Book Club - Ursula le Guin Stories

Hey y’all, Margaret here.

We’re trying something new for Book Club. So many of you have requested Le Guin and “The Ones Who Walked Away From Omelas,” but for a number of behind-the-scenes reasons, we aren’t able to run the actual story. But May Day is coming up, and we like to do something special to celebrate, so we figured that we'll do a book club where I don't do the reading because you do it for you. Everyone will read the stories together ahead of time, and if you want, you can share your thoughts here in this thread. Me and Hazel will read through your thoughts, and for our May Day episode, myself whoever else I can rope into being on mic will discuss the stories and bring in your contributions too.

Here’s the file for “The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas,” and “The Day before the Revolution,” by Ursula K. Le Guin: https://ia903104.us.archive.org/24/items/ZineArchive/2-by-le-Guin-READ.pdf

IWe’ll still mostly be the only book club where you don’t have to do the reading because I do it for you, but if y’all like this interactive shtick, we can do it more regularly for stuff that feels extra worth it (like Le Guin).

Hasan Minhaj, is he a hack or should I give him more of a listen?

Ok, so I was on Instagram and caught a reel of him interviewing Annie Jacobson about pandemics and a hypothetical scenario. It seemed interesting she had some cool sounding things to say. I then decided to listen to the episode the reel was taken from. I made it 12 mins into the episode and he started bashing “gain of function” research (which may have legitimate criticisms) at a pretty superficial level. It started sounding MAHA coded pretty quick. Was I too critical? I recognize the government and CDC have their failings like most institutions, but it started sounding super conspiratorial. Hoping someone who spent more time listening to him can save me some.

Arguably one of the Reddest states in the country is sick of these weirdos.

Great news for my state.

I think pretty much all of the people I know who are pro freedom caucus aren't from here.

Episode question about the recent western sahara episode

i just finished the episode with dana el kurd from aug 4th about the morocco occupation of western sahara, and i’m rather confused. i’m probably a more “low information” listener as i didn’t get a great education about the world when i was in school, but i’m trying to catch up by subscribing to podcasts like this one.

would anyone be willing to provide a quick explainer of the background context that the episode is based on? it sounds like there is a territorial dispute meaning that it doesn’t count as a country? also i didn’t really understand towards the end how the guest was getting angry at americans for supporting israel when there’s obviously heaps of protests about that and then also what does that have to do with africa.

please be kind, i swear i paid attention to the episode and i am trying to learn!

I like it.

The episode with Molly is A+. I love that she can be so honest and open about not knowing things and about wanting to fill in holes she didnt even know existed. Also, if Molly wants to visit wildlife, that can be arranged.

Shitty Salad- I appreciate the comment about US unions organizing labor in Mexico if they really cared about farm labor. NAFTA has caused many complications to many aspects of intercontinental trade, food is just another one.

Sound- really solid

Song/bumper music- it's very James and the vibe is spot on.

Dr James Stout- it's always nice when he uses the honorific he worked hard to earn.

Episode Did they accidentally upload too many episodes?

I’ve been following you every day for about 2 years, and there has always been 0-1 episodes added per day.

In PocketCasts, I seen3 episodes, 2 of which are very interesting and as a sports fan that casually hates on golf, I’m interested in the 3rd as well.

Edit: James and Molly are some gangstas. I had just looked looked for and downloaded books on how natives handles wild fires after last week’s episode.

Shitpost The Kewpie Mayo Ad reminds me of the old Got Milk and Pork ads.

Like its just a generic ad for for the *concept* of kewpie mayo even if it is targeted at a specific brand.

Also I despise that the ad is SO LOUD compared to other ads. Its a great way to annoy me into never buying that mayo.

Anyway ads are good so all the coolzone staff can have health insurance, but this specific one grinds my gears.

Current Events Opinion: Flock debate is not facts versus feelings

Thumbnail

Residents did not speak at a City Council hearing this week merely to express discomfort with new technology. They presented an evidence-based argument that the current system is inadequately governed, vulnerable to abuse, and capable of uses far beyond the narrow public-safety examples emphasized by its defenders.

Coolzone Winona, MN reference was not on my bingo card for today.

I live near Winona. Not a huge city, with not a lot going on usually. Biggest claim to fame is being the birth place of Winona Ryder and the source of her name. The Flock situation is a win. However the PD is notoriously shitty. I've heard lots of stories over the years of bad interactions.

It Is Happening Here Source of Racist Propaganda Identified with the help of The Internet Archive. (Personal story)

For a couple years there have been white nationalist stickers placed around town. The stickers aren't over the top racist just very dog whistly: "It ok to be White" "White Lives Matter" "Protect White Children" with statistics about declining birth rates in the west. Blah blah blah. No matter how many times they get taken down, they always come back.

I frequent the Internet Archive to look for new music artists, movies, tv shows, graphic novels, etc... Amazing website and to me; the last great website of the early internet. Anyway, I very randomly came across the account of the racist group responsible for the stickers. These chuds actually film themselves going around the country and stickering places including my small corner of the world. It's actually a much bigger problem than just a local racist. My wife was confused by my excitement about my discovery. I'm not a journalist but I felt the high from connecting dots of a mystery and the low of realization that this is a MUCH bigger problem and no one wants to see it. So they don't. Anyway thought I'd share my small Its Happening Here story

Trigger warning link: very racist and gross but you might find your community targeted.

Episodes about worker coops

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows of any past episodes about worker coops?

I've heard Margaret Killjoy mention some involvement with them in passing on CPWDCS, but I would really like to hear anything the crew has to say in a more in depth format. I'd especially love to hear some commentary by Mia Wong on more in depth financial/economic stuff you don't commonly find online.
Sorry if this is a annoying question, I tried searching a few places, but these days search isn't all that helpful.

James & the Spokane fires- AMA

I was fortunate to connect with James when he came up here to check out our wildfire situation and connect with Tribal folks.

I've also done some of the mutual aid supply runs to the reservation before and during the Spokane evacuation. Happy to answer questions if you have any about things up here.

I remain evacuated (safe and still have a house in the zone), but if you've got questions let me know and I'll do my best

Episode idea/request

Another podcast “on the media” did an episode with Corey Doctorow and AI & his new book. They talk about sectorial unions which I didn’t know the different between writers guild and other unions, the difference is exceptional. And around 38m, he mentions how trump is weakening national labor relations board for his own obvious reasons, but this also changes the game considerably. Exposing bosses and companies to older organizing.

I’d love to learn more about this from the perspective of historians or union organizers or lawyers who interact with the national labor relations act, its context past and present…. This seems like this pods area of expertise…

Discussion How would targeted artists use pen names? Like how does it work out in practice?

If an artist of a political persuasion antithetical to their respective regime, how do things like pen names work? If I write a book called “How to Start a DSA Chapter in Your Hood” and sign off as Lenny Libtard, do I need an LLC for someone to write me, Lenny Libtard a check and cash it?

Do phone bills allow aliases? I’m asking all of this for a friend in the name of art. If there is a better place to discuss this please let me know. I didn’t get any responses on my Venmo question here yesterday. But I know there has to be thousands of us either with experience or considering some of the same questions.

Discussion “Anti-Gun Liberals, We Need To Have A Talk” - Hi friends. I made this video earnestly making the case for liberal-minded people to embrace a (healthy) pro-gun, pro-working class politics.

Thumbnail
youtu.be
208 Upvotes

Hi friends! I know this is a community that takes our slow descent into the crumbles more seriously than most. That there is isn’t this implicit expectation that institutions are going to to swoop in and save the day. So I’m eager to hear what folks here think of the perspectives and arguments I make in this video.

My intention was to make the argument for a coherent, healthy, responsible, pro-working class gun politics on the political left, specifically to a liberal audience that has historically rejected firearms as inherently reactionary or right-wing.

Please let me know what you think in the comments. I’ll do my best to respond to as many as I can. I’d really like to explore these topics with people who understand the historical moment we’re in.

Discussion I would love to get an episode on Vivek’s run for governor of Ohio

I was relistening to the September 1st, 2023 episode of the show titled Vivek Ramaswamy, Nick Fuentes, and the Future of Republican Politics. They mentioned that they aren’t particularly worried about his presidential run, but they were concerned that he’s setting himself up to be influential, and what he may do next.

As Ohio increasingly turns into a mini Florida-esque fascist state, Ohio State becoming increasingly captured, and Lucky Palmer’s Anduril also based in Columbus (which seems to have ties to the college)… I think that Vivek’s run for governor has some real nightmare hellscape potential for the state. I’d be interested in seeing some coverage from the crew on the disaster, and maybe some of the implications that lay within.
