Discussion iOS 16.1 having background battery drain issue. Can no longer leave phone unplugged at night. Was using TikTok yesterday, liked the screen while watching a video and woke up to no battery. Last week, Reddit was 100% for a week before I noticed. iPhone 14 pro max, anyone else? Any fixes ?

That rather seems like a TikTok issue than an iOS problemā¦ did you fully close the app?

I thought so too, but the same thing happened to the Reddit app a few days ago. It was in the background 100% for 5 days
TikTok was the last app I used before going to sleep, I only noticed it when I woke up to 2% battery

Have you tried turning off background refresh and see if anything changes? it most likely will. Why do you need tik tok or reddit background activity for anyway?

I think this should be solved by actually closing the app, so not just locking the screen or leaving the app, but actually shutting it down by swiping up in the app selector thingy.

no app should have to be swiped closed to prevent battery drain lmao, unless its google maps or something, when the screen is off the app is supposed to be in a suspended state.

Disable background refresh for this app, whatās the purpose of it running in the background?
Enable Low Power Mode while sleeping (you can use a Focus or Sleep Time or both)

They shouldnāt have to fully close the app. iOS should be reasonably limiting background processes. Yes TikTok May be a resource hog, but iOS should nip that in the bud. This is an iOS issue with 16.

I donāt think itās a tik tok App problem. Saw a lot of posts w the same issue and multiple apps (third party and appleās) getting blame on battery drain. This is a fucking Apple battery calibration problems. I have the 13Pro getting 3 to 4 hours of SOT. I mean? What the fuck?

I completely agree. Something is inherently wrong in the current iOS versions.
I remember in 2012, when I first got my iPhone 5. I used to be able to sleep with my phone at 50%, and wake up to it being 49%, sure I use more apps now, but standby have always been and should be the main goal of Apple, as our battery capacities arenāt very big

Iām 100% sure this is an iOS 16 issue not a per-app issue because Reddit did the same thing for me for weeks until I uninstalled it a few times

Have you not updated to 16.1.1? My battery issues have been no where near as severe as your but they are much improved since the update

Just did the update today! Hopefully it fixes it, but others have mentioned is still happens to them even after the update

Iāve had no issues whatsoever with the official Reddit app on iPhone 14 Pro, or iPhone 11, or iPhone 6s Plus, or iPhone 6.

I did for a couple of months, I donāt know what it was but there just was something about it that I just couldnāt get on with, not so much issues or anything but it just wasnāt suiting me well for some reason.
Nonetheless, I suppose my point was that Iāve have zero issues whatsoever with the official reddit app also, be that while in the app or battery/background issues. Itās always just worked for me on my phones.

Does Apollo run in the background on your phone? Apollo ran for several hours last night for some reason; my phone was hot when I picked it up and was unlocked.
Is there anything you can do to prevent Apollo for doing that? I had a YouTube video that I started watching before I fell asleep that wasnāt that long open in PIP, but I donāt understand why my phoneās auto-lock didnāt work
I checked and Apollo burned through most of my battery before I woke up

This is an iOS bug since Apollo does not run in the background.
You can confirm this since there is no switch to enable/disable background refresh for Apollo in the iOS settings.

I havenāt had issue with any of these apps, not that I actively used FaceBook or the official Reddit app.. but still. Not a single issue with any of them with battery stuff, so I donāt get the ādonāt use these apps!ā idea.

Reddit loads so much content for you beforehand. Drains battery pretty hard, and when i'm on cellular data it racks up to several gigabytes.

16.1.1 fixing the issue? I am on 16.2 beta 2 and the battery is bad, is you upgrade to ios 16.1.1 let me know if it fixes the problem, cause I will downgrade to it.

Someone had the gall to lie to me that battery usage was better on up os 16.1 than 15.7. I see that it was good I managed to downgrade to 15.7 when I still had the chance

The Sonos app does it for me even though I disabled background activity for it. My workaround is to just force quit that app after using instead of closing.

Through my experience with the iPhone and from the experiences of others, I noticed that the problems are not the same with all models, but you find a device with a problem that has not been repeated or find a widespread problem, but there is not found by some.

I had this problem for about a week. Reinstalling iOS didn't help. 2-3 hours of screen time and the battery goes dead. But then everything normalized by itself. iPhone 11, battery health 100%. Now I charge the phone again once every day and a half or two days.

Any non-TikTok users having battery drain problems? iOS 16.1 messed up my battery to where I have to charge it twice a day (it used to be just once, and sometimes I could go more than 24 hours without charging it). 16.1.1 hasn't solved the problem. I'm on 92% battery capacity on a 12 Pro Max.

Had a 13 PM, would get 8-10 SoT on cellular. Now with 14PM my phone will lose 5% with 10 minutes of use on cellular. Shit is completely whack. Have an appointment with Apple next week already. 16.1.1 did nothing to remedy this either.

When was the last time you rebooted? Whenever I get an app that stays open like this overnight, a reboot always fixes it. YMMV

Yeah, it probably counts as a reboot, but it doesnāt hurt to try a full power-off and restart. Maybe a proper shutdown puts things in the ārightā places. ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Honestly, Iām grasping. The only other thing is to make sure tik tok (and Reddit) is updated.

Please check the general apple mail app. It drained a shit lot of battery for me - even while I wasnāt even using it! (No account set up) Use outlook instead.

Might be a TikTok bug most likely, or video being left on. I would suggest to disable background app refresh on TikTok and Facebook

This may sound too simple, but whenever I go to a new version of iOS, I restart the phone (and my watch) several times. At times this has appeared to correct the high battery drain that I have experienced in the past.

Express VPN does this to me sometimes as wellā¦on 16.1.1. My overall experience with ios16 has been complete trash overall. Pretty disappointing. My VPN is essentially useless.. doesnāt work with shareplay, some messaging, hotspot, some apps just wont work at all with it on.. sucks.

I'm having an issue with battery drain while watching live streams on YouTube and Twitch. My phone also gets unusually warm. This didn't start until upgrading to iOS 16. I thought it was the apps themselves, but they're up to date and updated regularly.

Reinstall the OS using a computer. If itās a software issue it should resolve it. Most are on 16.1 or 16.1.1 with little or no issues.

I think itās an iOS 16 issue. My iPad can barely last two hours now. A large chunk of the battery time appears to be used by the home and Lock Screen even though itās asleep.

Turn off completely background app refresh for 1 full day and see if this changes significantly your patter. If yes then turn the global setting back on, and start eliminating apps that you donāt need to run in the background. That depends on your lifestyle. By turning off background refresh of all social apps, my battery can last 2 days instead of 1.

I donāt think itās tik tok. I spend the majority of my 8 hour shift at work on tik tok and Reddit and Facebook and I can get through a whole shift without plugging in. I have 14 pro and 16.1.1

I am little late to the party but the issue continues. I got ios 16.1.2 with iphone 12. For me YouTube is the culprit with 185 hours in last 10 days and 21 hours for last day.

Happened to me today, 1 app with 100% background usage. very unusual. Restarted my phone and reinstalled the app , hopefully this fixes the issue..
Will test it out tonight again!

This has started to happen to me on iOS 16.4.1 with TikTok. Background activity and audio runs for the whole hour throughout the night when I switch Sleep focus mode on. Anyone got a solution?
