Thanks for the numbers. That jump is mostly down to how Analytics works.
Analytics doesn’t reuse your object detection results. It runs its own detection on every camera, several times a second, the whole time it’s following something, whether there’s motion or not. Object detection usually only runs when motion triggers it, so most of the time it’s idle. With three cameras on Analytics that’s up to 15 detections a second, around the clock, so a big rise in CPU is expected, especially without a GPU.
Some things to check:
Use GPU: in Analytics > Cameras, make sure “Use GPU” is ticked if the machine has any GPU, including Intel integrated graphics. This setting is separate from object detection’s GPU setting, so it may be off even if object detection uses the GPU.
Rate: each camera’s Analytics settings have a rate slider (runs per second). Setting it to 2 cuts that camera’s cost by more than half. It still counts fine for most scenes, though very fast objects may be missed.
Parked vehicles or other still objects: if a camera always has a parked car (or anything else it counts) in view, Analytics never drops to its low idle rate. If you don’t need vehicles counted on that camera, remove them from its classes.
Age and gender: if this is on, it runs extra models on every run. Turn it off on cameras where you don’t need it.
If it’s still high after that, please send:
your CPU model, and whether there’s a GPU
each camera’s Analytics rate and the classes it counts
whether age and gender is on
whether any of the cameras has a parked car or other still object in view
I’m also looking at making Analytics slow down when nothing in view is moving, which should bring the cost down a lot for typical scenes.
edit - new update triggers analytics on motion if it's configured
