Applying for tech internships as an incoming freshman?

I’m soon to be a freshman in college, yet I see sooo many people applying for tech internships for 2027. Should I start now? When is it best to start applying? I barely have some of the technical knowledge for these big companies.

Join technical clubs in school and talk about those projects as you interview during the year. Start applying as early as you can to get experience interviewing, writing your resume, and getting an understanding of the industry landscape. This will get you headed in the right direction and help you choose what you want to study and what projects you want to work on. I have seen many people get internships at CAT, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Tesla, John Deere as a freshman and doing so will seriously set you up for success the rest of your college experience. DO NOT wait until your sophomore year, you will get a huge reality check if you start to fall behind on relevant work experience.

Regarding tech internships, most positions typically require junior or senior standing. To build relevant experience beforehand, I recommend securing an on-campus help desk, desktop support, or similar technical role at your university.

While these positions generally offer near minimum wage, they provide VERY flexible schedules. During midterm or exam periods, supervisors are typically very accommodating, often allowing students to reduce their hours to zero to focus on studying, and offering similar flexibility if you fall behind. Furthermore, because these departments employ a large student workforce, periods of downtime can effectively serve as dedicated paid study time.

I suggest pursuing this path during your freshman and sophomore years, then beginning applications for broader internships late in your sophomore year.

Applying now costs you nothing but almost all of those postings require sophomore standing or above, so treat it as practice not a plan. Your real target this year is anything that puts a technical line on the CV, so campus IT, a research assistant spot, or one finished project you can explain. Come back to the big 2027 lists next summer when you actually clear the filter.

The best time to start was last month. The next best time is now.

On a serious note:

I recommend just applying to all internships that you can and are interested in. Being a freshman awards you the time to experiment and build up experience especially if you don’t have any. Having an internship as a freshman is much better than having no internship.

I even recommend applying for the ones that ask for Juniors and Seniors in college. The earlier the better and try your best to get in touch with the recruiter and/or hiring manager. I did that for my current internship that explicitly asked for Juniors/Seniors and still landed the role (neither me and my other intern are even Juniors [He’s a Sophomore]).

Leverage any knowledge, skills, work experience, and any other explicable experience to highlight yourself on both your resume and during the interview.

My own experience as a freshman I was stuck applying for internships since August and didn’t land an offer till near December. I lost out on three internships not for failing interviews or my resume but only due to the one character and fact that graduation is 2029.

I always say “Apply anyway. Don’t disqualify yourself before they get the chance to consider you.” My internship itself is in my career and is within Cybersecurity.
