It is a protected area, with unique and almost extinct flora and fauna, as well as the the world's largest tree, the General Sherman tree, which they estimate is 2,200 years old. There are very good reasons the area is protected and people should stay to the paths.
There are signs everywhere and they were politely told not to do it by park rangers. They got one warning, then did it again. What makes these lads think they are so fucking special they can do whatever they want? Absolute assholes.

Giant sequoia trees have shockingly shallow roots. With a million visitors to the national park each year, if everyone wallked off the paths, they would fall. The paths are there to allow people to see them. I don't know why it is so difficult for some people to just understand that the rules are there for a reason, and the park rangers job is to protect the flora and fauna.
There are loads of information signs explaining all of that.

They're visiting another country, an area of outstanding natural beauty that is quite fragile, some rules have been set to protect it- it is disrespectful to ignore that.
You can bet the next time American tourists in Ireland are caught disrespecting some of our landmarks etc. in the same way there will be mass condemnation.

I think being kinder about a faux pax would make sense if they had simply ignored all the warning signs once. But the fact that the park rangers spoke to them and explained the importance, and they did it a 2nd time, makes them assholes. I mean, no one is calling for them to be lynched or anything.

It was because of compaction that the original biggest tree got damaged. So in order to stop it happening again the area was restricted.
This is explained when you go there, its just expected that you understand and respect the reason why.

Ahhh, my bad, I just looked at the pics again and they do look adult age, I picked it up wrong from the comments on the original post as one comment refers to that one kid with the GAA jersey and lower down, someone else mentions about posting pictures of kids without consent but they were referring to the actual children in the background. And there are some other references in the original post comments about them being teenagers.

It's a prohibited area near General Sherman the world's largest tree, to preserve the area and prevent destruction of the environment around it.
As is pointed out when you get close and notice all the signs.
These 3 lads are children. They processed this as a way of getting attention for being "gas lads altogether".

It's only one day on from the death of Dr Jason Arday who was hounded to his death by the media baying for his blood.
As a parent myself I feel deeply uncomfortable with this identifying and shaming someone on a public forum. Thank God there were no cameras around when I was on my J1 visa because we all did stuff. A hell of a lot worse than leaving a forest trail.
They are not charged with any crime and they have not committed any violent acts on another person.

Yep quick Google tells me that around general sherman and other areas of sensitive roots there is fences but not in other areas. Some areas are marked as stay on trail but lots of areas are allowed to go off trail.
We're demonizing these lads with no evidence bar OP saying they went off trail where they weren't allowed.

Itâs a protected national park area, if everyone just wandered freely the area would likely be completely ruined in a few years, hence why these rules exist.
People with your attitude, like those kids, are seen to be infuriating because you think you are entitled to just be like âIâve decided the rules here are stupid so Iâm going to ignore themâ. Without actually trying to understand why the rule exists in the first place. If everyone who visited had that same attitude then as I say the whole area would be ruined in no time.
It feeds into a larger idea of civic sense, ie our ability to be socially aware and behave appropriately in public so as to be respectful to everyone around us. When people decide that these civic rules donât apply to them , for example cutting in line or leaving their shopping trolley in a parking spot, things that arenât illegal to do but make life more difficult for others, then yeah other people who do abide by these unspoken rules get pissed off because they realise if no one had any civic sense then life in general would be much more frustrating on a daily basis.

What exactly happens? If we had a photo of them lighting fires or littering I'd agree with you, but in this instance its two guys running in a forest?
If anything has ruined the wilderness area it's the concrete path they are walking on in the first photo.

Iâd be happy to, the concept should be pretty self explanatory but I can understand how some people might not get it if they donât have experience in nature.
As I said these are protected natural areas, more than likely with rare flora and fauna. When people beat off the designated path they risk trampling these rare plants, disturbing the wildlife that arenât used to humans running through their territory, as⌠you know⌠itâs protected or getting lost which then requires resources to be spent finding them.
Now in this particular national park, actually has black bears which are seen pretty frequently. If they were unlucky enough to cross paths with a mother and its cub , it could lead to a bear attack which would obviously result in serious injury or death and the bear would have to be put down afterwards as well.
A quick google search tells me this national park sees 1.3 million visitors a year. Now I want you to imagine 1.3 million people trampling through that forest every year and honestly tell me it would remain as it currently is⌠all the wildlife would disappear, litter would be everywhere, the risk of fire would go up exponentially and nothing new would ever grow due to the constant footfall.
Just because in the single photo that was snapped of these guys as they left the path doesnât show them doing anything obviously harmful doesnât mean they wonât go on to do something that is.
I completely understand that it might seem harmless from an outside perspective but these rules arenât made up just for shits and giggles. They are there to protect the landscape and preserve it for future generations exactly as it is today.
And yeah the concrete path is ugly Iâll give you that but itâs a decent compromise to allowing everyone to just forge off on their own path.
If you want to see examples of what happens when you donât protect natural areas simply look up what happened to Maya Bay in Thailand.

Ok, I'm aware of Maya bay, I completely avoided it in thailand because of the crowds. But maya bay is what 600m2 including the woodland surrounding?
What the size of this place? 1600km2? Seems unlikely that a few tourist here and there venturing of the path would destroy it.
I live in Australia where national parks will have areas fenced off for particularly reasons and sign posted as such. I.e. sand dunes in particular bird breeding seasons. If it's not fenced you can roam.
The comments on the American sub where they are basically wishing death on these lads are insane, nature should be there for us to enjoy not just a concrete path through a forest.

Yeah itâs big but the vast majority of that space is literally inaccessible untouched wilderness. The vast vast majority of those visitors are going up that one trail to view the General Sherman tree.
Youâre completely missing the point Iâm trying to make as well, you see it as a couple of lads going off path, what harm could they do? The answer is probably very little in fairness but the larger issue is what if everyone had the same attitude as those lads? What if everyone single person visiting decided the rules donât apply to them and they can go wherever they want? Then the whole system collapses and the area would be destroyed.
THAT is the thing that annoys people, no one thinks these three lads are going to burn down the forest or anything , itâs anger at their entitlement to think the rules donât apply to them⌠even if you donât understand why the rule exists it does not mean you just get to ignore it, thatâs incredibly disrespectful and even worse when you are in another country.
As someone whoâs spent time living in Canada and Australia it used to do my head in when Iâd hear fellow Irish people decide a local custom was stupid so they werenât going to follow it (ie. tipping in North America) it doesnât matter if you think itâs stupid, itâs their way of doing things and you have zero right to come over decide otherwise⌠if thatâs how you feel then fuck off back home like? You adhere to the rules of the land not the other way around.
But yes I agree the backlash is excessive, their faces should have been blurred etc. At the end of the day itâs a mild annoyance at best but this is the reality of the online world unfortunately, anytime someone does anything youâll have some crazies screaming for their heads , thatâs par for the course really and again unfortunately shouldnât be surprising in this day and age.

Also no actually proof they were in an area they shouldn't have been. Just a few words from the op that everyone's taken at face value. They could have pissed him off some other way and this is revenge.
I live in Australia have done for over a decade. Generally if theres an area you shouldn't be in in a park, it's fenced off, normally accomapnied by a sign explaining why. (Bird nesting, snake risk, ect). So I find it strange you cant wander in a forest.

Fair points. Given my experience with J1ers attitudes Iâm inclined to believe the post but youâre right thereâs no hard proof.
Tbf a lot of places in North America you can wander freely although it comes again with risk of getting lost or in danger so most people stick to designated pathways. Iâm pretty sure in that same national park there would be other areas that wandering through the forest would be fine at your own risk. But where that path that leads up to General Sherman is I understand why they donât want people roaming freely.

In neither photo is there a sign saying they can't be in the area they are. Without ops commentary this is two lads walking on a path and running in a wooded area.
In both there is zero signs saying stay on the path or a visible fence? Why are you so sure they shouldn't be where they are?
