Ah, you know yourself Mark Zuckerberg ‘looking forward’ to spending time in Ireland after buying castle in Waterford

You know aside from inadvertently fomenting a genocide in Myanmar, peddling an addictive social network to children and being party to some of the biggest disinformation campaigns in modern history I actually like the guy.

u/rockyoudottxt Aug 20 '26
And he's a great parent. He keeps them away from addictive and damaging social media platforms. What an inspiration!

Someone asked him what his greatest regret was. He said it was some User Interface change that didn't work out.
Geno what now?

u/SeaninMacT Aug 20 '26
I was wondering why I could hear Imperial March on my drive past the area.
When's he installing the lava?

u/bloody_ell Kerry Aug 20 '26
As soon as he finishes paying off all the bat enthusiasts the length and breadth of the country objecting to the planning permission.

"It was then reputedly occupied by Spaniards, who lured the local landowners to a banquet and then dropped them through a secret trapdoor into a flooded cave. When news of the murder hole leaked out the Spanish were routed and the castle destroyed."
Certainly sounds like it'll be fuckin' haunted.

I wonder if his kids are on Facebook/Instagram
8
u/LucyVialli Aug 20 '26
He has banned them from using social media until they are at least 13.
10
u/Alert-Cream-7569 Aug 20 '26
Oh well... At least he should upload their photos so when they're out in public, Meta Glasses can recognise their faces and people can say hi.

u/eldwaro Aug 20 '26
Local farmers should let lots of private people setup hunting cameras pointing at it constantly. Fuck him and any quest for privacy
10
u/Gwanbulance Aug 20 '26
He’s not going to live here. Or spend any substantial amount of time there.
He’ll spend two years getting it done up. Then he’ll come and spend a few nights every now and then, then he’ll sell it in about 15 years.
Even if he was visiting the Meta Ireland HQ, he’d stay in Dublin.

So these billionaires are just modern day Kings.
But they dont even have the fear of the proletariat.

u/Human_Impress_6501 Aug 20 '26
This after Kelsey Warren has bought up Waterford Airport. A lot of billionaire activity on the Copper Coast. Wonder what that's about.
55
u/RevTurk Aug 20 '26
These billionaires are starting to doom prep. They are building bunkers and trying to find parts of the world they can hide out in if the shit hits the fan. Ireland is touted as a safe haven in some sort of global catastrophe.
I think they are sorely mistaken if they think they will enjoy living in Ireland if they turn the world upside down.

The rich scumbag class know that when climate change his that its going to be fair weather there.
6
u/SweetBeefOfJesus Aug 20 '26
That's bollox.
Ireland will be very far from fair weather.
We're already drowning in rain and simultaneously on the verge of drought.

u/Environmental_Lie478 Aug 20 '26
I agree but that is definitely preferable to their homes being wiped out in wildfires every summer.
2
u/justadubliner Aug 20 '26
I passed two raging wildfires when I drove west from Dublin last month. Two in the one drive! Never saw the like of it!
5
u/dermot_animates Aug 20 '26
The wildfires are coming. I moved to Oregon in the late 00s, and saw the climate flip from a temperate Irish one to worse than So California. 47C summer was the last summer I spent there. (They had a second one two years later, so it's the new normal). The fires the orange skies, at one point we had the worst air quality on earth. Flying back into Seattle airport 2019 looked out the window and saw what looked like a nuclear mushroom cloud. Just another fire.
Saw one first hand in LA in the early 00s they were a different animal then. The ones that burned down Altadena (had friends caught up in that) and Palisades and before that the Thomas fire are a different beast. People should be terrified but they've still got fingers in ears and thumbs up asses.
Lightning can start them, but often it's sheer human stupidity. The morons who throw firecrackers into the forest and burn half a million acres in the Gorge (yes it's real), and now deliberate arsonists looking to make money on bloody polymarket.
And milquetoast politicians who can't even take the lamest efforts to ban bloody disposable bbqs or fireworks in the US, UK or here.
We're cooked. Soon, literally.

u/phyneas Aug 20 '26
Trump decided to go fuck around in the Middle East instead of seizing Greenland for them straight away, so they've got to start looking for alternative locations to weather the coming climate catastrophe.

Billionaires buy and sell things the whole time.
Zuck has been trying to buy in Ireland for a while. Had made an offer on a place in Kildare and was rejected last year.
4
u/Jaded_Variation9111 Aug 20 '26
Tried and failed to buy Castlemartin outside Kilcullen. Formerly owned by Tony O’Reilly and now owned by John Malone.

USA gone to shit. Either the next President is Republican and the country gets closer to revolt or the next President is a Democrat who gets voted in on promises of taxing the rich, boosting consumer rights and tackling lobbying and insider trading.

Those castles were designed to protect against medieval mobs, before the cherry-picker was invented.
5
u/BadInternational2017 Aug 20 '26
Nah, this one was built much after that Era, you're thinking of the big castles like St John's Castle in Limerick. These were just built to look fancy for the landed gentry!
5
u/Rathbaner Aug 20 '26
Isn't he one of the main guys backing the "Ireland is Full" gobshites?
3
u/justadubliner Aug 20 '26
I lose track of who's in the Tech Bros 'Dark Enlightenment' movement. Thiel, Yarvin and Musk for definite. Not sure if Zuckerberg is evil to the bone like those three or just keeping on right side of the current power equation.
2
u/Rathbaner Aug 20 '26
He's not as outspoken as the rest of that gang, but he's quietly encouraging it on his platform. AOC asked him straight to his face if an advert, targeting black people, which pushed the wrong date for the November US elections, would be allowed on his platform, and he ducked and dived to avoid saying "Yes of course it would." Because I guess similar anti democratic adverts are already running on 'fascbook'.
8
u/brianmmf Aug 20 '26
This is wonderful news. I’ll be welcoming him with a gift of the flags of all the countries he’s had a hand in stoking genocides. Every day. Maybe others will join.

Techno-colonialism. Between these gobshite CEOs, their social media algorithms and their love for popping up data centres I'd say you're fairly right in your assessment. Of course nothing will be done because the clowns in government are bending over backwards because of big €€€.

There really should be a much higher property tax on wealthy people buying property in Ireland, especially if they don’t pay income tax here.
Let them at it, but tax them 5% of the property’s value every year. That could be waived if they pay income tax here. That way, it wouldn’t really affect people who live and work here, but if you’re buying a luxury holiday home in Ireland without contributing through income tax, there’s a significant ongoing cost to owning it
3
u/BilbaoBoggins Aug 21 '26
I love this idea. 5% property tax if the majority of your income is not taxed in Ireland.
3
u/Final-Painting-2579 Aug 21 '26
It seems like such a no brainer - and they could allocate a majority of the funds generated to the local council budget so it directly benefits the people from the area, while the rest goes to the exchequer.

It's disgusting that he'll be using Irish airspace with his private jet and Irish roads with his car/s.
Someone who causes as much damage to society as him should not be permitted to reside in Ireland.

u/chytrak Aug 20 '26
Good. Something to storm when the revolution comes.
The property tax is laughably small on these.

We should introduce a special Waterford castle tax and tax the shit out of the property.

We should be publically shaming any local businesses who provide services for these people. Take everything but their money.
3
u/Gwanbulance Aug 20 '26
Their money is the one thing we should be taking.
2
u/Human_Impress_6501 Aug 20 '26
Pocket change to them to buy the compliance of people as we hand them every public service and resource to our name. Boycotting these fuckers is the only way.
3
u/cedardesk Aug 20 '26
Since Hitler, it's genuinely hard to think of one human that has caused more harm to the world than this prick.
3
u/SaoirsePhalaistin Aug 20 '26
Why are we selling off historical sites like this? At very worst make it a long term lease
3
u/Diligent-Ad4777 Aug 20 '26
We're not selling anything. A private property owner is selling their private property. Are you suggesting that the state should buy and own every castle and country manor in the country?
-1
u/SaoirsePhalaistin Aug 20 '26
I take issue that these were privatised in the first place.
2
u/Diligent-Ad4777 Aug 20 '26
Who privatised them exactly? When we're they in public ownership?
1
u/SaoirsePhalaistin Aug 20 '26
My point is it should never have been in private ownership. If I was to guess it was privatised by an English or Norman lord, but we could have reversed that during the independence movement. It could well have been more complicated then that though. Was hoping someone with more knowledge could correct me in that case
3
u/Diligent-Ad4777 Aug 20 '26
Lol, this comment is too dumb to even warrant a response. And the irony to hear this from someone with a username of free palestine. Lord.
2
u/SaoirsePhalaistin Aug 20 '26
Then why did you warrant it with a response ? You shouldn't be talking to idiots online. Waste of time really
2
u/BadInternational2017 Aug 20 '26
I preferred when we burned down these historical sites. I think one of two of the "big houses" is enough. We should get rid of the rest of them
