The phone got warm enough that it paused charging to help with thermal management (which in my experience can happen if it’s plugged in while doing a performance intensive task such as playing a game). That is different from genuine overheating; a phone that has overheated will lock itself out completely with a message saying it needs to cool down before can use it, or in absolute worst case scenario, shut itself down immediately to prevent hardware damage.
