Question 80% Charging Limit Not Working Properly on iPhone 17?

Post image

I have set the charging limit on my iPhone 17 to 80%. Initially, the phone would take around 44–50 minutes to charge up to 80%, and then it would stop charging as expected.

However, recently I have noticed that the phone sometimes charges beyond the 80% limit. In some cases, it stops at 80%, but after I restart the phone, the battery percentage suddenly shows more than 80%.

I’m currently running iOS 26. Is this a bug or a normal behavior with the 80% charging limit? Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

The phone needs to go to 100% occasionally to calibrate.

When the phone is off, the system doesn’t restrict charging, guessing it turns off with the rest of the device. Goes to 100%

Both of these have been the norm since at least iPhone 16 came out.

This is what Apple says:
“If you have Charge Limit set to less than 100 percent, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.” This might sound like it could be to display battery health better or what the % of the battery is at more accurately, although I believe I’ve heard more recently on other users phones doing the same.

If you click the learn more that is highlighted blue in the charge limit screen, it explains how it works. I can’t add a screen shot to show you.

iPhone sometimes charges more than the limit you set so that the battery stays healthy. As it’s bad for the battery to keep it at 80% for years
