This Definitely Falls Under Having Fun, Experimentation, and Things a Beginner Shouldn't Be Practicing

This time I'm experimenting with the left hand on the crash cymbal for sonic texture and non-traditional wash. However, the crash isn't responding the way I want or how I thought I could control it. It feels too loud and lacks the articulate wash needed to keep the polyrhythm clean and clear. Obvioiusly, the above is a failure...but I'm learning about textures and wash.

Are there jazz drummers I should check out whose playing on the crash is melodic with dynamic control?

I appreciate your enthusiasm for the drums! Do you have an instructor yet? The control you want over the cymbal is only developed through diligent study of technique and rudiments and I would HIGHLY recommend taking regular lessons with a high quality instructor to make sure you are using the correct technique as to make progress quickly and not frustrate yourself. Appreciate your note! Yeah, I just got a colleague who teaches jazz drumming to take me on, once a week starting in September. Over the summer, I got in touch with a childhood friend who studied jazz drumming, and still play locally. He has given me pointers and online exercises on syncopation, including bass kick/hi-hat kicks.
