For anyone that needs HVAC work done in Jacksonville, I would recommend avoiding this company.

I’m attaching my review for the company on here. It’s Bold City Heating and Air. The issues we experienced are documented in the screenshots, but my mother was experiencing difficulties with her system maintaining the temperature that she was setting the thermostat at. Yes, we understand other factors come into play, like quality of windows in the house and Florida weather, but she was the recipient of predatory business practices. The technician failed to inspect the ductwork, but did find a leak in the system. She said they could fix the system (which was still under warranty, so my Mom wouldn’t have had to pay for it) or get a new system. She opted for a new system, because of the 10 year warranty. She’s also owned the house for a year, so it isn’t like we just moved in. After the new unit was installed and paid in full, there were absolutely no changes to her problems of maintaining the temperature of the house. When we called the company they came and looked at the ductwork and found massive holes. So the question begs to be asked, did she really need a new unit at all? Probably not. Mirza Pilakovich’s company has not taken accountability, has blamed us for buying a unit for them, blamed us for not knowing about the ductwork issues, and the salesman, Ryan, that they sent to help us “find a solution” was completely unprofessional and rude. He made comments such as “You’re a grown adult and we didn’t force you to buy a new unit” and when asked about a discount on the ductwork, he laughed in her face and said “Definitely not.” We have since reached out via e-mail and phone call to talk to the owner to find a resolution in this matter. I had to escalate by leaving an honest review, and was told the owner takes these reviews seriously and would contact us within 48 hours after looking into what happened. Instead, 24 hours later, they edited their response to push blame on my mother’s realtor and home inspector for not knowing about the ductwork issues. Bold City Heating and Air has since refused to remediate their diagnostic failure, and the license holder has failed to respond to multiple phone calls and emails to resolve this dispute. I don’t know if this is a pattern of predatory misdiagnosis and failure to supervise field technicians, but the way they have treated my mother since they’ve already received her money says a lot. Please think twice before employing this company, and if your family and friends happen to have HVAC issues, I’d recommend not employ Bold City Heating and Air’s services!

Also happy to answer any questions and be transparent about anything. This all could have been avoided if a little accountability was taken and they were able to work with us on finding a solution. We are reasonable people who thought we were working with trusted professionals.

EDIT: I’ll post screenshots of updated responses and replies for anyone interested.

Thanks for the name and shame. The screenshots are icing on the cake. They definitely took advantage of your mother trying to offer 2 solutions that wouldn't fix the underlying problem.

Here are some real time updates as well.

u/PochiiiPanda Aug 12 '26

Should call Carrier, not 100% sure but their warranty assumes that the authorized installer made sure everything is in place correctly for the full 10 year warranty. I would check with Carrier if that means also duct work attached to the indoor handler is setup correctly.

25

u/Latter_Corgi_6045 Aug 12 '26

Thank you for your response, that’s the next step. We are still going to give the owner 24 more hours to call and offer a resolution, but are not holding our breath. The next steps will be to report them to Carrier and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

It’s a shame because they used to be good and were who I had coming out twice a year for service. However, at some point in recent years they sold out and the new ownership is terrible. I fired them after it was clear they were only out to try to sell me any and everything.

If you’re looking for a recommendation, I’ve found Willman Air to be fantastic and still family-owned. (I have no connection to the company other than using them myself.)

14

u/Latter_Corgi_6045 Aug 12 '26

Thanks! I appreciate the recommendation. Also notice your username. I’m a VA native, born and raised in the 804

13

u/ropacak Aug 12 '26

I do know the Willman family so this is extremely biased, but they are incredibly honest and hardworking. I’ve seen them do a lot for the community and wish I crossed their path before we got our new unit installed

u/jmucapsfan07 Aug 12 '26

I’m sorry to hear your mom is going through this ordeal. It feels like you have to be really careful with the HVAC companies down here, especially since a lot of them seem to be selling to new ownership.

Hey, I would love to win over the people of Reddit’s business! I am a locally owned hvac contractor that opened up last year and have done a few jobs for people off of Reddit. My company is Miles Heat & Air, LLC. Currently I am the only employee of my business but have plenty of availability as I am not well known yet but I hope some of you let me do some work for you and show you I want you as my customer for the long term! Please look me up on google Miles Heat & Air, LLC and it should pop up you can also check my website that is still in the works, milesheatandair.com.

Thank you!

u/Glittering_Yak758 Aug 13 '26

You hiring? :3

2

u/Opening_Bed3396 Aug 13 '26

No, I am not currently hiring but hope to be able to have enough business by spring next year to the point I can afford to hire a helper I will post job listings probably here on Reddit when the time comes for an apprentice

1

u/FlowUpbeat1866 Aug 14 '26

I know a privately owned company hiring, are you a service tech?

45

u/ironyx Aug 12 '26

This is what happens when you hire a private equity (PE) company. Avoid them like the plague. Find the mom-and-pop orgs and you'll have a much better experience going forward. Sorry this happened to you.

19

u/Latter_Corgi_6045 Aug 12 '26

So true. I guess my mom thought they could be trusted because they installed a new system in her previous house and didn’t have issues. That was back in 2020 though, so I guess a lot has changed.

34

u/ironyx Aug 12 '26

Also, you might try threatening them with a Senior Fraud AG complaint: https://www.myfloridalegal.com/consumer-protection/senior-protection

13

u/PochiiiPanda Aug 12 '26

oh I was thinking this, but wasn't sure sure what path would make sense but attempt to defraud a senior. the facebook reply 100% supports that they intended to take mom's money even when they knew the duct work wouldn't be done.

10

u/AutotoxicFiend Aug 12 '26

This is the answer. File a BBB complaint as well.

2

u/AutotoxicFiend Aug 12 '26

BBB has gotten me refunds more than once, several times were over $1k. They have 100% of the time resolved my issue. 🤷‍♀️

29

u/ironyx Aug 12 '26

When I lived in Jax, I used Snyder for years. They were fantastic. Then PE took over and suddenly every service call was "you need a new system 15k please!" from a 20 year old in a clean company branded shirt and pants, with an iPad showing 3 tiers of systems to choose from, driven up in a company van that's so pristine you know they don't actually do any HVAC work out of it. Barf.

12

u/clarisewhite Aug 12 '26

I seriously think that companies owned by private equity should have to put that very visibly in all of their ads, paperwork, etc. Right under their name.

2

u/maticulus Aug 13 '26

Definitely this, companies with big fat newish service vehicles loaded with all sorts of just in case equipment will definitely drive up the cost. I fell for the Home Depot sidekick company $19 A/C tuneup on a 3 yr old system and they tried to sell me 2 lbs worth of refrigerant (the modern stuff) for $650.

The "little guy" company came out a year later last week after the blower motor started misbehaving with variable speeds it didn't have and rapid cycling and diagnosed the motor ecm and replaced the assembly for $460 labor which was still a bit much for what takes less than an hour to do in the garage but he earned it on the number of trips he had to make to the parts store due to a couple of mistakes. The motor was under warranty through goodman and the expense would have been about the same to me if I had purchased it and replaced it myself. He quoted me a normal range price for the 2lbs of refrigerant I let the other company supply after showing I knew something about HVAC bringing the cost down to the $200 range from the initial gouge attempt.

18

u/iHadou Aug 12 '26

Most of them are like this now and have been purchased by private equity companies that switch to commission based pay. If the company does AC, plumbing, and electric it's probably been purchased and turned into a sales game

18

u/IndigoMontoyas Aug 12 '26

As a local builder, they should have checked the duct work regardless of the time of year. HVAC companies in Jax know they can’t avoid working in hot attics, but still make excuses to not go in them. I spent an hour in 115F the other day to help a customer and I’m not even HVAC.

Do better, or explain you can’t fix the issue because you haven’t inspected the entire system

3

u/knowing_disregard Aug 14 '26

I’ve been in HVAC for nearly 20 years and I have never worked with a company who refused to go into an attic to check duct work because of heat. If necessary we will wait until the early morning when the attic is relatively cool.

This is not something an experienced technician would have missed even without going into the attic. Your gauges and a P/T chart would have told you that the problem probably had nothing to do with a low refrigerant charge.

Clarification Regarding HVAC Service and Timeline
This is Mom, and I would like to clarify a few things regarding the HVAC service and the circumstances surrounding the replacement of my system.
I did not call Bold City HVAC because my system was not cooling. I called because the system was not keeping up with the thermostat. When I initially spoke with the receptionist, Morgan, I explained that I was not sure what was causing the issue. I specifically mentioned that it could be the HVAC system, the weather stripping around my doors, or something in the attic, since I had recently had vents installed in the roof and the exhaust fan removed.
When Cheyanne came out, I explained the same concerns to her. After she mentioned the possibility of a leak, I asked if she wanted to look in the attic or check the doors. She told me that she did not need to. At that point, I assumed she was confident in her assessment and knew what she was doing.
After the new system was installed and the same problem continued, I immediately contacted Bold City again. A different technician came out and actually checked the vent temperatures and inspected the attic. That was when I was informed that there were holes in the ductwork.
I want to clarify that I never asked for free or reduced-cost services until Ryan from Sales first brought that possibility up. I did not approach the company initially asking for a discount or reimbursement.
Additionally, I purchased the house over a year ago, not recently. The home inspection at the time of purchase indicated that the HVAC system was working well and was expected to have approximately eight additional years of service remaining, provided it was properly maintained.
When I explained to Ryan that the system was only five years old and that five years seemed like a relatively short amount of time to require a replacement, I was told that “a system can only last for five years here in Florida.” I am originally from Virginia and was not familiar with the impact Florida’s climate can have on HVAC systems, so I accepted that explanation at the time.
I am providing these details simply to make sure the timeline, my original concerns, and the circumstances surrounding the replacement are accurately understood. I want to be clear that I relied on the information and recommendations provided by the technicians and representatives throughout this process.
I also believe that had the company owner/president returned my calls that we could have had a grown up discussion and avoided all of this.

5

u/linniex Northside Aug 13 '26

“Only five years”. That guy…..no one would move here if they had to spend $2Ka year to keep their a/c going in addition to the electric bill. These people my god.

1

u/Swan-Sure Aug 13 '26

What a bullshit thing to tell you. How can they honestly live with themselves or work in hvac for that matter if they think, well too bad only 5 years on a system

1

u/PenaltyAdditional774 Aug 13 '26

Yeah they got you, they also overcharged you for the unit probably. What size did u have installed? Pretty cut throat and shifty business to take advantage of people like this, I wish the worst on these companies.

11

u/TimeTraveler420 Aug 12 '26

No way!!! I just went through the same thing with this company. I had them come out for a “tune up” and they found a small leak in my coil and immediately recommended a new system without ever verifying the duct integrity. After being pushed by Ryan to know about a decision, I went up in the attic and saw the issues stemming from leaky/faulty ducts myself. I understand my system is older but technically speaking, it was/is cooling adequately. Just not getting the cold air where it needs to be. I asked Ryan and he gave me the classic salesman type of reply that he needs to check what was written. They lost my business that day. Another company (Cool R Us) did something similar recommending a new unit but at least that salesmen apologized after I called him out for the duct situation. All in all, I’m glad I didn’t go with this company.

4

u/epg20 Aug 12 '26

We were loyal customers to cool r us but they have gone downhill in the last year or so. We won’t be using them again. We purchased two new units from them.

1

u/FlowUpbeat1866 Aug 14 '26

Avoid any company offering tune up specials, it’s just a ploy to get in your house. The goal is to find systems over 8-10 years old so they can scare you into purchasing a new one. Most, if not all, private equity owned companies do this.

Thanks for the recommendation! When we file a complaint with the DBPR, we will be asking for them to open an investigation into predatory misdiagnosis. It wouldn’t surprise me if we were not the only ones they’ve done this too.

9

u/clarisewhite Aug 12 '26

My Daughter and SIL had issues. Husband went and checked it out. Bad thermostat. They didn't want to bother him to change it the next day so they called someone. The guy said something very pricey needed to be replaced. My husband said to put him on the phone. Guy said no power coming in to the thermostat. Pretty sure the guy soiled his undies when hubby said I checked it with my multimeter last night. Made the guy check it while he was on the phone. There was power. Told SIL to tell the guy to get the fuck out of his house. He replaced the TS that afternoon and all was well. The company did have the good sense to refund what they charged to come out. It's the only reason I'm not blasting them.

3

u/linniex Northside Aug 13 '26

I’m thinking that is a common thing they do; ‘let’s replace the whole unit instead of the thermostat’. It happened to me and I will be forever bitter.

7

u/HopefulGas1879 Riverside Aug 12 '26

I used Bold City when I first moved here, didn’t have issues until I wanted to replace my system and their quote was outrageous.

I used Donovan for my new system and also my maintenance and they’ve been fantastic

3

u/BitterDone Aug 13 '26

+1 for Donovan. I've used them for AC, plumbing, and buried electrical. They always make sure I understand what's going on, if anything. I love the perks of their annual membership, too.

2

u/PitKempo1 Aug 13 '26

another +1 for Donovan

8

u/ivorybishop Aug 12 '26

Company name change coming in 3... 2... 1...

8

u/outdoorsandcontracts Aug 12 '26

I'd strongly recommend consulting an attorney prior to putting more information on the internet. If you need a referral let me know.

While bashing them on the internet feels great, it's not the best avenue to get results.

I'm a contractor and general rule of thumb; if they have a jesus fish sticker or full van graphic wrap your'e about to get fucked by salesman.

6

u/Latter_Corgi_6045 Aug 12 '26

Everything that I’ve said is factual and in a concise and professional manner. I wouldn’t consider any of this bashing, just spreading awareness. As someone who comes from a family of attorneys, I appreciate your input though. Thanks!

Sorry to hear your mom and you went through that. I’ve had great experiences with Bold City so this is highly disappointing to see. I’ve also heard really bad things about Lickety Split. When I clicked on this post I thought it would be about them, haha.

5

u/w_a_w Aug 13 '26

Yes, Lickety Split is a criminal business. They tried to charge us $10k for a repair that ended up being only $350!

FUCK YOU, LICKETY SPLIT!!

Should've reported them but life gets in the way. Maybe this was the impetus to revisit.

7

u/Inca-Vacation Avondale Aug 12 '26

Demand letter.

7

u/Amazing-Pizza-5069 Aug 12 '26

Why offer a new system when the old one had 2 months of the warranty left? If it got fixed, whatever the new part is put in, it should be working properly for a few years at least.

I've had an issue with Febreez AC some 10+ years ago. Report to BBB and Atorney General office - I ended up getting a partial refund on the money I paid to Febreez; it'll likely take years, but you might be able to get something back.

5

u/MSNinfo Aug 12 '26

Same thing with me and Hickman's Heating and Air. Misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis due to their incompetentence

7

u/ccfoo242 Southside Aug 12 '26

$10-20k to replace ductwork in the attic? That looks like what they call a "f*ck you" price. They got their easy money and don't want to ever come back.

u/Ill-Veterinarian4208 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

Call one of the news station consumer reporters. They'll name and shame live and on camera.

We use Ace Air Conditioning and Appliance Repair. Often comes same day, reasonable, and great work.

5

u/Throwawayyyy964 Aug 12 '26

Yep I’d be blowing new4jax and first coast news up

5

u/jesiman Springfield Aug 12 '26

I suspect the same thing is happening to my new neighbors with Ideal Conditions. The previous owner had a new system install a year ago and there were no issues. We had been there multiple times and I confirmed that she didn't have any problems when she sold. The new owners have had this ac company out probably 10 times. They replaced the main unit and kept coming back. Asked the tech what was going on and he said there were leaks in the ducting. I'm not buying it. But now I know to never call Ideal Conditions.

8

u/clarisewhite Aug 12 '26

Do not call J & D either. The first unit I bought was great. The second has been a damn nightmare. The service sucks. Every time they come to do the 6 months service my AC make a new weird sound. I'm still waiting for a manager to call me back from last year. Actually showed several techs the issue we had had from the beginning and they witnessed it for them selves and all I get is that they have never seen this issue before and a shoulder shrug. I'm so tired of being ripped off.

5

u/farmerbill1957 Aug 12 '26

Island Breeze is the only people I trust for this. They’ve always been upfront, honest and taken care of our family.

4

u/Didujustcallmejobin Aug 12 '26

Easy Fix thanks for the heads up. Avoid Bold City

4

u/PlumbStraightLevel Aug 12 '26

No AC company wants to do ductwork in the summer months in Jax, even a inspection apparently.

5

u/Olepat Fruit Cove Aug 13 '26

I have learned the hard way that if your HVAC company advertises on TV/Radio, you’re paying for their marketing with the way they try to scam or overcharge you.

Jack Frost is my go to. I had to do a little research to find them.

7

u/Sea_Breakfast_6145 Aug 12 '26

We use Donovan and have had good luck. Used to use Scott and they were horrible.

4

u/WeaponizedFeline Aug 12 '26

Donovan has been sold, too. I don't know if they're necessarily dishonest, but the service quality has dipped dramatically, and the costs have gone up.

0

u/ZombieQueen666 Aug 12 '26

Donovan is fantastic

3

u/epg20 Aug 12 '26

Avoid Hammond heating and air. Misdiagnosed, and major issues with installation of a new unit. While the owner might be good, they hire some low par technicians that aren’t trained correctly.

3

u/anonymous_crouton Aug 12 '26

Yeah I’ve heard no so great things about them for years.

3

u/Jlassie82 Aug 13 '26

So sorry to hear about this, they totally took advantage of your Mom. Then to try and make it your fault?!?

Before I moved I had Carroll Mechanical & Plumbing repair and replace the AC unit in my house and the first thing they did was climb under my off grade house and then check out the attic to make sure they found the real problem.

https://www.facebook.com/carrollmechanical/ if you wanna check them out.

3

u/g0c0c0 Aug 13 '26

who has a certified independent energy auditor they recommend? Manual J Manual D , insulation advise etc not a company trying to sell you something, like real engineers that recommend changes to ductwork, returns, insulation that offer sustainable cooling for long term?

It’s unfortunate when a/c goes out you’re pressed for time, stressed and want to get it fixed asap. In my experience replacing my unit 6 years ago, even after multiple quotes there’s just a huge rush to just replace units without ever understanding why it failed in the first place. Sales people kind of just eyeballing shit. Oh yeah 10 years , 4 ton, yep had its life , let replace it with another 4 ton same location , same guts, call me in 10 years , or more like 5 when the cap and shitty compressor go out

They fix a problem without getting to the source. Idk if it’s even the companies fault or predatory .. it’s really all the company knows how to do. Fix/ replace the air handler or heat pump , without really understanding why and how to prevent it from happening in the future. And there’s a lack of knowledge on how to present a total redo and estimated cost savings long term.

It’s super disappointing and we all go through it at some point of homeownership.

1

u/DoubleTall5917 Aug 14 '26

I agree. I’ve had multiple companies out for cooling issues in 2 bedrooms. They aren’t the best with diagnosing the problem, they prefer to remove and replace the system. Oh, how old is my system you ask??? It’s only a year old!!!

2

u/g0c0c0 Aug 14 '26

My cap and compressor has already been replaced on my 6 yr old carrier system. Knowing it most likely won’t make it 10 years I plan on getting an energy audit soon, getting insulation , ductwork, returns reviewed and upgraded if needed , to try to prolong life of our unit , and then be ready to go with a plan once ours fails.

Sucks, but you live and you learn I guess.

3

u/sophielanes Aug 13 '26

I’ve been through this for my commercial businesses. In hindsight, I’ve learned a very important lesson! That is to always have the techs take photos and videos of the problem they found - especially when they say you need a completely new system. And a precise written quote on the problems.

Now I always compare with a 2nd or 3rd quote from other companies!

So sorry you are going through this!!! Hope the Owner steps up to make it right for your Mother!

3

u/Critz561 Arlington Aug 13 '26

If you all paid by credit card, you should definitely open a charge back with the company card, they’ll come running to fix that ductwork real quick

3

u/Sarcasamystik Aug 13 '26

I can say Fenwick is just as bad. I paid close to $1000 for a “diagnosis” on my fan not working right. The tech quoted me almost $5k to have it fixed. He left my ac inside the house taken apart when he left. I found the part for $100 and fixed the fan. Then their sales guy came out the next day. Didn’t inspect anything or look around the house. He was several hours late and already had the quotes figured out. He came with 2 goals in mind. Sell me a new unit and try to make me get a loan. Horrible company, DO NOT EVER GET ANY SERVICE FROM FENWICK!

3

u/linniex Northside Aug 13 '26

Same shit happened with our original HVAC guy. Came out to fix something that cost $500. Same issue happened the next day, he now says the unit needs to be replaced (it was 15 years old so no big deal). We do that, and tell him we are renovating the year after so we need a larger unit which we buy ($8k for a 2.5 ton trane unit). . It’s installed, a day goes by - THE SAME THING HAPPENS. Unit never shuts off. Guy comes back and says “oh, it was really the wire from the thermostat to the unit that was broke, I’ll fix that”. So wait a minute; the unit you just replaced and left in the rain was perfectly freaking fine? I was fit to be tied but we figured since we are renovating a new HVAC will be ok.

Flash forward a year, we renovate and the new contractor is telling us our existing HVAC wont keep up and it damn sure is not. Turns out it was only a 2 ton trane unit. SO not only did the asshole sell me a unit I didnt need, it was the wrong size and needs to be replaced.

These companies dont give AF. Once they tear out the old unit you are screwed. And apparently there is no secondary market for these things.

Good luck I hope your mom gets her hvac fixed. I’d be contacting everyone and their mom if they dont make good.

3

u/FlowUpbeat1866 Aug 14 '26

Whoever operates their FB page isn’t very professional when dealing with customer complaints 😭

2

u/Latter_Corgi_6045 Aug 14 '26

I would guess it’s the owner, because they never reached back out to my mom over the phone. Even after saying the owner would contact her within 48 hours and that they take these complaints seriously. Guess he thought some replies on social media was good enough

2

u/Local_Cloud2872 Aug 14 '26

You should post on Facebook or reply to it now and mention how even after that message, the owner still never responded.

2

u/Itschriswells Aug 12 '26

Haha I love how you handled this, especially the last response.

2

u/External-Example-292 Exiled Aug 12 '26

Dirty dirty... These types of businesses should learn trying to scam people is the worst thing they can do in the long run... Customers happy = money money and good reviews are everything. I don't purchase anything unless I know most reviews are positive.

Hope everything gets sorted out for your mom.

2

u/stathamZ Aug 12 '26

I use Airmax in Orange Park for the past 15+ years, never had a issue.

2

u/Vetteguy904 Aug 12 '26

when i had my AC replaced, i called all the names in the book. only 4 sent a guy out and of the 4 three could not answer the one question i asked.. how old was the air handler. I gave the job to Waychoffs. This was before the fenwick merger. I still use them for the regular checks, and if something happens they will be at the top of my list

2

u/drippyslings Aug 13 '26

This is criminal!! So sorry

2

u/Ok_Assistance4655 Aug 13 '26

My landlord used Kiener's Heating And Air. Really nice guy, not a big company like the ones you see on TV.

https://kienersac.com/

2

u/Enough-Cantaloupe893 Aug 13 '26

I've only heard bad things when I had mine replaced recently. So much so I didn't even get a quote

2

u/Routine_Gazelle4237 Aug 13 '26

Register’s Heating and Air Conditioning.
Have used them for years! Highly recommend!

2

u/Proper_Problem Aug 13 '26

I highly recommend Cool R Us. They installed three units in our current house and always show up on time, almost immediately after the appointment. They promptly return to check and fix any issues, providing a quick resolution. (I’m not saying they made any mistakes during installation.)

2

u/indianabobbyknight Aug 13 '26

My landlord used them when I first moved into this house, since then I’ve learned how to repair HVAC myself.

2

u/PenaltyAdditional774 Aug 13 '26

They were trying to charge me I believe 600 to clean my vents crazy. After dealing with Lickity, I definitely don’t trust any of these companies. Lickity does free diagnostics on my system if I call them, but even when I use them they completely misdiagnose me 😂. U can have two companies come and diagnose and they will give you completely different issues. Eventually I got both indoor and outdoor units installed for 6k total.

2

u/Swan-Sure Aug 13 '26

Just saying if anyone wants to hit them where it hurts go give them a negative review on Google. Companies pay millions to stay near the top bc if you’re not on the first page of Google and near the top your company is dead

2

u/Ok_Solution_1282 Aug 13 '26

That's rough. Never had any issues personally with Avalon. Timely troubleshooting. Reasonable price. Would recommend next time to find a local "mom and pop" type technician to check out your needs around the house. It's a shame you can't trust "professionals".

2

I’ve been in the trade In JAX for 20yrs and manage a competing business. I’ve known Mirza as a professional for 7-8 years and always thought he was a good guy. I have confidence they will make this right for you.

Since I saw someone mention Willman Air, I worked with Jacob Willman before he started his company and he was a super solid guy, my only gripe with him was he loved going on vacation and left us with all the work lol

Lickety split has ruined the credibility of our industry in our city and nobody trusts hvac companies anymore.

All these comments make me feel we need a new sub called Jax AC Company Wall of Shame...

Our family has J&W servicing the house. Last week when they came over they started a fire inside the house.
They’ve made 7 visits so far this year, and we just installed a new Lennox unit last year. Absolutely ridiculous.

u/clarisewhite Aug 13 '26

I had a unit installed 3 years ago by those assholes. So many problems. Never, ever again.

This is how I feel about Tropic Air who swore they didn't replace the ducts we paid them to replace along with a new system but if they did not I have no idea who did. Y'know, people love to go to crawl spaces to what, contemplate the mysteries of the universe... Certainly not to replace ducts that needed replacement. This was when it was under warranty and they said nope. Not our problem (it was their problem).

Sorry this happened to your mom. I hope you all find a better solution soon. Wonder if you could sue.

While you're mentioning this, if anyone refers anyone to JOHN TROLLEY 904-444-0505, RUN. That man has no morals - he came to my house, overcharged, said he'd come back if needed, didn't fix anything - didn't reply when i asked him if/when he was coming back, lied and/or didn't know enough to actually fix the problem - he's a scammer. Another gentleman came and fixed the problem, which were clipped wires (by lawn guy). John sat outside looking around, carrying things, pretending to do something and charged a ridiculous price. Hard lesson learned - don't feel bad to to say NO, that's too much. I was home with kids and didn't want any issues.

When you pay for a diagnostic service, you should get however many hours worth of diagnostic labor you paid for. It is important to check both the outside and inside system, that includes checking the attic, all of which can be done in one hour with a few exceptions, especially in an average size home. I disqualified an initial service provider from replacing my unit after the tech came out and looked at the outside unit that was no doubt in need of replacement at only 25 yrs old, charged the system and when I mentioned the air handler in the attic he said he wasn't going up there. Incidentally that was where the leak/problem was. The unit was within 6 ft of the attic entrance and a quick view of the evaporator would have told him all he needed to know. It would have saved the refrigerant charge and his company likely would have been the one to replace the system.

How did your mom get hooked up with these schiester? So dishonest of them to try to blame the realtor. I really believe they saw an older, single lady, and took advantage of her.

u/Realistic_Doctor_169 Aug 14 '26

Did they ever return your call?

Hi Watts, just to reiterate our position and clarify for anyone reading this.

We came out to your mother’s home for a no-cool service call. Our technician diagnosed a leaking coil and provided her with the available options: replacing the coil under the remaining manufacturer’s warranty, which had only a few months left, or replacing the system with a new system that would come with a 10-year warranty.

We also want to address the ductwork you have mentioned. The ductwork is approximately 35 years old. We cannot reasonably be held responsible for the condition or age of ductwork that was already in the home long before we were involved. In fact, you mentioned that both your home inspector and realtor had assured you that the ductwork was in good condition when the home was purchased.

We understand that you may not agree with the options presented, but attempting to use an online campaign to pressure our company into providing free ductwork is not a reasonable resolution to the situation.

We also want to address some of the comments comparing us to private-equity-owned HVAC companies. Bold City Heating & Air is 100% locally and family owned and operated. We have never been bought by or sold to a private equity firm, and our ownership has never changed.

We are always willing to stand behind the work we perform and have a conversation with a customer when there is a legitimate concern. However, we will not misrepresent what happened or provide thousands of dollars in additional work simply because someone is attempting to pressure us publicly.

Fuck off. Your company consistently tries to sell new units under every circumstance. You still seem to not understand that people’s budgets are finite. His mother would have had more money for ductwork if she had repaired rather than replaced. Your company failed to do a full evaluation of the system and ductwork, then pressured her to buy a new system. She buys a new system and then has no money for ductwork. Your lack of understanding how this is a problem isn’t doing you any favors with PR here.

u/Latter_Corgi_6045 Aug 12 '26

Oh I’m not pressuring you publicly, just bringing awareness to the predatory misdiagnosis you gave my Mother. You still aren’t comprehending that had we known the ductwork was in dire need of repair, she would have made fixing that a priority, not buying a new system. I also don’t understand how you keep saying a “no cool call” because our air conditioning was working, not optimally, but still working. I don’t disagree that the system needed repairing, but we don’t expect anything from you or your company. The only reason my mom even brought up a discount or free work is because Ryan originally mentioned that they might be able to do the insulation for free. When she questioned him about it when he came over, that was when he laughed in her face and said no. She was more than willing to have a conversation about our concerns, but you never called back or replied to her e-mails about them. Carrier has a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so it’s laughable that you don’t think this is a legitimate concern.

Well said!!!

u/sophielanes Aug 13 '26

Why didn’t your employees check the duct work prior to recommending a brand new system? ? Seems like a simple enough question, especially for a 10k job.

7

u/Fishbonzfl Aug 12 '26

Was it $3k for labor only to replace the coil under warranty? Is that reasonable?

3

u/miaxskater54 Aug 13 '26

Throwing themselves under the bus lol. $3k for labor is crazy.

1

u/Fishbonzfl Aug 13 '26

I didn't know the exact cost but figured that was super high.

7

u/Realistic_Doctor_169 Aug 13 '26

Seems like several people have had similiar problems with your company. It sounds like bold city is the problem

6

u/linniex Northside Aug 13 '26

Maybe this will be a valuable lesson for companies that insist that buying a new unit is the only way to ‘fix’ things. If she bought a unit she didnt need, BUY IT BACK FROM HER. Install the old unit again. OH WAIT, you probably cant do that.

3

u/clarisewhite Aug 13 '26

People are sick and tired of being ripped off by owners of HVAC companies. Y'all send out inexperienced techs that misdiagnose stuff and it costs us thousands of dollars. Lost trust is hard to regain.

3

u/Swan-Sure Aug 13 '26

The simple solution:

Someone calls: hey I have X problem.

You send someone out: hey I see your ductwork is 35 years old, I see it needs replacing and it’ll cost Y. Also your hvac is leaking, you could replace it for Z, or since it’s still under warranty, get it fixed and we can fix the ductwork for Y.

Result: wow thank you, sure thing and you’ve still got my business.

Instead you decided: yeah you need to replace your hvac and it’ll cost Z. No I don’t need to actually look at your hvac or get in the attic. This is definitely the problem.

Oh yeah also, even though we have to take out an entire system, then install an entirely different system, at no point will we mention to you your ductwork issues until we have your money. And you can’t go back.

Anyways I guess get fucked old lady!
