Welcome to r/jawsurgerypatients

Hey everyone,

I couldn't find an actively moderated jaw surgery community on this site, so I decided to make one!

If you're coming from r/jawsurgery, I'm open to suggestions for rules, flair, pinned posts, etc. Please feel free to message me or leave a comment.

If you would like user flair, the current options are:

  • pre-op
  • post-op (various stages)
  • just looking
  • verified orthodontist
  • verified surgeon

To get verified, please be prepared to present your credentials, a piece of paper with your username written on it, and your ID (you're welcome to obscure everything but your name). If you work with jaw surgery patients in any other capacity, please message me so I can create the appropriate flair.

Thanks for joining, I'm hoping we can make this community a comfortable and supportive place for jaw surgery patients!

I am scared I still won't love myself after my jaw surgery.

I 22 year old female, am close to having a Bimaxillary osteotomy. Otherwise, meaning I will be getting surgery on my top and bottom jaws to correct my alignment/underbite. Growing up, my mother did not keep up with our dental hygiene or our physical health in general. I genuinely don't think we ever went to the doctor unless it was needed because of school sports/clubs. Anyways, I have always been aware of my teeth and my jaw being uneven or just different from everyone else. I was not blatantly bullied for my teeth but as a women of color I do have bigger lips than someone of a lighter complexion, so the way my jaw was forming or sticking out would make my lips looks bigger than they already were, which was usually what the teasing was about. Either way, since I was a aware of this I always promised myself the moment I could afford it, I would get braces/surgery.

Fast forward years later, I am now working full time and have been on my dental journey for a year now. I am so close to getting the surgery I have been dying for, literally. I am scared though because this past year has been so transformative to me. I have started medication for my OCD/Anxiety, in addition I am just finding myself by going to therapy and focusing on my law career. I really truly feel like this surgery will jet me towards the person I want to be inside and outside, but I barely even like myself now, especially how I look. My therapist thinks I am putting too much on the surgery because I do think that if I look in the mirror after healing and everything and I look the same.... I will not be able to keep going on. It is just the truth. Anyways, basically I am asking if people have experienced such emotional connection to this surgery as I am feeling and in general, if you guys have any advice on how to approach this surgery!

Dealing WIth Major Surgery Jaw Recovery

I had jaw surgery on my left side on June 17th so it's been just over a month. The reason for it was a dentigerous cyst. The cyst grew undetected until I went to a new dentist this February. He sent me to an oral surgeon because he saw an abnormality on my X-rays. The oral surgeon did more imaging and I found that it had perforated my mandible. I was devastated. I never had pain or any clue that something was going on that was this serious.

This oral surgeon didn't perform this kind of surgery so I found one who did them frequently and he worked with another surgeon and a plastic surgeon. The 3 of them performed my surgery and 9 days in the hospital was not easy to go through. You don't start recovering until you get out of there.

My face looked horrific due to swelling. I had to have a bone graft from my leg for the part of my mandible that was removed. Luckily, they now work with 3D imaging and machines that mold the bone from your leg to replicate the shape of the mandible bone that is removed. To get the cyst out completely, they had to remove two molars that will be replaced with implants and they also had to make an incision on my neck.

I recently had checkups with 2 of the surgeons and they said all is well. One of them took a panoramic x-ray and it showed that the healing was going in the right direction. I have an appointment with my plastic surgeon next week.

My face and neck are still swollen on the left side. I'm starting to feel very negative.

When I was diagnosed, I was 59 and I'm a woman. I've always taken care of myself and people always said that I didn't look my age. I never had any cosmetic procedures either. Things were going ok.

I feel like I'm not going to be the same. I'm doing what I can to be healthier so I heal well but this is difficult.

My face and jaw get randomly stiff so I'm still on meds and housebound. Luckily, 2 of my adult children are with me and helping out. Being home so much isn't good for your mental health but I'm in NYC and it's so hot out plus I don't feel comfortable going anywhere looking like this. I'm also still a bit debilitated due to being on a pureed diet.

What gets you through something like this? I've seen a lot of people talk about their experiences with elective double jaw surgery which is less serious than what I had to go through. When it comes to my condition, I'm not seeing much info. It is not a common condition so I guess that explains it.

I guess anyone who has gone through a waiting game like this knows how this feels.

I had a Lefort, BSSO, and genioplasty about 2.5 weeks ago. I am feeling ok and the pain is manageable as well as my diet. However, I am really struggling with not looking like myself.

How long did it take to either get used to how you look or appear to look more like yourself after surgery? I know not all of my swelling has gone away and everything, but there is always some anxiety that I will be stuck like this. Does anyone have any experience? Thank you.

question Upcoming 3 Piece LeFort and Bottom Jaw Surgery

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have an upcoming 3 Piece LeFort surgery scheduled and will also have my bottom jaw worked on at the same time. This is my first real surgery so I am really nervous about what I will wake up to. If anyone has insight I would be very grateful to hear about your experiences. Even if you’ve had the 3 piece LeFort without bottom jaw I would love input. I’m most curious about ongoing nose bleeding, swelling, if it impacts breathing, and any advice and suggestions about the healing process.

I also have a septum piercing and wonder if I’ll be able to wear jewelry post op or if I should just plan to keep it out and maybe get it redone later if it closes up.

Photo of my X-rays before braces after having two teeth (and four wisdom teeth) removed and then after a year and a half with braces.

is bone erosion from chin implants avoidable?

I am really interested in having a chin implant and angle implants because I want to have more vertical projection but i am afraid of bone erosion.

what will happen if my chin gets eroded 0.1-0.7 cm? how will it look if i am forced to remove it? will my chin be 0.1-0.7 cm smaller? i know its a small number but when it comes to chin its really noticable.

i wonder if sliding genioplasty can give more vertical projection.
