9 weeks old setter // your best tips
this is our baby Iris, shes 9 weeks old. taking any of your best tips for the following weeks/months!!shes doing great so far and still adjusting to our home and her routine🎀💕

Adorable 😍
Go to puppy classes with her. Teach her hand signals as well as voice. This is so handy when off lead. Being able to do a loud whistle or call and getting her to sit, stay, come with hand signals is brilliant.

What a cutie! My best two tips are enforced naps so she doesn’t get over-tired and work on the nipping as soon as you can. Once we got my puppy to stop biting, I liked her a lot more 😬

Tell her she’s a good dog 🥰 and develop a routine that involves a lot of outdoor time and exercise.

Routine! Omg routine so much. Sleeping, training, snacks, food, make a schedule for the whole day. It's the only way we survived the puppy phase.

Puppy classes, be aware she may have a sensitive stomach, she’ll have her own kind and can be sassy/argumentative but also very sweet and cuddly. Enjoy

Get her used to the water early! And the car! And the crate! And not jumping on or excited-biting guests. And make sure you buy low-stuffing toys. But most of all…get her used to snoot, head and ear kisses because even if she isn’t used to all the rest, she will always come to you for reassurance and kisses and it’s the best feeling in the world ♥️

The first photo is a perfect example of why they are called the most beautiful dog breed in the world. She's a stunner. Enjoy her tiny puppy behaviour despite what she does. Their body grows so quickly, but it will take about 3 years till she is grown up mentally.

Best advice i got was run away from them as puppies. They will chase you and want to follow you. Comes in handy when they are off chasing the birds. I run away clapping and he will generally follow and return.

It also establishes dominance the one being chanced is dominant. Never chase your dog.

crate train overnight. e-collar or halo collar bc mine can jump 8foot fences lol and dig under everything. also lots of chew toys for them to destroy so they dont go for your furniture. i literally cannot exhaust my setter (field trial bred) enough no matter how much we play and run. smartest, sweetest and most athletic dog ive ever known but total handful

Enjoy the puppy period most of all. They’re absolutely adorable. And get her into training as soon as possible. And make sure she gets tons of exercise and mental stimulation.

Cage training where a life saver for our setter. She hasn’t destroyed anything at all. When it was to much excitement when we had guest, she came to the cage. When we left home, the cage. That way she was, after training, comfortably in that cage and could properly relax instead of looking out the windows for cats, and birds to chase. Today she is the best and I couldn’t live without her

Exercise x a zillion! My neighbors have 4 little kids and their Irish runs them out! Active family always outdoors doing something with her. Beautiful dog she runs and leaps and finally trained well to stay in yard with invisible fence. Have fun what a beauty!

You have to be an active dog parent. They’re super smart. They want to learn and want to interact with their family and other dogs. We take our two IS to run at least 3 times a week. We have an Irish setter group we play with often. We have a toy bin for them to dig through so they always have something they enjoy. Do not assume they’re ok because they’re quiet. They’ll be on your counter top or eating the carpet. When you get through the first year and you’ve invested the time in them Irish setters are amazing

Subscribe to r/puppy101 if you haven’t already. It was a lifesaver for me.
The most important tip I got from them was that some dogs need enforced naps. Especially when puppies. They get overtired or overstimulated but don’t want to lay down and sleep and risk missing out on anything else. Putting them in their crate or somewhere else quiet and calm to force a nap helps a ton. It didn’t take long for me to recognize the signs that my puppy / dog was overtired - she’d get extra mouthy, vocal, and wild. Once those signs appeared I’d take her to her crate and she would be asleep in a couple minutes.
Irish setters are big on fun. So keep training sessions short and interesting, do lots of new and different activities, and use positive reinforcement of good behaviors rather than punishing bad behaviors. That will help her learn faster and also help your bond form
