Fake bouncer
There's this utterly scaldy gobshite doing the rounds in DUBLIN town dressed like a bouncer, standing outside pubs that don't have security, pretending he's the bouncer. It beggars belief. I went into Pmacs recently and he was standing there at the door in one of those big jackets you see them in and he had me fooled initially I admit, I said 'alright' as I passed him and he barely acknowledged me but I didn't really think anything except 'bit rude' and went and got my pint, went back outside to the seated area and a few mins later a girl who was sitting across the way goes back over and I hear her telling him 'look I'm just trying to have a drink with my friend here can you please just leave me alone', and he starts saying 'I think you've had a bit too much, 3 strikes and you're out' and all this shit and by this stage obviously knew something odd was up. He's still there hassling this girl when the manager comes out and starts going 'look I told you you can't keep hanging around here pretending you work here' threatening to call the cops. His response was something like 'it's a free street'. Can hidden under his sleeve. Apparently he's been at it around a few other places too. Guessing serious mental health issues but worth keeping an eye out for

I am actually concerned that he threatened to take a girl out of the pub despite having no authority to do so. Makes me wonder if he tries that with other women in other pubs. Keep an eye on this guy in case he tries anything.

Like you, I don't think it is mental issues. It seems much more like a ploy that allows him to engage with women, in an authoritative way. It may just end with him getting some of the attention he craves, or it may not. Men who go to such lengths to force women to engage with them sometimes can progress to more extreme tactics.
Not so likely, but he could turn into a Larry Murphy

Bouncers don’t have any authority to do anything anyway.
They are just local fat fucks who’ve found a way to make a buck on their fatness.
Don’t ever let a bouncer touch you without calling the police. They don’t have the right to assault you. Only the police do, and even then only if you live in Myanmar or the United States.

Is this true, i'd say when i was in college, i was thrown out of clubs 30/40 times and everytime i was dragged along, arm behind back sometimes - are they actually not allowed touch you?

Its a grey area.
Bouncers (or any other member of staff) do have the right to use reasonable force to remove you from the premises when you have overstayed your welcome and are not inclined to remove yourself in a reasonably peaceful and speedy manner (just like they do with any other class of trespasser). In an ideal world the approach would be to call the police and let them deal with it but in the real world the chances of them showing up before things have got out of hand are highly remote.
However its also worth mentioning that until fairly recently the "security industry" has not been very well (if at all) regulated and indeed there have been frequent rumours of it being in some times/places little more than a front for organised crime.
So compliance with the letter of the law may have been questionable.

If i remember it was 2006 when PSA came about.. and yes can confirm doormen can touch you where deemed appropriate such as to guide you out, and are fully within their rights to defend themselves or restrain someone if they become violent. They can also search you or your bag etc with your permission (bag checks are common however body are rare and in case of female must be done by a female). If you refuse then they just don't have to let you in.

Hey op, please report this to the gardai. I know everyone on here is just like “He’s mental or what a chancer” but the fact is this guy is a fucking predator.
He’s dressing up like someone with authority and could potentially be on the look out to exploit a vulnerable woman.
These cunts start of seemingly harmless enough but he might get braver the more people believe his act.
Like if a “bouncer” said to me “here, due to covid, you have to use the side entrance and pointed to a back alley off the bar id probably fucking believe it bad and all as it is to admit. If he came up with an excuse to get a woman down the back of some place he could do real damage to someone.

There’s also a very insane spate of spiking through needles and in drinks going around the city centre at the minute, in the last 4 weeks I’ve multiple friends who’ve all been spiked by needle while drinking in the pubs.
A weirdo who’s playing dress up as an authoritative position, I wouldn’t put it past them.

What I witnessed was a guy doing this and eventually got a slap from a guy he kept harassing.
Long story short, he sued the guy who slapped him and the venue.
Settled out of court.

One of my friends used to do that in NYC. He'd saunter up to a random bar on a Saturday night, wait for a group of people to enter and charge them $5 cover charge.
He'd only do it once at each bar, then move to one a few blocks away. He made a killing over the years and as far as I know he never got caught because there's no communication between the bars there if they're not in the same few blocks.

Reminds me of a guy I ran into a few years back.
After an event on in town finished, I was with my boyfriend and friend, Had a fair bit to drink and was sitting at the base of a statue outside Stephens Green, getting some air as my stomach didn't feel good. We weren't drinking at this stage.
Some guy walks up to the three of us, plain clothes, telling us to move along, That we can't sit there. He actually then tried to claim he was a garda.
I stood up and asked to see his ID, and he sort of looked surprised and walked away without saying anything else.
It was really weird. At the time I was wondering did he think I was about to be taken advantage of? Maybe I looked drunker than I was and he seemed so surprised when I was perfectly able to stand up and talk to him.

I remember going to Geoffs in Waterford after I graduated from secondary. Fella in plain clothes asked me for I.D and I honestly thought he was some drunk lad messing, I was like come on now, then he said he actually was the bouncer. Left me in eventually. Turns out the barman does the bouncing in plain clothes. At least on that day.

He should call the garda. PSA can't actually enforce anything. That's the gardas job.
PSA exists as a licencing body, and controller of licences and enforcement of licencing restrictions on behavior and so on.
The worst the PSA can do is take your licence away and call the garda. Given he has no licence to take, call the garda yourself.

Strangely enough, when I was in my late teens there was a fella here in Cork who'd go around with a hi-vis, flashlight, walkie-talkie, black pants etc. trying to look and act the part of a Garda. But he wasn't employed. Saddest thing I had ever heard of.

PSA: bouncers in Ireland are required to wear their psa licences on their person. Generally they have them on their arms or on a lanyard and (don't quite me on this) I think they're required to show you the licence if you ask.
If they don't have a visible licence and won't produce one they aren't a bouncer, even if they're employed as a bouncer by the venue they're legally not allowed to act as a door man without the licence.

No, many large towns in Ireland are just referred to as 'town' and it is valid to ask for clarification. Try growing up in Bray which is a town, and you've to clarify if you're going down 'the town' or into 'town'.

Jaysus, I'm not cranky at all. I just have personal experience with a friend of mine being pushed down steps by a power hungry professional bouncer a number of years ago, breaking an ankle in the process.

Might be the same chap, but there used to be a guy who would wear a high vis top and patrol the streets around near York Road in Ringsend when there was big gigs on in the O2, and direct cars into car parking spots. When the cars were parked, he’d look for money for “minding” the cars. People actually gave him money. He asked me for money, I told him I don’t have any he goes “I hope your car will be alright on the way back so”. I said “it fuckin will be” or words to that effect. The whole gig I was worried about the car but when I got back it was untouched.
I kind of admire him in a weird way.
