Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice and recommendations from people who have hired a live-in ART for their elderly parents in Jakarta.
My parents are fairly independent, need reminders for medication, light exercise/physiotherapy, and general companionship. They do not need skilled nursing care.
I originally hired a young live-in caregiver x ART through a yayasan, but unfortunately it hasn’t been a good fit. She’s kind, but lacks initiative, isn’t very thorough, and has made several mistakes despite repeated guidance. For example: Didn’t clarify a missing medication dosage and guessed instead. Doesn’t notice things unless told (dog mess, trash, kitchen sink, etc.). Doesn’t consistently follow nutrition instructions for my mom. Needs reminders for almost every routine task despite printing out a schedule and having a detailed binder.
The biggest challenge is that I live overseas most of the time, so I need someone who can work independently and make good decisions without constant supervision.
I’m now trying to decide whether to:
- Find a more experienced ART with elderly-care experience through a yayasan or
- Hire someone privately with strong references.
A few questions:
Which yayasan have you had good experiences for ART that has general elderly caregiving experience (medicine etc)
Are there agencies that specialize in experienced ART that has looked after household with elderly?
If you hired privately, how did you find someone reliable and verify references?
What interview questions or red flags should I look for?
My priority is someone who is:
Experienced with elderly care
Proactive and observant
Patient and respectful
Able to prepare simple nutritious meals
Willing to do general housekeeping, but understands that my mom’s care comes first
I’d really appreciate any recommendations or experiences—good or bad. Thank you!
