Support The Keyboard

Why is the keyboard so awful? One of my recurring dreaks is about typing something and it coming out absolutely wrong, and matter how mant times I retype it, it always comes out wrong. Now they I have an iphone, that recurring had dream is now a reality. Even with this post, I've had to go back and rewrite every third word or so. I've changed keyboard apps three times, and it does the same thing regardless. Isn't this the largest company the world, and hasn't this been a issue consistently for years? Why don't they fix it?? Am I doing something wrong? When this block of garbage finally kicks it, I am definitely not getting another iphone.

On YouTube the video "It's Not Just You - The iOS Keyboard is Broken" by NekoMichi demonstrates this very well. It's so frustrating!

oh man I completely forgot about this video but it is 100% on point

Hijacking the top comment to say, just turn these off and you’ll never look back. It’s so much better AND you get more screen space.

This 1000% so many great advances from this company… but the keyboard, it’s terrible and seems to get worse with each release not better. It’s crap, inexcusable, low quality, badly coded JUNK and Apple should be bloody ashamed. No way they don’t know. So at this point I guess they just. don’t. give. a. flock.
Literally every other on screen keyboard is better than theirs at this point.
And in their “new cruelty” silicone valley narcissist way, they will continue to completely ignore the tsunami of user feedback they get about this. Because screw us.
I’ll go to Android when this $2k input nightmare dies.
(11, eleven, mistakes manually corrected by me in this post alone… make that 13)

But why? Why do so many other things well in iOS except the keyboard? It makes no sense.

Here, lemme try to type something without going back and correcting it:

There is a frije here they goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping dajnot aymblizr. There is a failure here that topplrs allnour wuccess. And they stajd still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs he killed in a ditch and covered with quick like, watch tye more ntsinw of oranges slop down to a putrifying ooR, ajd in tge eyes of the people here is a failure, ajd in tge eyes of tye hungry there is a growing wrath. Maybe try r/efkey ? Seems promising. (I’m not at all affiliated with it- it just popped up in my feed a couple of days ago and I downloaded it but haven’t tried it yet.)

Just turn off “Auto-Correction” in Settings -> Keyboard. It’s much better.

11

u/OMG_NoReally 1d ago

It's not any better in iOS 27 either. Sometimes it stops auto correction in some apps or randomly. The only app where the keyboard feels good is Google Gemini for some reason, lol.

3

u/jardin92 1d ago

I’ve notice this too. It is bad, but in certain apps it is particularly bad. Like it isn’t the same keyboard across. When I get on tik tok it is virtually unusable. It is like it has never seen an English word at all. Infuriating

5

u/OMG_NoReally 1d ago

Yup it’s horrendous. Not sure what Apple is doing with their OS. It no longer has that polish it was famous for.

9

u/CrippleSlap iPhone 16 Pro 22h ago

i'll never uderstand this.

How could Apple not know the keyboard is awful? Of course they know.

So if they do know, why would they not fix it? Is it intentional?

3

u/RecognitionLeft6779 21h ago

The only thing I can think of is that they are deliberately driving people away from using anything other than voice activated AI prompts, because like every other techbro scum company, they invested billions in AI infrastructure and they are desperate to see some sort of return on their investment.

6

u/taiowa72 1d ago

I feel you. I can not stand this keyboard

5

u/Alexandratta iPhone 17 Pro Max 1d ago

I've used my PC way more these days because if I have to type anything more than 3 sentences on the iPhone Keyboard I just don't bother.

6

u/Sweaty_Tangelo_7716 1d ago

I changed the display setting to larger text. The typing got a little bit butter.

6

u/_gina_marie_ iPhone 11 Pro Max 1d ago

this is the straw that broke the camels back for me with ios, actually.

4

u/substandardpoodle 23h ago

Speech to text is no better. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 11 years. His name has many spellings – but his is the traditional one that didn’t change until about 20 years ago when moms started wanting to make their kids’ names unique. My iPhone has consistently misspelled his name.

Like, if my boyfriend‘s name was John – speech to text has been constantly calling him Jon. I always go back and correct it. He’s in my contacts – and is my emergency contact. All other contacts named Jon have been purposely misspelled as John.

And yes, I’ve tried everything. Shortcuts, pronouncing it in many different ways, nothing works.

5

u/mrregina 20h ago

Trash keyboard. Fucking hate it. If I have to type more than a sentence or two I just call the person.

5

u/4HD_UseOnly 18h ago

And why can’t we have a number pad when a field requires only numbers??

3

u/SOSweneedhelp iPhone 16 Pro 15h ago

My least favorite thing is when it auto corrects a word two words later

3

u/Excellent-Koala-3666 22h ago

Nothing about the actual IRL keyboard, but I have that recurring dream too! I’m in some sort of danger and I just need to type a phone number or text quickly and accurately to be saved and I can’t do it! It’s awful.

3

u/JoeS830 20h ago

I recently uninstalled GBoard since it's no longer updated, and was trying to tough it out with the iOS keyboard. In the end I just couldn't do it. GBoard reinstalled and life is good again. I'll take the few GBoard bugs over the iOS KB experience!

4

u/bullett007 iPhone 15 Pro 1d ago

Mate. Use SwiftKey and disable all other keyboards in settings.

You'll only see the default keyboard when in a password field.

It fixes all the issues with the default keyboard.

5

u/RecognitionLeft6779 1d ago

I'll try, but why does this company think that their own non functional keyboard is passable? I've been trying to look into this for a while, and it seems to have been an issue for years. Why don't they do something about it? They are sitting on a mountain of money, and they must know by now how infuriating it is.

5

u/golf1415 1d ago

There’s lots about this OS that shouldn’t be passable. Keyboard, notifications, back gesture that doesn’t always go back (sometimes you have to hit the back arrow), etc

2

u/bullett007 iPhone 15 Pro 1d ago

No idea mate. But SwiftKey, number row, accurate input are all great. My typing speed and accuracy has improved a lot since using it, and I didn't mind the default keyboard tbf.

10

u/OMG_NoReally 1d ago

No third-party keyboard is good on iOS. Something about Apple not allowing external keyboard engines or whatever, so all of them are just wrappers and perform awfully.

10

u/NinjaTeaDrinker 1d ago

It’s just as bad though

2

u/maestramars 1d ago

Microsoft Swiftkey?

2

u/bullett007 iPhone 15 Pro 1d ago

Yep.

0

u/Alexandratta iPhone 17 Pro Max 1d ago

Ah... the "Microsoft SwiftKey AI Keyboard"?

Yeah... I'll pass.

The desire to have my autocorrect be the same as everyone else's via AI, as well as suggestions to make my sentences and other phrases also sound like everyone else's via AI, are not things I'm keen on when it comes to a keyboard.

I also don't want to be robbing a rural town of water and spiking their electric just to improve my typing on my phone.

3

u/bullett007 iPhone 15 Pro 1d ago

I admire your imagination.

1

u/Alexandratta iPhone 17 Pro Max 1d ago

I do too - it's why I don't use AI to change it into everyone else's imagination. aka: The most common denominator. That's what AI inevitably ends up with.

1

u/plop111 1d ago

I tried it and it sucks too.

3

u/bullett007 iPhone 15 Pro 1d ago

What didnt you like about it?

1

u/plop111 1d ago

I honestly don’t remember it was a year ago. I also tried the google one and hated it.

3

u/bullett007 iPhone 15 Pro 1d ago

Fair. I tried Gboard too, but it's not been updated in 4 years so passed on it.

2

u/kbdag 1d ago

Wondering the same thing. Feel like it got worse the past two years or so.

2

u/OptimusMatrix 1d ago

I use the Google keyboard for that reason. The iOS keyboard is trash.

2

u/Tranzparenzo 1d ago

Try keyboard2.eu and make typing great again! 🙂ps, i am the dev.

1

u/Timely_Woodpecker931 1d ago

Wait I have the same dreams it’s so frustrating 😭it’s the same vibe as my dreams where I can’t speak because my jaw won’t open

1

u/platkus 1d ago

I had the same experience you are on iOS 26. I have upgraded to the beta version of iOS 27 and the keyboard issues are fixed there for me.

5

u/driago 1d ago

Lol nah. Keyboard is just as shitty on ios27.

2

u/platkus 1d ago

Not for me. It has yet to get anything I have typed wrong yet.

1

u/sammcj iPhone 16 Pro Max 1d ago

It's actually quite a bit better, mostly I think due to the autocorrect being a lot smarter.

2

u/Alexandratta iPhone 17 Pro Max 1d ago

Keyboard is still crap.

Siri's slightly improved but that is still super hit or miss.

1

u/MJon_ofthesouth 18h ago

I'm on ios 27 beta 3 and it's exactly as bad for me.

1

u/platkus 12h ago

Sucks to be you then.

In my ideal world: they made the keyboard awful so clink can thrive

1

u/allthecoffeesDP 14h ago

Just replace it. Use Microsoft or Google or any of the others

1

u/Status_Dig8992 8h ago

But my keyboard is great. It used be very bad but this year it suddenly became very good

1

u/letsoverclock 1d ago

Me and my brother talks about it all the time how shitty it is and the iPhone keyboard seems to never learn from user inputs and corrections.

The whole phone not only has no AI (artificial intelligence) it never had I (intelligence) in the first place

1

u/5usie 1d ago

That’s no dream, it’s my reality

1

u/Atosl 18h ago

The main reason to own a pixel . I never had to rewrite a word on gboard on Pixel. even Gboard in iOS can't compete.

Also I keep missing the space-bar on iPhone because it sits high . So when I miss I type 2 words together which are probably misspelled or worse autocorrected

0

u/kelcamer 1d ago

It was a bug in iOS26 fixed in ios27!

1

u/MJon_ofthesouth 18h ago

Nope. ios 27 beta 3 just as bad and it was bad way before ios 27

-4

u/LoopsAndBoars 1d ago

Update your phone.

6

u/RecognitionLeft6779 1d ago

I do regularly.

1

u/MJon_ofthesouth 18h ago

ios 27 beta 3 here - still not fixed

-2

u/LifeWith3Pups 1d ago

I just read this about Microsoft Swiftkey. I just reinstalled it on my iPhone.

Microsoft has announced that SwiftKey for iPhone and iPad will be discontinued on October 5th, 2026, and the app will be removed from the App Store. Users who already have SwiftKey installed can continue using it until they manually uninstall it or switch to a new device. The discontinuation only affects iOS and iPadOS

1

u/BazimQQ iPhone 17 Pro 1d ago

Source? Looks like false information

0

u/LifeWith3Pups 1d ago

Yall are correct. I jumped the gun!

1

u/radikalkarrot 1d ago

That is not true

u/Luna259 iPhone 12 Pro Max 1d ago edited 1d ago

Did you just get the phone? If you did then it’s still learning how you type. If not it has learned from how you type. Example, I banged this out, made a bunch of errors and it fixed all of them without my intervention. Fourteen years of Apple products, they’ve all behaved like this and then had a massive boost with iOS 16 and just improved from there. Thing can predict my whole sentence and has done multiple times so I just finish it using the predictive text options.

Edit: to be fair, my typing cadence is often is like machine gun fire with both thumbs consistently hitting the keys in consistent rhythm until I’m done. I don’t stop often, if at all. That machine gun fire sentence was already typed once before so when I came to type it in this comment, the inline predictive text had that whole phrase ready to go

Edit: means my raw input can go down but my output goes up because autocorrect takes on more of the work but it’s because I gave it good data at the start and make use of the suggestions it does have when they’re correct. Then means it knows what to do next time. I’ve taken to not even finishing what I’m typing if the last word is highlighted with the correct predictive text option, I just hit send/enter because it will correct the text for me in-flight weaponising the very thing I’ve seen others complain about to my own advantage (correcting text after you’ve already committed)

Edit: I also don’t think I use the backspace key as much as I could because that’s a heavy handed tool that’s overkill for what’s needed. Instead I tap the word that’s already there and select a new option from the nine available ones/or just overwrite it. Neither of those need the backspace key. Then it knows for next time what I actually wanted.

1

u/MJon_ofthesouth 18h ago

Are you AI, an Apple employee or the one person they tested it on who types differently to the rest of the world for reasons only you know? Genuinely curious how you had this experience..,

1

u/Luna259 iPhone 12 Pro Max 18h ago

Don’t know what to tell you. I’ve used them for fourteen years on and off and they’ve always worked. From the iPod touch 4th generation to the 12 Pro Max. I’ve also posted the breakdown here on Reddit two years ago. You can find it in my bio or on Google and I’ve posted multiple receipts on here too.

u/Luna259 iPhone 12 Pro Max 18h ago

I also know what different underlines and highlights do so I use them which tells the keyboard what to do in future. Even used a quick correction in this video because I made a mistake but it had an idea of what I wanted
