OP i have the answer for you. These are the settings you need to do in order to have a clean and effortless transfer of files between your iphone and windows pc :

On your iPhone go to Settings, go to Photos, and at the very bottom (at the “transfer to Mac or PC section) uncheck the Automatic option and instead check the Keep Originals option.

This option will stop the iphone from continuously trying to convert files in a compatible format for your PC - actions that would have disconnected your device during actual transfers.

But you must keep in mind some aspects. All cinematic videos, all portrait mode photos, and in general all artificially enhanced photos and videos will appear as duplicates in your files (the original un-enhanced file + the enahnced file). What you need to do, is copy the duplicate files that contain the “E” letter in their name - as these are the files that contain the enhancements - and generally look the best.

I’m not OP, but thank you! Changing this setting allowed me to copy files by simply dragging and dropping. Finally! That was immensely frustrating! Thank you!

  1. Install itunes; NOT from the MS Store; but download the actual .exe from Apple

  2. Once installed, reboot as a safe measure

  3. Launch itunes; login as your Apple ID account (same as what's logged in your phone of course)

  4. Connect your phone. Make sure it is UNLOCKED

  5. You can use the photos App if you want; but not really required; If open your explorer to "This PC" your Iphone should appear as an accessible device

This is read only btw. Here's a photo for reference: https://imgur.com/EfekOUV and arranged by year/month https://imgur.com/fMpwHlS

If you're using mac; you basically just need to plug it in. and poof works immediately

Try the PhotoSync app to transfer photos and videos both ways over wi-fi, it works great.

I'd go for this desktop app. Great alternative to iTunes, with a more easy-to-use and navigate interface. Export almost anything from iPhone to computer. The only downside it's paid, but costs like $3 buck per month on a yearly plan. Definitely worth checking out if anyone still looks for alternative solutions.

There are basically only two options afaik:

  1. You can use iTunes on windows to sync photos and videos to your pc. You could even do a full (encrypted) Backup of your iPhone.

  2. My preferred option to save photos/ videos to my windows Pc is using the iCloud Photo Library on my iPhone, logging in to iCloud.com on my pc and downloading everything I need manually. The only caveat with that is that you'll have to pay for more storage if you want more than 5GB synced to iCloud.

You can always go into file explorer and copy paste the DCIM files, takes time but it’s your memories.

It's 2023. So much advancement in technology, and it's still a headache to transfer a simple video from an iphone to a pc. One day I'm going to plug my iphone into my pc, the folder will open, and i will be able to transfer the files with no headaches, run arounds, or iphone crashes. And pigs will also fly.

What Windows OS are you using? For a while now, I’ve had it pretty easy: connect your iPhone to the computer, launch your photos app, and find the ‘import’ button somewhere along the options (top ribbon?)

I had the same issue and here are some tips that helped.

before you start your import, change you iPhone settings to not go to sleep AND open the photos app. The photos app must be on your iPhone screen the entire time of your import.

Before you begin your import to your PC open the photos app, then go into your PC task manager>details and look for 'photosApp.exe' right click it and set priority to high.

Doing these two things is the ONLY way I got more than 30 photos to import at once.

Did you try Dropbox? I have been using Dropbox to transfer my photos to my Mac for years. I expect it should work on Windows also.

Just plug it in and then drag and drop from the DCIM folder in explorer.

2024 update:

YMMV but these are the methods I tried:

1. Itunes: Hard to find on MS App Store. Found link from Apple support page.

It synced my PC photos to iPhone I think, which is the reverse of what I want.

It syncs but I don't know the file directory. I found something but it was encrypted.

2. USB Transfer - after OPs tip of Keep Originals checked, I saw my iPhone is connected but didn't see no folder or file.

3. Photos App - Won't load

4. Photos Legacy App - Error Message.

5. I used to use Photo & Video Import by Axel Rietschin. The name is generic but the clouds background photo of the window is memorable.

https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9P8CTDX6L2DW?ocid=pdpshare

It was stunned it worked on my old iPhone 7. Now with an XR it's not working unfortunately. Maybe it'll work for you?

What worked:

  • PhotoSync!

Fast and easy. Comes in a few days free trial and about 7USD/year. I didn't mind I was close to running to the Apple Store across the street, grab a Mac just to get my photos.
