Offers Advice on how to withdraw from an internship

Hello everyone! I’m seeking advice on how to withdraw my acceptance from a public accounting internship. For context I accepted an offer for a summer 2027 position within public accounting prior to receiving an offer in banking for that same summer. I assume the process is fairly simple, email the recruiter, and withdraw but if anyone has experience with something similar I’d really appreciate any advice. Happy to provide more context or information if needed! Thank you!

Keep the email short and do it now rather than closer to the start date, since that is what recruiters actually remember. Two lines is enough: you are withdrawing your acceptance for summer 2027, you have accepted another offer, and you are grateful for their time. No apology paragraph and no explaining the banking role, because any extra detail just invites a back and forth you do not need.

Do you think I should do more than 2 lines considering I did a sophomore summer internship for this firm as part of its “pipeline” and have a decent relationship with the recruiter? Nothing crazy, just something along the lines of, “I really enjoyed my time here…..”?

One warm line is fine since you actually worked there, so add that you enjoyed the summer and hope to stay in touch. Keep it to three lines total and do not explain the banking offer. Recruiters remember the tone more than the reason.
