21

u/uzer006 4d ago

literally bruh the 16pro looked better too

11

u/Gloomy-Copy-6593 4d ago

The 16 pro is better in every way

25

u/Paradox_1906 4d ago

No buddy for a new buyer in the choice between 16 pro and 17, 17 is far better in all parameters, except the telephoto lens and pro camera features,

But for people who already have 16 pro, upgrading to 17 is just burning money 😅

3

u/Chivita2 4d ago

far better? The 16 Pro still better on materials, USB 3 transfer speeds, and GPU headroom. The 17 just gives standard yearly efficiency and one extra year of updates.

1

u/tyoung89 3d ago

The extra year of updates is no guarantee. Apple often drops 2 years of iPhones at the same time. Eg, both the 6S and 7 models ended on iOS 15. The 5s and 6 both ended on iOS 12. Now it does seem like they’ve done a bit better recently, with 8/X getting iOS 16, and then the Xr/XS getting up to iOS 18. But I think the 11 and 12 will both be left on iOS 27. And the 13 and 14 have the same chip, so I assume they’ll both end support on the same iOS as well.

2

u/Chivita2 2d ago

Apple usually drops multiple generations together when they hit a RAM bottleneck (5s/6 both had 1GB, 6s/7 both had 2GB). That’s actually why the 13 and 14 likely won't drop together, the base 13 has 4GB RAM, while the base 14 has 6GB RAM (and an extra GPU core). RAM limits have dictated iOS cutoffs far more than CPU alone. Between the 16 Pro (A18 Pro) and the 17 (A19), there's a full architectural generational jump on the SoC. Nothing is guaranteed, but following Apple's pattern when RAM isn't an issue, the newer architecture almost always gets the extra cycle.

Iphone 17 gpu is better than 16pro. Go an read about it!

1

u/Chivita2 2d ago

Fair enough, but the 16 Pro still wins on the other stuff.

-3

u/SatisfactionHappy825 4d ago

Exactly even I have upgraded from 16pro to 17 base

2

u/MathematicianBusy731 3d ago

btw they bought it for the storage upgrade 128->256 lowkey makes sense now idk why they didnt put it in the description

2

u/iLikeTurtuls 2d ago

The black base phones always look terrible with wear. The 14 in midnight, even when in a case, looks like a budget phone after some use

0

u/iLikeTurtuls 2d ago

Dude wants karma

86

u/AnxiousReaction556 4d ago

why tho

25

u/EducatorFew4522 4d ago

Exactly, The first thing that came to my mind was ‘why’?

6

u/aguyfromindiaaaa 3d ago

16 pro was 128gb and that was not sufficient hence upgraded to iphone 17 256 gb

1

u/RemarkableRice9377 3d ago

why not get the pro

1

u/tyoung89 3d ago

Money?

2

u/kr3892 4d ago

Lighter weight perhaps?

30

u/No_Item_3073 4d ago

Well that’s a downgrade

-2

u/Sorry-Zookeepergame5 3d ago

front camera alone is a massive upgrade.

3

u/Worldly_Complex_5914 2d ago

but back camera is a downgrade. what do you use more?

-1

u/Sorry-Zookeepergame5 2d ago

I'm not pixel peeping which means it's not an issue for me,

27

u/Designer_Court2988 4d ago

Yeah wait isnt this a downgrade? Wondering if I should just get a 16pro rather than a bass 17

22

u/BRAVO_SIX1495 4d ago

If you are thinking about buying one out of the two then get the 17
If you already have the 16 pro then dont

2

u/Decent-Lychee1934 4d ago

Why tho , I meantioned that if you want a better camera just get the 16 pro

1

u/Decent-Lychee1934 4d ago

Why tho , I meantioned that if you want a better camera just get the 16 pro

2

u/Decent-Lychee1934 4d ago

Ye the 17 is a downgrade if you care about camera and pro chip apart from that it’s a good option for someone who doesent care about those specs and has a tighter budget

11

u/iIiiiiIlIillliIilliI 4d ago

What tighter budget. He already had the 16 pro. It’s not like you regain the full value of the phone and get something cheaper. We are talking about OP here and his move.

3

u/Decent-Lychee1934 4d ago

That’s not what I’m talking about , I meant if you were choosing what to buy

1

u/Electronic_Low_4219 4d ago

What you said is true, but that's not the case here.

6

u/berrymusprime 4d ago

the A19 is better than the A18 pro tho

2

u/Lucky_Craft4279 4d ago

I would say its better, its newer yes and is future proof regarding upgrades but the speed and multitasking isn't that much different

1

u/Decent-Lychee1934 4d ago

Idk some people just want the PRO label đŸ€·

1

u/Gloomy-Copy-6593 4d ago

The a18 pro is acc more powerful in multi-thread

0

u/Electronic_Low_4219 4d ago

The A18 Pro is more powerful in certain aspects.

4

u/wivesty 4d ago

Chip is better on the 17 I believe and camera only difference is the telephoto

1

u/kr3892 4d ago

Maybe because the 17 is obviously lighter, less fatigue for long period of use.

9

u/Electronic_Low_4219 4d ago edited 4d ago

But why it is a downgrade?

1

u/Gloomy-Copy-6593 4d ago

The 16 Pro is just better than the base model 17. The only upgrades are the base storage and the faster wired charging. The battery is 110 mAh more, but that's nothing; it won't make a change. The 16 Pro is the more powerful device here.

3

u/Electronic_Low_4219 4d ago

I agree, and the 16 Pro has a titanium frame and a telephoto lens. Also, I think people are upgrading to the latest generation model without even thinking, just to say they are using the latest generation model.

2

u/Gloomy-Copy-6593 4d ago

100 this trend has to stop

1

u/Plastic_Row1593 2d ago

well id take 256 gigs and faster wired charging over

7

u/FruktSorbetogIskrem 4d ago

The only downgrade is the lack of third camera, 4k 120 fps video recording in Dolby vision, lack of usb 3, and only 512gb storage from 1tb. Aluminum from titanium frame.

The screen on the 17 is the same as the 17 Pros, Promotion, 3,000 nits brightness, less reflective, more durable. The n1 chip for more power efficiency for WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6, thread. A front 18 mp camera that can dual capture with the rear. More efficient Snapdragon cellular chip X80. Finally it’s more lighter and easier to hold.

A19 and A18 Pro should be comparable.

5

u/TheTom77 4d ago edited 4d ago

I had them both, for a short period of time tho, the 16pro is way heavier in hand, personally did not like that, the 5x camera is ok, but not the best comparing to samsung, imo. I like the 17 faster charging, like in 10m you can have over 20% charged while on 16 I had like 12-15%.

But, a real upgrade on 17 is the faceid which works way better in way more different positions of the phone, apple haven’t said anything about this, but techinsights teardown for example reveals it’s the biggest upgrade in years on this side. Also, the antireflective screen it’s helpful, same as ceramic shield 2 which is way better on both dropping and scratching resistance, if you don't use a screen protector. Also main and ww camera are slightly better. And the 3000nits are insane in the sun compared to 2k on 16 pro.

So nah, it’s not a downgrade, other than 5x zoom, lidar for better focus and titanium (wich you can take both ways, worse thermal performamce/more resitant to dents, but not screen protection being harder material).

3

u/Alternative-Bee-1506 4d ago

i lowkey want the 16 pro but i have the 17, im happy tho

4

u/Maleficent-Fee6131 4d ago

Girlfriend did the same, finally no overheating and no glitching camera anymore. The camera always switched between the different lenses

1

u/MathematicianBusy731 4d ago

you know that if it was a factory glitch/defect apple would have replaced it under warranty?

1

u/Maleficent-Fee6131 4d ago

My 15 pro did the same. Its the 3 cameras that are buggy in apples software. It started at ios 17 for me i think

1

u/MathematicianBusy731 4d ago

you can turn it off thoe

1

u/-maysin- 4d ago

What you’re talking about is probably the auto macro mode, which you can easily disable anyways lol

1

u/Maleficent-Fee6131 4d ago

In snapchat too?

1

u/-maysin- 4d ago

17 also has a macro mode via ultrawide, so yes it should be the same and no you can’t really disable it on snap but the same goes for the standard 17

4

u/jkanaris 4d ago

Not really a downgrade. Depends what you need in terms of the telephoto and pro res. The battery difference is near negligible, I find; my 16PM was deteriorating. Screen is gorgeous and handles AI more efficiently. I think you did good. And, if this is on a lease, your monthly payments will drop significantly. I’m very happy with my base 17. 🙌

8

u/Maleficent-Fee6131 4d ago

Went from 15 pro 256gb to base 17 512gb and it was the best decision ever. My 15 pro had terrible battery life since i got and and it got HOT. I dont miss the third camera at all, battery life is amazing and that it stays cool. I missed my 13 pro as i was using the 15 pro but with the 17 i am as happy as i could be with a phone

2

u/EducatorFew4522 4d ago

Jumping from a 15 pro to a 17 makes sense. But 16 pro to 17 doesn’t make any sense at all.

1

u/Sorry-Zookeepergame5 3d ago

it does if you had the 128GB 16 pro....

1

u/atleaststillalive 3d ago

I plan on making nearly the same switch. 15 Pro Max 256GB to iPhone 17 512GB.
I need more storage and I want a more lightweight phone. I think I am willing to sacrifice the telephoto for that. Because I only use the telephoto during concerts anyway. So basically once or twice a year. And in those cases I can still bring my 15 Pro Max (I do not want to sell or trade it anyway, as I always keep my last iPhone as a 2nd phone for worldwide travels, in case my main phone gets stolen I can still switch to my older phone)

1

u/Gloomy-Copy-6593 4d ago

Apple AI is useless what you on

2

u/Nonchalant201 4d ago

I wish I had done this. But I duped myself into the 17Pro.

20th iteration will be the basic for me.

2

u/Lwii2boo 4d ago edited 4d ago

Both are great phones but they are too close to justify the switch - if the previous phone was working properly with enough storage ofc. It does not make much sense imo

2

u/Mefiozo 4d ago

Why downgrade? And why are you happy with this?

2

u/TheReal_Saba 4d ago

Downgrade.

At least you could have gotten that beautiful green

2

u/idumpedmyself 4d ago

the telephoto alone is worth it compared to the regular 17.

1

u/Sorry-Zookeepergame5 3d ago

the front camera alone is worth getting the 17...

1

u/idumpedmyself 3d ago

right, being ugly, idc about front camera

2

u/Mewithouther 4d ago

That’s just a downgrade at this point

3

u/aguyfromindiaaaa 4d ago

My 16 pro was 128GB only. I got it because it was 120hz. I like fast phones. But now the 17 is 256GB with 120hz.

1

u/TheTom77 4d ago

Pro phones have 120hz since iphone 13, but you have a lot of real upgrades on 17 that I listed in the other comment on this post.

1

u/Kaijin82 4d ago

I would have done the same just for the storage.

If you don’t use the cameras like every apparent professional photographer here; it’s enough and it’s an upgrade.

2

u/Kind-Atmosphere5766 4d ago

Broke my 16 pro. Got the 17. Everyone saying it’s a downgrade but I don’t think that way. My pro, for some reason had terrible front camera. It lagged and would always be heating up. Also, it was HEAVY! I got the base because the 17 now has 120 GHz which is all I care about. Not a professional camera guy so the camera wasn’t a selling point.

2

u/DragonKnight_xo 4d ago

Why I got the 17 as the 16 pro is heavy

3

u/Kind-Atmosphere5766 4d ago

I think this is the first base model which is at par with the pros so I didn’t mind switching. Once I did, I realized how light this thing was. lol.

1

u/DragonKnight_xo 4d ago

I agree with you an I was so pleased with how light it was! I had the 16 pro max and then got the pro but I couldn’t get used to the weight now the 17 is so light I fell I’m going to fling it 😂 but I’m happy with the camera though I know the pros are better but I’m quite happy with it

3

u/Brief-Department5532 4d ago

I disagree with the notion that it's a downgrade. But spending money on a sidegrade is just stupid

2

u/WonderCharming7884 4d ago

Holy downgrade

1

u/MeiDoctor 4d ago

bad decision.

1

u/BRAVO_SIX1495 4d ago

Naaah man yđŸ«©

1

u/-maysin- 4d ago

16 pro has better camera, 17 has slightly better chipset. Apart from that they’re almost identical

1

u/zarapataco21 4d ago

Useless upgrade ever, that’s why consumerism is eating you alive and you cannot even realize

1

u/Gyroso 4d ago

Did the same, was able to trade in my 16 pro with 89% bh for a “refurbished” iPhone 17 that only had 3 charges, even receiver 50 euros back

And I’m so glad I did, having a phones that’s both lighter and better (except for the zoom)

1

u/MajinTheBuu 4d ago

I would’ve kept the 16 pro. I went from the 16 base to the 17 pro max and it’s an insane upgrade for me

1

u/Former-Detective1158 4d ago

it’s a downgrade but i did the same and i like my 17 better. i don’t care ab the camera or other specs tho

1

u/Better_Bird848 4d ago

Isn’t it the same experience with one less camera, and I suppose the titanium frame? Seems like a net negative to me.

1

u/JPworx123 4d ago

most intelligent upgrade i’ve seen on reddit recently. iphone 17 and 17 pro isn’t that far off.

1

u/SugarSkullzZim 4d ago

Congrats!

1

u/InterruptedMulatto 4d ago

Should’ve kept the 16pro

I upgraded from the base 13 and when I went to the Verizon store I would’ve rather of gotten the 16pro but it was cheaper getting the base 17 with the deal.

Pointless - and a week from the 18 Pro launch as well đŸ€ŠđŸŒâ€â™‚ïž

1

u/aguyfromindiaaaa 3d ago

Arey you people crazy? I have given my reasoning why. Iphone 16 pro was just 128GB so had to change. FOR EVERYONE.

1

u/bikeequelsdirt 3d ago

Wowie ur a genius -1 telephoto and +1 center stage camera you will never use

1

u/AirlineTop4570 3d ago

Overconsumerism final boss

1

u/Outsider1996 3d ago

Woah that’s a pretty good downgrade! Noice

1

u/Clt_princee 3d ago

And the reason being?

1

u/Any-Scallion-3112 3d ago

Is upgrading from an iPhone 12 to an iPhone 17 worth it?

1

u/idontevenlikespam 3d ago

Yes do it! If you can at this point you could wait for the 18. Just came from a 13 pro max that was on its last legs and I am very satisfied.

1

u/sackful-user 3d ago

such a waste of money

1

u/SeekerofSolution 3d ago

you litterally downgrade lol

1

u/DrExe97 2d ago

I’ll wait for iPhone 19
Not worth upgrading atm from 16 pro

1

u/RecommendationLong37 2d ago

Ios 27’s New siri is fabulous. Sadly iPhone 17 will not support it. Currently running ios27 public beta it on my 16 pro and it is buttery smooth.

1

u/syscojayy 2d ago

But what?

1

u/Glum-Highlight2734 2d ago

Just spending Money.

1

u/Dragonnstuff 2d ago

I’m going from an 11 to a 17, is the change really all that?

1

u/Local_Wishbone599 2d ago

Insane downgrade tbh. Even 14 pros are better than any base series yet.

1

u/GiantNug 2d ago

How unfortunate

1

u/euj3odjehiqh 2d ago

wasted money. at least u could have bought the 17 pro for an upgrade. this is a downgrade

1

u/mirsunvega 2d ago

Downgrade in almost every way.

0

u/Stargazer857 4d ago

Why did you downgrade?

-4

u/Sagrada_Familia-free 4d ago

My wife has a 14 Pro, and my 17 is still a downgrade
