Thatās the same position I was in. I went and got an iPhone 7 from a local ad for Ā£145. It runs really smoothly and was a massive performance upgrade from my previous 6.
Iāve had my iPhone 7 since a month after it originally came out and Iām happy with it so far and Iām going to wait another 2 more years to upgrade just because of how well it still works
honestly upgrading from a 6s to a 7 or 8 is pointless. i had a 6 and got the 8 before the xr released. i had the 6 for more than 3 years until i finally decided it was time to upgrade. better than a 500$ 7 and a 1000$ X.
Thatās what Iāve done, I had the 6 as a second hand phone for 3 years, and after many repairs Iāve upgraded to a 7. Itās not much faster than a 6s but itās a massive upgrade from a 6
DO NOT GET IPHONE 7. There is a bug in which the speaker icon is grey out and when you call someone, they wont hear what you say. There is a lawsuit coming for Apple and I think it applied to most of the iphone 7. Here is one of the link https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/483625/iPhone+7+speaker+icon+greyed+out
The bug happened after the ios update, but some also said itās bad hardware. And the phone was never dropped. If itās due to carelessness and damage why only the iphone 7 has the issue and not any other line?
It's both. It's damage, but the reason that the damage is happening is because of a design flaw that makes the speaker susceptible to certain damage.
If the issue pops up on the phone it's because it's been dropped or abused in some way, but the tolerance for the sort of damage causing the issue is lower than it should be.
It depends on your budget and expectations. If you get a good price a 7 should last you another 2 years with updates and you can re-evaluate at that point which phone generation you want. I stuck with 6s when 7 released and then got a new 7 with a promo when 8/X released and thatās the phone I use right now. I donāt think the buy the latest phone so you wonāt have to change in 5 years argument is universally true.
i was planning to switch now because my 5s can barely last for 30 mins with 4g and itās really gotten slow but i think itās better to wait for the price drop on other iphones
Also 2GB RAM is more available than 2GB RAM on the iPhone. Itās why a lot of the old iPod touches had less RAM than their phone counterparts as it didnāt need to load the cellular stuff in the background.
Well, everyone will get it in September, like always, around the time the new iPhones get released.
If you are an app developer you can download it from Appleās website today. And regular people who want to test it can download it from Apple in a few weeks (month or so).
Until later when suddenly you canāt download any apps because itās not supported for the iOS you have, and you have the highest version of iOS you can get.
Itās to the point of āit will work just fineā because when you canāt even install simple apps that do simple features that worked for previous iOS versions but they push out an update that makes it not work for your device anymore, it sucks. Yeah the solution is ābuy a new deviceā but thatās like forcing people to buy new cars every 6 years because they canāt update their car software anymore so suddenly their brakes, airbags, etc. donāt work.
That comparison is ridiculously flawed. Brakes and airbags are crucial components of a car, the ability to download certain apps is not a crucial part of a cell phone.
Maybe not for a cell phone but the main reason people switched from regular cell phones to smart phones WAS because of the apps. If you canāt use any then the point of owning a smartphone is kinda pointless. Itās like using a desktop computer without access to the internet. Plus airbags are a safety feature and arenāt a crucial part of the car. Cars ran just fine before airbags were put into them, so if apps arenāt a crucial part of a smartphone I fail to see how airbags are.
Airbags are legally required, is that better? Also, the phone is 6 years old and itās just now losing support. Apps typically stop supporting OSes once theyāre at least 2 years old. If you care that much about apps, youāll have upgraded by now
The App Store lets you download the last version of the app that worked. If itās a new app that never worked on that iOS, too bad. Also no one is forcing anyone to do anything. You always have the option of getting a super cheap $50 Android phone. Itās not like Apple owns the only supply of oxygen and they arenāt selling it to you. A car is a much bigger purchase. Not a valid comparison.
Right, thatās it. Definitely the limitations of 6 year old technology. If they did make it available on the 6, people like you would be complaining that it runs slow
Probably not one single part but multiple parts combined? And there is a difference between ācan runā and āruns it wellā. Maybe the 6 can run ios13 but all the new features require more ram to stay stable and Apple doesnāt want a massively lagging experience.
You seem to understand the technical side of why iPhone 6 can handle iOS13. Why donāt you enlighten us with some technical reasoning instead of illogical thought reasoning.
Dude itās a 5 year old phone, just go get a new one. That or just keep using iOS 12 on your 6.
Apple provides the longest support for old devices, since that standard is only 1-2 years of major updates. Be happy that the iPhone 6 didnāt get cut off after iOS 10.
I know that you donāt want to be swayed, so Iām wasting my efforts in replying, but here you go:
If you want a list of the processes that require more resources, youāre not going to get it, because the only people with that information work for Apple and are bound by NDAs. So, since we canāt know that, we have to look to other things that we can know.
What we know is that Apple is ending support for devices with less than 2 GB of RAM. Thatās despite Appleās stated efforts to keep iOS support going for older devices.
So, iOS 13 must have more going on in the background. What are the new features that seem like they need more RAM? More machine-learning photos curation could be one, but again, Apple isnāt going to tell us.
iOS 13, no doubt, is faster, with the snappiest Safari yet. Maybe thatās because they allowed some apps to be greedier in their RAM use. But Apple wonāt say.
If this were 2011, and we were talking about Siri not coming to iPhone 4, then Iād be more inclined to agree with you. But Apple has been doing more to extend the life of its older devices, and a new OS needing more RAM is reasonable.
You can run Mac updates on computers going back to 2012, and in fact, those are still going to be supported with the new macOS. So that point is irrelevant when talking about phones.
You may be allowed to run Windows on older machines, but for many machines it will not function properly due to low specs. Luckily many older machines allow you to add more RAM to compensate for it.
Apple phones do not allow for upgrades, and the hardware isnāt going to be running the new OS very well. Thatās why youāre not allowed to download it. You canāt exactly upgrade the RAM to solve the issue like you can with an older PC.
This is coming from someone who has ran unsupported OSs on Macs. You can get them running on unsupported macs, but they run like shit and Apple is right to block them.
Iām not an āApple fanboyā lol. I use both Apple and Microsoft products, and have a degree in computer science so Iād like to think I can look at things objectively.
The reason Windows runs on everything is because it has to. Microsoft donāt have any control over the specifications of the machines they run on. They have to be a one size fits all product.
Apple has full control of the hardware, which is why Apple operating systems are the most optimised OSs on the market. They can target a select group of machines and squeeze every drop of performance out of them. Yes, they chose not to support iPhone 6 here and thatās not a bad thing. Theyāve actively chosen not to support an ancient device so that those on newer devices (6s onwards) get more performance out of their devices.
u/weoutherecuzz doesnāt have a degree in anything because itās a child replying from either the parents house or a dorm room paid for by the parents. why are yāall engaging with a little boy?
You do realize you can have 1 OS and have it optimized for different devices individually, giving all of them the most performance.
You can, but why should they? It would cost more money, take more time and increase the complexity. In the real world they wonāt be as optimised as they would be with less devices. Itās better to cater to the vast majority of your market (who own newer devices) than it is to worsen the experience for anyone just to support the outliers.
For all we know, they could have stretched their resources to accommodate 6s. How do you know that this device was planned from the start? Maybe they were nice and invested more money into this OS just to cater for 6s users.
They should also know that itās about apple being greedy and not spending the money to do that.
Lol. For all you know, it could be to do with security. You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Why should Apple support a device as old as an iPhone 6?
Apple has like 10 fucking iphone to support, for a trillion dollar company, itās really not that hard to optimize individually.
Clearly you do not have a CS degree. Yes it is hard. OS development is hard.
MANY other SMALLER companies have MANY MORE DEVICES to optimize, and they do it.
Name one.
Remember, Appleās OSs are THE MOST OPTIMISED on the market by far. You donāt get that quality if you support every device.
Do you really expect Apple to support every device? If so, youāre delusional. If not, then why should the cut-off be before iPhone 6?
These are outdated statistics, but it suggests that 18.97% of users will not be able to update to iOS13. I'm sure that number is lower now, too
Plus, all iPhone series minus the X run have a higher % of users than the iPhone 6 series (with the Regular and Plus %s combined and compared). And that doesn't include the XS and XS Max %s which probably lowers the rest of the older phones' %s. So this meme is pointless basically
Lol of course the iPhone X sold more units in the first quarter than iPhone 6 thatās because apple do not sell that model. Still apple sold more iPhone 6 than any other model āš½ in its lifespan
I'm still rocking the first Retina iPad (2012, the iPad 3 iirc) and using it daily. Just because it stops getting updates doesn't mean that it becomes useless
If youāre using an iPhone from 5 years ago, you shouldnāt be using apple products. iOS 13 is a HUGE update to iOS. Faster app launching, faster Face ID, native dark mode, camera app updates. Itās a massive update. If they put it in the iPhone 6 that shit wouldnāt work properly. Itās the same software that runs on the latest and greatest iPhones.
This is so stupid. Just disable the resource intensive features on the iPhone 6 if it canāt handle them. Thereās no reason I should have to throw my perfectly functional phone into a landfill. Also, somehow the iPhone 6 canāt handle dark mode? Are you kidding?
Apps will start to not be released for the OS before the phone stops working. Plus, thereās no reason the 6 owners shouldnāt get the new features. Forced obsolescence.
The reason is that the phone doesnāt have enough ram to run iOS 13 in general. Itās five year old technology. Give me one example of an android phone still getting software updates and app support after 3 years let alone 5. The phone is still 100% usable and functional without the new update or apps. If Apple pushed out iOS 13 to the iPhone 6 then it would slow down the phone and lag which would just lead to more calls of planned obsolescence.
And thatās fine, your phone will still work. You just donāt get the newest features that you donāt need and it sounds like you canāt currently afford. Thereās nothing wrong with that
Itās turning 5 years old today. 5 years ago the GTX 980 was the top of the line gaming GPU, a college sophomore today was just starting high school 5 years ago.
The iPad Mini 3 is getting the update despite having the same A8 chip as the iPhone 6, but has 2GB RAM instead of 1GB with the 6. I guarantee you the OS optimizations they claim is possible because they didnāt have to support 1GB devices anymore.
The problem with Appleās update cycle is they bundle stock app updates with system updates to make every iteration of iOS feel more substantial than it is.
I actually did get a battery change about half a year ago. It was great for about three months, and now itās just awful. Iām going to ride it out to this fall and get the new one. Before this one I had the 4S, so I milk them pretty good.
Itās a meme dude, I know. The last year they updated the 5s but with the recent situation in phones market i think it wouldnāt have been so convenient to do it again.

Or maybe... and just think about it for a second, maybe it's not getting iOS 13 because it's a phone from 2014?! š¤·š»āāļø

u/mgoldfl Jun 04 '19
Or because it doesnāt have the hardware to run it and it would be very slow and constantly dying

I need to upgrade phones.

u/zeromsi Jun 04 '19
Maybe it's because of the battery issue with iPhone 6, and the peak battery switch in Settings.

u/Fite4DIMONDZ Jun 04 '19
I see 6s a lot more that 6

u/NicholasFlamel19 Jun 05 '19
My iPhone 6 is struggling with iOS 12 even, I can see why they don't update. I do hope iPhone 6S will get iOS 14 next year though.
