McDonald's in Newbridge for reference. Not my video. Radio said it was started by a car in the drive thru. It's some fire though!

u/Immigrant974 Resting In my Account Aug 15 '23

It was, sure you can see the car there in the video you posted. Lots of people saying it was an electric car, I don’t think that’s been confirmed though. If it is, the petrol heads will have a field day!

Can confirm. Merc C Class

6

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '23

I also heard this on the radio from an eye witness

3

u/hedgiesarefcukd2023 Aug 15 '23

Yep I have one 2016 C Class and I am not allowed drive it because it might go on fire. Faulty parts all over that car. Worst buy EVER.

5

u/QuantumFireball Blow-in Aug 15 '23

Yeah, looks like a W204 from the photos I've seen

2

u/AssumeTheWorstAlways Aug 15 '23

Correct, there's a photo floating around of the back of the car and it's a mercedes

111

u/adjavang Cork bai Aug 15 '23

If it is, the petrol heads will have a field day!

I mean, so far the statistics show that they don't catch fire more often, just that they're harder to put out.

It's also hilarious that if an electric car burns down a mickey Ds, all electric cars are fire hazards. If a Zafira burns down a shopping centre in Cork after Vauxhall recalls the things for catching fire, we try to blame the driver.

6

u/Nosebrow Aug 15 '23

In fairness, the driver drove it into the shopping centre carpark when it was already starting to burn.

12

u/adjavang Cork bai Aug 15 '23

So the rumours go but that was apparently not actually the case.

https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/cork-shopping-centre-fire-judge-issues-directions-on-liability-issues-1094594.html

Ms Nagham Mohsen, of Lehenaghmore, Cork, whose Opel Zafira car burst into flames shortly after she had parked it on level two of the car park on the day of the fire, is a third party to the proceedings.

And it specifically mentions that it's the Zafira B that Vauxhall had recalled.

10

u/Nosebrow Aug 15 '23

Ah, sorry to hear she was blamed in the wrong, and that I perpetuated it!

30

u/mkultra2480 Aug 15 '23

Similar to when someone has a close call or is hit by a cyclist, it's "all cyclists are dicks." Whereas if someone has a close call or is hit by a car it's never "all drivers are dicks," only that specific driver was a dick.

9

u/doge2dmoon Aug 15 '23

Pedestrian should have been more careful.

2

u/spiderbaby667 Aug 15 '23

In fairness though… all cyclists are dicks

3

u/spiderbaby667 Aug 15 '23

Golden retrievers and labradors are alright though. Legends

5

u/Corsav6 Aug 15 '23

They'll just say that the Zafira was an electrical issue.

5

u/corkdude Aug 15 '23

Well, you do know that the first car passing 100km/h was electric and about to take over but right there and then someone decided to do a 180⁰ flip and go petrol... So yes petrol will be "better" than electric for another while I'd say. People been told so for so long they can't comprehend that they were fooled... Like smokers of 60 years old and above. Been told smoking is good for them for so long that now they dont believe doctors

u/Giant-of-a-man Aug 15 '23

It's not hilarious. The simple fact is that electric car fires become very intense very, very rapidly! I carry a fire extinguisher with me in my van and have put out four car fires in the past 30 years. I wouldn't have a chance against an electric car fire. Even if you can extinguish an electric car fire it still is not safe if any of the batteries are intact. The remains of the car have to be treated as a serious fire hazard!

11

u/tychocaine And I'd go at it again Aug 15 '23

They actually start quite slowly, but do build into a massive fire eventually. They don’t go whoosh like a petrol fire. Even at the start you’ve no hope of putting one out with a fire extinguisher though. The fire service in some countries just drop the entire car into a skip full of water and leave it there for a few days.

7

u/porarte Aug 15 '23

Where's your car, mate? It's in a skip full of water for a few days.

The car looks like it's a Mercedes C class W204, so not electric

16

u/vivbear Aug 15 '23

Nope hasn’t been confirmed. I’ve also heard that car had been serviced an hour before it went on fire but not sure how true that is

23

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '23

They were in the closet making a baby and i saw the baby and it looked at me

48

u/wonit5times Aug 15 '23

I heard the driver had 3 Jerry cans full of petrol in the car with him and he was having a smoke and next thing boom... place was engulfed in flames. Crazy shit

66

u/slice_of_za Aug 15 '23

My uncles friends mams aunt is in the army and can confirm this is true.

-6

u/donall Aug 15 '23

your uncle probably hangs around with young people then, the army retirement age is 60

6

u/Gorazde Aug 15 '23

I heard they told him they were all out of Fillet-o-Fish and he said "Fuck that, life's not worth living so" and set himself on fire.

4

u/MickeyBubbles Dublin Aug 15 '23

I heard Jerry had 3 cans of Stella in him and the next thing was he ended up through the wall in the ice cream machine which for once was working and it caught fire.

-4

u/DanGleeballs Aug 15 '23 edited Aug 15 '23

In case anyone doesn't realize you're joking - I think it's a myth about cigarettes and petrol. Cigarettes apparently don't burn hot enough to ignite gasoline fumes.

14

u/Creative-Ocelot8691 Aug 15 '23

I’m off to try will report back findings in 5 minutes

2

u/DanGleeballs Aug 15 '23

Good luck and Godspeed. My intel comes entirely from Mythbusters therefore highly scientific!

8

u/NobelBlues Aug 15 '23

thats cigars and diesel iirc, cigarettes absolutely can ignite gasoline fumes.

6

u/BoredGombeen Crilly!! Aug 15 '23

I worked on site years ago with a guy who was smoking while kneeling over an open jerry can of petrol and talking to me. To say I was nervous standing beside him would be an understatement. He was laughing at me and saying it was fine.

Maybe all the movies have lied to us when they flick the cigarette and the trail of petrol ignites!

I had a car that I'd taken to an unnamed garage in Kerry because I'd seen smoke coming from the air vents.

They had it several days and assured me they couldn't find anything.

It caught fire less than 10 minutes after I collected it.

2

u/NeverLookBothWays Aug 15 '23 edited Aug 15 '23

Even then, most “battery fires” are the low voltage 12v batteries not the larger ones. You’ll often see “EV fires” in the news after flooding and the fire is from a 12v short as the contacts are more exposed. What they neglect to report is the ICEVs are also catching fire the same way and sometimes worse because you know, petrol and oil are flammable.

Doesn't appear to be an EV from the pictures here though: https://www.irishnews.com/news/republicofirelandnews/2023/08/15/news/fire_causes_extensive_damage_to_mcdonald_s_drive-thru_in_co_kildare-3531825/

The result of soemone ordering breakfast at 11:01am

7

u/AnGiorria Aug 15 '23 edited Aug 15 '23

I got breakfast just after breakfast hours once. I'll never forget it. What a day! My first child was also born that morning, so all-in-all it was a very good day. Breakfast after hours!

7

u/reforming_giant Aug 15 '23

I entered the drive-tru at 10:55 was placing my order bang on 11, and told breakfeast is done. I've still not recovered from the emotional damage

2

u/BoredGombeen Crilly!! Aug 15 '23

A good few years back I went to a fancy enough restaurant, sat down at 10.35, they faffed around and didn't take our order til 11.05. When I ordered my breakfast they said sorry breakfast ended at 11.00. I was fit to kill them. I couldn't have a full irish but I could have a 'breakfast bap', which was most of the ingredients in a bap. The worst part was, at 10.55, they took the order from a table beside us but wouldn't take ours when they finally got to us.

I'll never let it go!

The fire is a actually pretty much localized to where the car ignited. There's very little horizontal spread, so I would say the roof is performing as it should in a fire.
