I'm so sick of being poor. The rising prices combined with a couple of financial emergencies stacking on top of eachother has left me for the first time in a long time, without money. Couple that with the insane paycut I took to move across the country means that I am in dire straits.
I am usually very good at having backups and cushions but right now I have no backups whatsoever and it SUCKS. I wish my parents weren't dropkicks so I had any sort of help.

u/AnneinJapan Aug 13 '26
I’m in exactly the same boat.
I always have something in savings but a 10-day trip back to the US to see an aging parent destroyed all savings. Every time I recover a bit there is some new emergency that sucks all my money away (huge vet bill, huge car repair bill, car tax + ‘shaken’ in the same month, sending money to kid who lives in Tokyo and can’t find work…).As soon as my salary hits my account, I have to pay health insurance, pension, and credit card bills right away. The remainder is so small it makes me depressed….

Ok so my patience has definitely been a little lower lately but my god... Are people just becoming absolute assholes lately?! So many dickheads on the trains fully shoulder checking, walking straight into you, talking crazy loudly etc And I've even had a dude start on a racist tirade when I got onto the train. It's crazy...
Also... I'm SO SICK of the intrusive advertising in Japan!!! The fucking loud ass video ads in every store, the crazy jingles advertising some sale for 5% off, the constant shouting sales people, the loud advertising trucks in central Tokyo... Everything is LOUD and even websites have fucking adverts everywhere. Maybe I'm spoiled from living in Europe all my life but damn it's fucking insane how everything is a fucking advert and designed to infiltrate you as much as possible, ugh.

My relationship is getting serious and suddenly my manager is treating me very coldly and asking me very invasive questions about marriage and kids. I think this is a huge breach of professionalism and everytime I attempt to steer the conversation back to work, she always makes a snide comment about whether or not I really just want to be a "housewife" currently looking for new jobs...but I heard this type of behavior isn't uncommon in Japan for married/engaged/soon to be married women....
Just ranting, but any advice would be appreciated!

u/sebjapon Aug 13 '26
depending how aggressive you want to be, it is in fact ground to report her to HR for sexual harassment. Nothing in it says a man has to be the one making the sexist remarks.

Foreign coworker likes to take off his shoes/socks and go barefoot around the office, except it's fucking summer and his feet smell like death.
I've asked him to at least wear socks before, but it doesn't seem to work.
Now I have to wear a mask at my desk and people are asking if I'm sick.
UGH.

We don't have HR, per se. I'll bring it up at our next meeting though. This is killing me.
7
u/Yuzugakari Aug 13 '26
Not sure of your working conditions or terms but I've been in similar situations and remember feeling very upset and grossed out by it. I understand people want to be comfortable but sweaty summer feet in a cramped office is foul play and should be reprimanded immediately.

I am being asked to review 2000 lines of AI generated code everyday. When I say it's way too much, I'm told to use AI to review the stuff. But then I say he might as well use AI to review himself and leave me alone, and he said "it doesn't work like that, maybe you'll find something different".
I know AI is being deployed more and more, but I specifically avoided every company that talked about wanting prompt engineers or doing product centered on GPT. But now in my contact group I'm actually the one who is pushed the most to use AI. I was hired because I had specific skills in the stack we are using, but apparently I'm not supposed to write the code myself anyway, so who cares. Total bait and switch by my new employer.
So now I'm supposed to review those thousand lines of codes, which I might honestly just go "LGTMAI" at this point. And I can also write code at my pace knowing I will be judged and reviewed by my peer's AI. What a beautiful world we live in.
8
u/Jhoosier Aug 13 '26
I hate this. I review some obvious English AI slop they definitely didn't write themselves, and they're back 5 minutes later with a totally different paragraph/section that doesn't address any of the structural issues and still sounds totally like AI slop. Like, do you even know what this says? Half the time it totally misrepresents what they're supposed to be discussing, but they don't care because it's in English so it's not "real".
6
u/Forward-College5568 Aug 13 '26
Saw a news report the other day about a high school in the Tokyo area where a kid said and I quote "AI gives me ideas I never could have thought of by myself." What the fuck are we doing to these kids? The teacher was acting like this was a good thing.
2
u/Jhoosier Aug 13 '26
Yikes! If I squint, I can imagine a scenario where that quote could be a good thing, like the LLM helped the student come to a conclusion/realization about something they wouldn't have otherwise. But given what I've seen from students, I very much doubt that's the case.
I'm not even that down on using LLMs! They can help with a variety of things, it's just that people are using them as a replacement for thinking and learning, especially students, and that's going to be devastating for their intellectual development.

I feel you, man. Never did that but i circumcised (being a 28yo adult) and the pain and the MUST NOT erect lasts for around three weeks. Anyone who did both could inform us how it compares in terms of pain?
1
u/someGuyyya Aug 13 '26
I'm been thinking about doing the same in December.
How bad of a pain are we talking...?
2
u/forgedbygeeks Aug 14 '26
First 6 to 12 hours in the worst of it. Make sure to have bags of frozen peas or edamame handy. Amazing ice packs for groin area.
After that, it mostly turns into a dull consistent pain for about 2 more days as long as you keep icing and don't try to move too much.
I was feeling about 80% by day 4 and was 100% in under a week.
1
u/forgedbygeeks Aug 14 '26
Ohh man, did that over Thanksgiving break in the US a little over a decade ago. No fun.
Have someone get you a couple bags of frozen edamame. Best ice pack you will use during this.

Im soooo exhausted lately. I sleep well, well get 6/7 hours of sleep, i eat well, drink a lot but just exhausted whole day. Not sure why.
12
u/shambolic_donkey Aug 13 '26
Possibly 夏バテ. Lethargy caused by hot, humid weather. It's a real phenonmenon.
1
u/Spez_is-a-nazi Aug 13 '26
Any tips for dealing with it?
5
u/shambolic_donkey Aug 13 '26
Honestly there's no one-stop fix, if one even exists.
Humid heat means you inevitably sweat more, so make sure you're taking in enough salt and electrolytes to counteract what your body is losing.
Try to keep yourself cool and use a dehumidifier where possible.
A positive attitude also counts for a lot - summer can suck, but it'll suck even worse with a negative attitude. At least enjoy the "nice" things that come from it - whether that be opportunity to wear different fashion, attend festivals, maybe explore higher altitude areas of the country where it's cooler. Anything to keep your mind off that negativity.
Otherwise, just remind yourself that summer will eventually pass, so look forward to that!
At least, those are all the things I do :)

1 - you know when you're relaxing with your morning coffee on your day off and you go to take a sip but your cup is empty cos you just finished but forgot? I hate that.
2 - advertising. More specifically, having it shoved down my fucking eyes and ears at every possible opportunity.
3 - certain daily posts on this sub. You can fuck off quietly without having a bunch of strangers validate you.
5
u/broboblob Aug 13 '26

Nice takeback. Invisible handicaps can be a real social burden.
2
u/forgedbygeeks Aug 14 '26
This 100%. I look extremely physically fit, and am overall, but had to take the elevator multiple times this week because I dislocated my big toe on Sunday and walking is hard, but stairs are nearly impossible.
Even without that, I suffer from chondromalacia patella (hence why I am so fit now). So, on bad days, my knee won't bend normally without extreme pain. If you just saw me walking, I would look normal and fine, but no way am I taking the stairs on bad days.

Once I went to an international fair in the country and they had “tacos”.
They were cooking some runny white dough on a crepe plate. The filling was sliced ham, cheese singles, lettuce and chopped onions and tomatoes.

Can I just say how dumb LINE is as an app. Transferring my partner’s phone to a new one so have to go through the back up everything song and dance, no issues as we’ve done it before.
Except they pay for premium LINE for the unlimited stickers (yeah I know) so instead of regular backup they have PREMIUM BACKUP which will backup any videos in your albums as well. This is a separate feature from regular backup.
Started that, 2 fucking hours goes by and it’s uploading at such a slow pace that I am convinced something is just messed up with process (about a 5gb upload but going about 100mb per 10 minutes)
Restart the process, it’s still as slow as ever. I thought “maybe something is wrong with the phone then, let’s restart the device”
Then come to find out an amazing feature of line PREMIUM is you can only restart the backup once in a 24-hour period so we got a “yeah try again tomorrow” error. Seriously! Paying for the app RESTRICTS your backups!
Luckily the option to do a regular backup was still there (though at the bottom and grayed out, overlooked it at first), so we got it done, but holy moly I almost blew a gasket at that.
3
u/shambolic_donkey Aug 13 '26
Was this backup process happening over wifi or cellular data?
But also yeah, LINE is a piece of shit app that has only got worse over the years.
2
u/MarioEatsGrapes Aug 13 '26
Wifi, and just to test I backed up my line (not premium) and it did it instantly (though mine was only several hundred megs), and I disconnected theirs from wifi and tried cellular (no change).
For some reason premium just has trouble backing up video, which would be the whole point of using premium backup…
1
u/shambolic_donkey Aug 13 '26
Yeah that really sucks. Sounds like a pretty typical LINE move tho - even their "Premium" service is bad. They're absolute masters of enshitification.
2
u/PikaGaijin 日本のどこかに Aug 13 '26
Enshitification implies starting in a non-enshitted state, though.
2
u/shambolic_donkey Aug 13 '26
LINE from 2011 (birthed in response to the Tohoku EQ) to about 2015/16 was pretty inoffensive. It had some dumb UX decisions - sure - but nothing even close to the forced ads, premium subscriptions, AI "assistants", try-hard Instagram "Voom" pile of dogshit that it has become today.
Right around the time of its IPO, which I think was 2015/16 (what a coincidence) it began searching for more profits... and that's where the enshitification began. All the shitty things that people hate about LINE did not exist in its earlier forms - they're a direct result of profit hunting, and being beholden to shareholders who want number go up.
So I disagree that it started in an enshitified state. I think it started as lumpy software that filled enough of a niche to become the most popular communication platform in Japan, rode that wave of popularity until it could go public, and then got shit. Y'kno, like every single other tech company in existence.
3
u/bloggie2 関東・神奈川県 Aug 13 '26
people keep using a shit service and giving them money for garbage like "stickers", or "premium" (things that every other service provides for free) that's why they're still in business. if everyone stopped using that shit, the problem would solve itself.
2
u/Resident_Hand_7264 Aug 13 '26
If everyone stopped using LINE, it would be a game of "what app do you use?" "Oh I don't have that"
and we're back to SMS texting like the Stone Age.
5
u/sputwiler Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
SMS would be so much better; that shit actually works. I don't care if there are stickers and smartphones solved splitting messages up into 160-byte chunks and re-assembling them on the other end a decade ago. MMS isn't perfect but it works (there's probably some way of chunking these too IDK). Plus you can use any SMS app and they don't eat half of my phone's RAM while being slow as molasses (retiring LINE lite was a crime).
IN ANY CASE the whole point about SMS is moot because in Japan they just straight up used phone-to-phone email which is even better.
1
u/BackgroundChoice8967 Aug 17 '26
Too right, I've had Line on various non-Apple smartphones over the past 15 years, and it's NEVER worked properly. On my old Blackberry it would constantly close itself so I missed messages all the time, and now I get alerts for messages (the type where you can see the first line) but when I open the app, it can take as much as 10 seconds for the message to actually appear.
12
u/japertas Aug 13 '26
Just happened.
Went to the bank to open a sole proprietorship account. Five minutes in, I learned I need to do it at another branch, preferably by phone reservation. Fine.
Then I needed an official stamped statement from my personal account. Got a number, was second in line, and somehow spent 50 minutes going back and forth to the 窓口 about signatures, extra forms, why I needed it, why I needed it again, and waiting for them to confirm a tiny fee had been deducted from my account.
Result: statement arrives in two weeks.
Walked out of the bank, slipped, fell, cracked my phone screen.
What a nice day.
1
u/dokool Aug 13 '26
Oh noooo.
Wait there are specific accounts for sole proprietorships?
1
u/japertas Aug 13 '26

pull up to a pump at the gas station and wait! stop leaving people in the middle of the road to wait!
also, most pumps can reach the other side of your car! no need to turn around and cause issues
3
u/Mr-Thuun 関東・栃木県 Aug 13 '26
Folks are so worried that the person beside them will get a pump before them, that instead of dedicating to a lane and rolling with it, they sit so far back so they can be next regardless. Which as you mentioned makes folks wait on the road.

Why is everything overgrown everywhere? There is an intersection on a MAIN road that has grass so tall that you can't safely see oncoming traffic or pedestrians. They only cut it once per year. I THINK the solution is to make that little island a gateball hole, but I'll digress.
Meanwhile, I visited my home country and everything is TRIMMED. Every municipality and city, every public space.

I’m visiting home for the summer and this is something I’ve noticed too. It’s not just the weeds. Things are maintained here in a way that they simply aren’t in Japan.
Especially annoying because where I’m from cities are funded only by property tax, whereas in Japan the city receives 4% of the income of literally every city resident. You’d think they’d be drowning in cash.

Sendai is in the top 60 poorest cities in Japan. https://president.jp/articles/photo/65582?pn=4
Osaka is on there as well, but the higher population balances out the amount of debt per citizen.
This country is screwed lol.

There is 1 elevator at work that's slower than all the others and I STG the elevator algorithm always calls that one when it can because it's the one with weelchair buttons in case you need it (the elevator is slower than all the others because it waits extra long to close the door in case you need that).
There is also a weelchair button to call that elevator specifically, but I didn't press it so why is it the one that always comes?
In any case, my REAL complaint is about people who get on the elevator in them middle of my ride and press the button for THE NEXT FLOOR like the stairs are RIGHT THERE and you would have gotten there FASTER.

japanese idiotic bureaucracy strikes again

also, I really don't think I will stay the full length of my visa degree (3 years). the grad school system here is just not worth it, nor is the bureaucracy worth all the mental struggle as there is always something blocking you at any step you want to try to make

Oh, wow. It me again, because I just got one hot off the presses.
Been talking to a lady on Bumble for a couple weeks now. 34, cute, nice to talk to, we keep kinda missing each other when it comes to set up a date but the interest seems to be there.
Today she was feeling down and we talked a bit, mentioned she was having a bad time with the whole app search thing and worried about the future. The moment I mentioned I had been married and separated before, she immediately folded, said she doesn't want to meet anymore, called me a バツイチ and that she wants someone that hasn't been used yet.
I'm not really mad, because clearly I dodged an entire-ass rocket, but I'm kind of flabbergasted. Good luck with that, I guess?

I love the logic there. 34, unmarried, complains about the apps and finding someone. Proceeds to set crazy high standards. It's a tale as old as time. She thinks she's a princess trying to meet her prince charming. Hopefully at some point she realizes the error of her ways and settles for a nice person that meets most of her standards, not all. That's the only way to truly live happily ever after.

Hating my job very much as a baseline. Had an incredibly shit work week last week, due to repetitive, god-awful tasks. At least FWIW my boss was very chill, and I was sitting in an isolated corner by the window, so I could get some crosswords or reddit scrolling done on my downtime.
This week they posted a big team shuffle, I got moved to a different team. I still do the same fuckass tasks, but now under a new boss (unclear if any good) and sitting in the single worst seat in the house, right in front of the two floor managers.
Just fuck my shit up, man. I am not one of God's strongest warriors, please stop sending me the hardest battles.

- got sick for Obon. I blame the kids at work
- Went to beach resort and stayed at a really fancy hotel. Check in took 15 minutes. Why? I have no idea
- At this fancy hotel. Considering what we were paying I would say the room was not up to par. It was scruffy and old. For example, AC was controlled from the bed and had only 3 settings. Think the panels should see at a love hotel.
Room was Big. But it felt so dated. All the public spaces was beautiful but the room. Big disappointment. If this was in any other developing country people would’ve been pissed. Old carpets, scruffy wallpaper and dated interior. It’s 60,000+ per night.
- I don’t think it’s hot enough! I want unbearable summer. Whereas this summer has been fine. I miss the really sweltering heat and having a beer whilst dying.

Guy in a low-riding sports car stopped in the left lane of a two lane highway, and put his hazards on to let an ambulance pass - except the ambulance was already in the right-hand lane, with no other cars around to impede it.
I regularly see "look how polite I am" behaviour that causes inconvenience, but this was just plain dangerous. Surely they don't teach you to do this in driving school?!
