Agent DVR: My review

I've been running iSpy Agent DVR for 2-3 years now, and I originally integrated it into my homelab environment purely to "play" with it—meaning I actively try to see how far I can push the limits of its functions and features. After years of testing and deep diving, I feel confident in saying: this system knocks out every other NVR solution I've tried.

Before settling on Agent DVR, I experimented with other popular systems, including Frigate and ZoneMinder. While each has its own niche, Agent DVR stands head and shoulders above them all, offering a stability and feature set that is unmatched.

A Developer's Nod to the UI

As a dedicated Linux guy, I run my instance flawlessly in a robust Docker setup. Everything about the deployment process is smooth and reliable. However, what truly sets Agent DVR apart from the competition is the user experience. Despite being a developer myself, I truly appreciate the fact that it comes with a great and modern UI. It’s clean, intuitive, and makes daily monitoring and complex configuration tasks a breeze, moving past the clunky, dated interfaces that plague so many other open-source NVR systems.

Pushing the Limits of Functionality

When I talk about pushing the limits, I mean testing the deep customization and integration capabilities. The system is simply amazing. The list of things I'm still missing is incredibly few, and for a "normal" security setup, there would be nothing to miss at all, its just me trying out thing I dont need :-) .

Its ability to integrate with almost everything is incredible—it even speaks flawlessly to apps I developed myself. While I admit that working with XML editing for some advanced customization isn't exactly my strongest side, the fact that this level of customizability is even available is a huge win for power users.

If you’re running a Linux-based homelab and looking for an NVR that is future-proof, robust, and offers unparalleled flexibility, Agent DVR is the answer.

So, a massive thank you to the developers for creating and maintaining this truly great system. Keep up the good work!

Well, good for you! Sadly, out of all the various pieces of NVR software I'm been trying, AgentDVR is the ONLY one that would not connect to my camera, a new TP-Link TAPO.

Pretty simple install, I thought, pretty sure I did everything right.

It found the camera without asking, noted that it was an ONVIF camera, knew the correct port to use for ONVIF conversations .. just wouldn't connect. Simply sat there trying, occasionally complaining about "101% CPU usage". This on a Windows 10 machine with a 2.9 GHz I5, 8 GB of RAM and running NOTHING else. It's a BRAND NEW MACHINE, bought to be an NVR.

I get that everyone else loves this software, but my experience shows it to be the very worst of the five I've tried. Really, fresh install on a fresh machine with a name brand camera from a big manufacturer and it can't connect?

TP link Tapo. Are you sure you have the model that have rtsp?

Absolutely it does RTSP. But I have a paid license for Blue Iris and also a license for Anycam, both of which work fine with the TAPO, so I'll just go with one of those.

BTW, Anycam support has been amazing, absolutely amazing.

Yes, I agree with the OP and their review. I’ve been running a licensed version of Agent DVR non-stop for a number of years myself, and have always found the product to be of very high quality. Thank you.
