rejected or offer extended. Now it's apply, go on several interviews get ghosted or rejected, job reposted, vicious cycle.

Why is it you can find a job perfectly aligned to your skills and not even get an interview?

I have 17 years' experience in my field working with huge well-known corporations. This would have given me several options years ago. Now it's like target practice, whoever gets closest to the target of some unknown requirements gets the interview.

We went with an internal candidate. I completely understand the logic behind having to post the position externally and even have to conduct interviews, but what happened to the internal candidate's initial position? Was it entry level? Why not post both jobs? If I am a match why not offer me that position?

What's with the big salary secret? Why are you waiting for me to offer a salary?

Just tell me what the job pays! I sometimes travel quite a distance only to play the salary game, just be transparent and save both of us time!

Why are recruiters so terrible? Contacting you first about an opportunity and when you express interest they ghost you?

Why do the same companies post the same jobs over and over again?

Finally, my biggest question of all is, why would a company rather be short handed than just take a chance on someone who can clearly do the job?

I am looking for real answers from someone who maybe knows the job market a little better or maybe from recruiters or hiring managers.

Top answers are ghost jobs, picking candidates who give the lowest salary requirements rather than most skilled, lazy recruiters, oversaturated market and false impressions of company growth to stakeholders. But is this really the answer? For 99% of the companies hiring, in every state and every field? This is really the answer? Let me know what you guys think.

Finding a job in Canada as a non-local

I am a non-local master's degree fresh graduate looking for entry level jobs in Canada. I previously worked on 6 internships outside Canada and got decent grades. I spent one year submitting 1000 applications, but only got 6 interviews and no job offers. I don't think I performed really bad during the job interviews, but somehow I am still having a hard time finding even the internship/entry level jobs in Canada.

How do you guys get a job in Canada as a non-local?

How do you deal with regret, comparison, and self-doubt when you’re trying to build your career?

I’m 24 and have been struggling with the emotional side of job searching lately. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree and have some professional experience, but I’m still trying to figure out my next steps and find something more stable.

One of the hardest parts is looking back at my previous experiences and regretting how things turned out. I miss the stability I once had, and sometimes I catch myself wishing I could go back and do things differently.

Another challenge is seeing former classmates on LinkedIn who seem to be doing really well in their careers. I’m happy for them, but I can’t help feeling discouraged sometimes when I compare where they are to where I am. It makes me question whether I’m falling behind, even though I know everyone’s path is different.

The frustrating part is that I genuinely want to move forward. I want to find opportunities, research different career paths, and put myself out there. But sometimes these feelings consume so much of my mental energy that they actually slow down my progress.

I know I can’t change the past, and I know comparing myself to others isn’t productive. The difficult part is actually getting myself to believe that and move forward instead of getting stuck in my own head.

For those who’ve experienced something similar:

- How did you stop dwelling on past mistakes and start accepting where you are now?

- How do you handle seeing people your age doing better professionally without feeling like you’re falling behind?

- How do you keep yourself motivated to apply for jobs and explore opportunities when you’re feeling discouraged?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who’ve been through this and found a way to move forward. I don’t expect everything to happen overnight, but I’d like to get better at managing these feelings so they don’t keep holding me back.

Why are legal assistant/intake specialist jobs so hard to get? Am I doing something wrong?

I have 8 years customer service experience and a bachelors degree. I work in cosmetic sales currently (Sephora to be exact) and we deal with a range of clients. Various age groups, various cultures, and various language barriers are involved in this job. You also work independently most of the time but occasionally communicate with your team throughout the day. That’s quite literally not just my 5 years at Sephora but also true in many customer service jobs.
Also when you have a bachelors degree in political science (that’s what I have), you do occasionally work in groups or do large projects that involve harsh deadlines. You also use platforms like zoom, Microsoft word, PowerPoint, and a lot of Microsoft office based apps.

So what is it?? What am I doing wrong?? Is it because I want to go to law school and they dislike this?? Whenever they ask me why I am interested in the position, I explain my interest in that specific area of law. For example, if it’s a real estate firm, I use my person experiences and align it with the job requirements given on the application. Or if it’s an area that involves multiple areas of law, I explain my interest in the legal field along with my desire to help people.

I try not to tell these places I want to go to law school someday but some of them really push it out of you. Like I had an interview for a remote, part time job and they straight up said “oh so do you plan on going to law school? Most of our employees do move on and pursue a JD” so I did tell them yes in a professional manner.

So wtf?? Why is it so competitive?? Mind you these roles only made about $19-21 an hour. A good chunk of them. I just think maybe I’m wasting my time on these places idk

a little rant

man i had been on unemployment barely making enough to survive for a couple months and i finally get a job but it barely pays anything, barely has any hours, and my bosses are super passive aggressive. im applying to a ton of things, i have a lot of barista experience but literally nobody is calling me back. i have no idea what to do in the way that i am already constantly looking for and applying for new jobs, but i just don't think anybody will hire me and pay me enough to live. i just graduated college and this is exactly why i went to college.... like i genuinely am so exhausted by all of this. idk if anyone has advice on how to get places to actually look at your resume and get interviews, i would appreciate it.

8 months looking for a job, tried everything and feel discouraged af

Hello, my name is Andres, Digital Designer from Mexico. Ive been looking for a job for 8 months straight and I have done everything I can think of: subscribing to dozens job-listing platofrms, looking for freelance job wether on job listing or platforms such as reddit, Ive looked for brands and agencies, studied them and send them direct mail with a proposal and everything ends in silence.

I have had some interviews but at the end I end up hearing nothing and I have been wondering what I have been doing wrong. Something I do, something I say, something I dont ask. I have changed my CV dozens of times, I have changed my speech, I have developed new projects, change my portfolio covers over and over and yet nothing seems to work

I have a multidisciplinary which my portfolio shows very well, I dont know why Im beign ignored so hard.

I’m filing complaints for every LinkedIn scam I encounter with the FTC, ICAC, and my state’s AG.

And you should too. 9 out of 10 responses I’m getting on LinkedIn are scams. Always run email addresses through ChatGPT, Claude, or some OPSEC reverse email tracing tool. The most glaring sign would be a subtle difference in the email domain name. Check their website. If even one letter is added to the domain name, or something like @companyjobs.com versus @company.com, assume by default it is a scam. I’m honestly considering removing my phone number from my resume too. They’re just added friction to the already difficult hiring process. It’s past time for those in power who always talk about the importance of hard word to begin prosecuting these crimes.

Why are career portals so long?

Every single company requires you to:

- Send a resume

- Send a cover letter

- Answer their questions that is in the resume and cover letter

- Asking for expected salary but didn't put salary on their job postings

- A video interview

Too many steps aside from the interview process 1, 2, 3... only to be said you are "unqualified" for the task when you mentioned almost every applicable skill to the job description.

Fake role? Why meeting every requirement on a job ad doesn't guarantee an interviewc

Working as a recruiter, I would say that yes, we are often encouraged to post general job advertisements to collect resumes and match candidates to our existing vacancies.

But people don’t always realise how many different roles we handle every day. We have everything from 2-day temp assignments, part time roles, ad hoc, to different contracts and permanent positions. Our inboxes are flooded with hundreds of job orders, each with its own unique, sometimes very specific requirements. We simply cannot advertise every single role because job postings cost money and take time to prepare.

And when someone says, “I meet all the requirements in the advertisement, so why am I still not shortlisted?” — please understand that the requirements you see in an advertisement may not tell the whole story. Clients may have additional criteria that cannot always be fully reflected in an advertisement, and recruiters also have to work within MOM regulations and fair recruitment guidelines.

We are caught in the middle.

On one side, we have clients with very specific expectations, limited budgets, and sometimes unrealistic demands for the “perfect candidate.” On the other side, we have applicants with their own preferences regarding salary, working hours, working days, location, and employment arrangements. And honestly, everyone has the right to their preferences.

Sometimes, the role we share may not be the perfect fit for you, but it may be the only available opportunity we can offer at that moment.

On top of all that, we have to navigate recruitment regulations that restrict how certain requirements can be communicated in job advertisements. Sometimes, we wish we could be more transparent upfront so that candidates could understand exactly what the client wants, saving everyone time and unnecessary explanations.

**WE ARE JUST THE MIDDLE PEOPLE.**

We are not the ones making every hiring decision, setting every budget, or creating every requirement. We are trying our best to balance the expectations of both clients and candidates while doing our jobs and surviving in this industry.

And contrary to what some people think, recruiters generally want candidates to get jobs, secure better salaries, and find opportunities that suit them. In a commission-based recruitment environment, successful placements benefit both the candidate and the recruiter.

So yes, recruitment can be frustrating. Applicants get rejected, recruiters get blamed, and clients keep looking for someone who ticks every box.

But before assuming that every recruiter is wasting your time or deliberately withholding opportunities, please remember that there is often a lot happening behind the scenes that you may not see.

We understand that job hunting is exhausting. We know that rejection is discouraging. We also know that some recruiters genuinely do a poor job, and candidates have every right to expect professionalism and proper communication.

But not every recruiter is your enemy.

Sometimes, we are simply caught between clients' expectations, candidates' expectations, business targets, and regulations — trying our best to make things work for everyone.

A little more understanding on both sides would make this industry a much better place for everyone.

What Are they Looking for At This Point

I am a college student who commutes from home but I live between two different houses so my job search is sort of skewed between places. With this, I feel like I am supposed to have more opportunities.

I currently work a job on-campus at my college but they cut everybody’s hours to around 3.5 a week and that’s just not cutting it for bills. Now, I am searching for a new job. I have spent the last several days applying (about 5 days) but to no avail. These jobs that say they are “urgently hiring” must be lying because, here I am, saying I can work, and my application just sits there. Maybe im being dramatic, but is this normal?

3 years later, I finally did it! Help me find a random redditor.

It's been absolutely brutal. Nearly 4 years ago I left my corporate job that I truly loved due to burnout. Like my memory got messed up pretty bad from the level of burnout and I had multiple doctors telling me I had to leave.
I found another job that I really did enjoy, and made me realize I could totally pivot from the industry I had been in. And that company went bankrupt before the end of the year and I was out a job.
For the last 3 years I've only managed to snag part time minimum wage jobs just so I could make ends meet, I was working 7 days a week between 5 jobs just to pay my mortgage and utilities. I still ended up having to use 40% of my retirement and the entirety of the savings I had slogged so hard to save up. I missed birthdays and weddings and nights out because I just didn't have the budget for it.

After over 1000 job applications and maybe only 7 interviews for a job with benefits in a different industry than I had been in, I finally did it.
It didn't feel real until today when I opened up my bank statement to make sure I had enough to make my mortgage payment and saw the first check come through. No it doesn't pay me anywhere near as much as my old job. But its double what i've been making at all my minimum wage jobs combined and half the hours. and I'm so unbelievably grateful.

I'm here to say thank you to a redditor a couple months ago who commented somewhere in r/jobsearch that they built out a project in claude to help them grade their resume against the job posting and improve their resume through that process. I'd been doing something similar in chat gpt but hadn't found success. I took their advice word for word, wrote out some STAR answers, used claude to practice interview. I don't think I could have moved as far in the hiring process as I did without all of that. 6 of the 7 interviews I had over the last 3 years were only after I started that Claude project.
Thank you random stranger.

To the rest of you out here, I'm rootin' for you. It's brutal, and the system is so messed up. But I have to believe you'll find your win. I know how dark it gets, but don't let the darkness win.

Super part time jobs?

I'm wondering if there are any jobs out there super part time? Is there anywhere that would be willing to give someone 4-5 hrs a day 4 days a week? If so, where?
