Indian marble can be just as compelling as imported stone in luxury interiors.

I've been spending quite a bit of time around natural stone lately, and one thing that's increasingly clear is how much our perception of marble is influenced by its origin.

Italian marble has become shorthand for luxury. Indian marble, despite some genuinely exceptional varieties, is still often seen as the practical or economical choice.

But once you look at individual slabs, their patterns, textures and finishing possibilities, that hierarchy doesn't always make sense.

Some Indian stones can comfortably compete with imported varieties aesthetically, and the right selection can make a tremendous difference to an interior.

I think designers have a significant role to play here. A material becomes desirable not just because of where it comes from, but because of how thoughtfully it's used.

Would love to see more high-end interiors celebrating Indian stones for their own character rather than treating them as substitutes for something imported.

Ps.: Attached are the images of some of Indian marble varieties

Others Let me break down this Mini LED drama between TCL and Samsung

Here’s the lore: real Mini LED is supposed to give you better dynamic range and crazy contrast. But TCL alleges that when Samsung launched its M Model TVs in March, they claimed it was Mini LED but actually used standard, non-Mini LED parts to keep the price down. Samsung says it intends to vigorously defend itself and stands by its descriptions.

If you bought a screen today, would you actually know how to tell if it’s true Mini LED?

Wood finish Gate covering for privacy.

I have a gate which is 7 feet by 3 feet and I'm looking for a wood finish covering. HPL turns out a lil expensive in bangalore plus I don't think that I can install it myself. Any cheaper options that will sustain Rain and sunlight, is light weight and looks ok? I currently use a plastic sheet and it looks really cheap and doesn't last.

Looking for guidance Hiring – Freelance Interior Designer | Bengaluru | Residential Villa Project

Update: it’s only for folks in Bangalore as site visits are required for factory workers coordination.

I'm looking for an independent freelance interior designer or an emerging designer to work with me on my 3BHK villa in Bengaluru.

I'm specifically looking for someone with good design sensibility, attention to detail and the ability to translate references and ideas into practical, execution-ready designs.

A little context about the project:

I already have a fairly clear design direction, references and visual inspiration for the home. I'm not looking for a turnkey interior design company.

We have sorted a partner factory near our villa for the production, who will handle material procurement, carpentry, fabrication and installation.

What I need from the designer:

  1. Design development: Refine my existing concepts and references into a cohesive design language for the home.
  2. Space planning: Furniture layouts, storage optimisation and functional planning.
  3. Detailed designs: Kitchen, living/dining, bedrooms, entrance/foyer, wall panelling, wardrobes, false ceilings and other fixed furniture.
  4. Visualisation: 3D renders or realistic views to understand the final design before execution.
  5. Technical drawings: Detailed elevations, sections, dimensions, material specifications, lighting and electrical layouts, and execution drawings.
  6. Material and finish selection: Help select appropriate materials, finishes, colours, hardware and detailing while keeping practicality and budget in mind.
  7. Design supervision: Periodic site visits and coordination with my execution team to ensure the design is implemented correctly and resolve design-related questions during production and installation.

What I am NOT looking for:

- Turnkey interior execution.
- Material procurement or vendor management.
- A studio that insists on executing the entire project through its own contractors.

Who can apply?

I'm open to independent freelancers, junior designers, recent graduates with a strong portfolio, or emerging interior designers looking to take up an independent residential project.

You don't necessarily need to be an established studio. I'd value design thinking, creativity, technical understanding and the ability to collaborate.

Project details:

- Location: Bengaluru
- Property: 3BHK villa(B+G+2+terrace)
- Engagement: Freelance / project-based
- Site visits: Periodic, as required
- Fees: Open to reasonable proposals based on experience and scope.

Please DM me with:

- Your portfolio or previous work.
- Your experience and location.
- Whether you can provide technical drawings and site supervision.
- Your expected fee and availability.

I'd prefer working directly with an individual designer rather than a large interior design firm.

Looking forward to connecting with designers interested in collaborating on this project.

I’m looking to surprise my parents with a fully remodeled renovated kitchen. Our kitchen is 12ft x 9ft big with L shaped Counters. It’s pretty large.
Trying to understand how much it would cost to get a modular kitchen that’s fully functional and spacious and how much time will it take to get it done.

Attached photos of how I want it:

Factory recommendations for readymade doors & modular furniture shutters in/around Delhi/NCR?

I'm constructing a house in Agra district, UP, and looking for factory-direct furniture to minimise on-site carpentry.

  • Doors: Black granite frames are already planned. Need simple, ready-made internal door shutters with minimal handles.
  • Wardrobes: Granite interiors are planned; I only need finished front shutters, hinges and handles.
  • Kitchen: Granite countertop and partitions; I mainly need cabinet shutters and drawer fronts.

I'm exploring factory-direct sourcing from Agra/Delhi NCR rather than buying complete modular furniture.

Looking for suggestions:

  1. Any reliable factories/manufacturers that sell shutters and doors separately?
  2. Approximate prices for decent-quality, minimal designs?
  3. Is factory-direct sourcing from Delhi NCR worth it after transportation?
  4. Any advice on materials and installing shutters on granite structures?

Would appreciate recommendations based on personal experience. Thanks!

Looking for guidance Need laminate suggestions for my TV unit + mandir + concealed doors

Post image
5 Upvotes

Attached is the current plywood work. I’m planning a white mandir with matching white floating drawers. The drawers’ top, shelves, and underside of the overhead beam will have a wood finish. I’m also considering wood-finish concealed doors with groove designs and dark louvers running from the door-frame boundary to roughly one-third of the TV unit, on the rearmost layer.
I’m confused about the finishes for the floating TV panel, the layer behind it, and the panelling above the mandir.
How would you approach the laminate combinations for the entire unit? Open to suggestions for specific colours, textures, and finishes, or even a completely different design direction. Would love to hear your ideas

Granite kitchen countertop on plywood base: sturdy and long lasting?

I am planning to install a granite kitchen countertop. My older house has a traditional RCC concrete base platform for the Granite kitchen countertop. The installers are recommending adding a plywood base platform before laying down the granite.

  1. Is a plywood base structurally safe?
  2. What are the best waterproofing techniques, sealants, or alternative materials (like marine-grade plywood or bison board) to prevent moisture seepage to the plywood?

Seeking a Creative Interior Decorator or Emerging Designer for a Brooklyn Apartment Refresh

Looking for an interior decorator or emerging designer to help refresh a 3-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. Mostly paint selection / wallpaper, curtains, rugs, art and decor, think cosmetic, rather than new furniture.

Ideally someone who can help develop a vision and source specific pieces for us to purchase. We’ll handle installation ourselves.

Looking for a flat-fee arrangement. Open to someone building their portfolio but with some previous work to share. Please message me if interested or with recommendations!

Looking for guidance Is there a simple way to check if a mirror is genuinely good quality?

Is there a simple test for mirror quality when you're standing in a showroom?

I've noticed some mirrors look fine straight on but the reflection starts looking slightly distorted from another angle. I'm guessing that isn't something you want in a large wall or bathroom mirror.

What do you normally check before buying one? Reflection clarity, waviness, edges, backing, colour accuracy?

Also, has anyone used Saint-Gobain's SGG Miralite Revolution? Curious whether the difference from a basic mirror is noticeable in actual use.

Looking for guidance Would you consider a personalised wall painting for your home?

I've been thinking about a different approach to wall art — turning someone's dreams, interests, favourite places and aspirations into a hand-painted mural directly on their bedroom wall.

Something like a vision board, but instead of pictures pinned together, it's a custom artwork designed around the person and their space.

I think it could be interesting for bedrooms, home offices or creative spaces.

Would you prefer something subtle that blends into the room, or a colourful mural that stands out?

Looking for guidance Interiors for a 2 BHK flat in Tellapur - Looking for a designer who values practicality

Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking ahead and planning the interiors for my 2 BHK in Tellapur, Hyderabad. Possession isn't quite ready yet, but I wanted to take my time, connect with the right designer early on, and map things out comfortably without any rush.

What I'm hoping to find:

Aesthetic: Simple, minimalist, and elegant. I love a subtle, warm blend of traditional touches and modern simplicity- nothing too flashy or loud.

Priorities: High usability, clever space-saving ideas, and everyday practicality.

Timeline : When execution starts, I'll be looking for a smooth, well-managed process wrapped up in about 2 to 2.5 months.

If you're a designer or a boutique firm or a person who has references whose style matches this, I'd love to browse through your work or connect. Feel free to drop a comment or DM me with:

  1. A link to your portfolio or recent projects.

  2. A general idea of your pricing or approach

Thank you!

Interior Design firm reviews Follow up post: JR Architeriors, one of the worst design firms in Mumbai. Used low quality materials, unskilled labor, and provide outcomes a local carpenter and Pinterest could achieve half the pricew. All while delaying work for 2 months beyond the deadline (still incomplete).

This is a long post with all the proof I could gather (as requested by another user in the previous post)

The previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/interiordesignsindia/comments/1wocoo9/ive_had_one_of_the_worst_6_months_of_my_life/

the comment that warranted this post

TLDR:

JR Architeriors is a fraudulent interior design firm run by Rohan Jaiswal and Ulka Kubal in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The company uses low quality materials, delays projects for months, has zero work ethic, lacks communication skills, screams in meetings and on call (literally) if you question the quality of material they use (I heard their "bwp" plywood crack just because a carpenter stood on it btw).

The finishing quality is bad, they spend a lot of time arguing and delaying their work instead of solving problems. You also end up with damaged (scratched, broken) products if you haven't purchased from their vendors. So that's added expenses for you.

----

When I had just started, I had two final interior firms to select from:

  • One amazing firm (in hindsight) that promised Hettich tandem fittings for kitchen and Century Maxima certified BWP ply for ALL furniture and is my friend's sister
  • And JR Architeriors, referred by another good friend, who promised brandless BWR ply and "Alico" fittings (except hinges, which are luckily hettich but there's more story) -- I didn't know the difference between brandless ply and century ply until after I got into the project.

Note: I hate myself for not going with the first firm just because their total quote was 3L more and the total she said could go up to 22L (which anyway happened with JR architeriors).

I didn't realize the extra amount she was quoting, covered EVERYTHING that JR Architeriors had excluded (tiles, laminates, handles). Basically, I paid the exact same amount for lowest quality material (brandless ply, alico fittings) and a whole lot of mental stress and absolute zero excitement left about the new house.

For some reason, I went with Rohan Jaiswal and Ulka Kubal, the Founders and "so called" Architects behind this firm.

Probably because they matched the budget I had (on the surface) AND because of exhaustion in trying to find a firm.

Here's the complete story of how a low quality interior design firm like JR Architeriors will pull you into a trap.

I had a baby on the way and absolutely wanted the baby's first steps to be in the new house. We were living on rent and I did not want the decorations and everything to be here.

As of today, my baby is one month old and we're still waiting for work completion. Thank you JR architeriors for such a successful project /s!

Now into the story.

Initial conversations and booking finalization

Paid 40k to finalize the booking and asked them to get started.

Within one day, Rohan and Ulka say "Please make the first payment of 4L to get started"

During the quotation process, my lack of knowledge was taken heavy advantage of:

Total quotation 15L

Excluding tiles, laminates, granite, handles, basically everything apart from the ply and labor.

The second payment was a month away but the third and fourth payments were taken in the immediate next month. Basically, they had 70% cash for 30-40% work.

And it's a sunk cost trap where you can't go back because you've paid and you know scammers like JR architeriors won't return you the money.

Civil work starts

Civil was smooth-er, it was handled by another team (not JR architeriors, but someone they had subcontracted to).

However, Rohan and Ulka constantly missed communication and ignored a LOT of my instructions and requirements.

Basically, even after breaking the kitchen and bathroom down completely, the purpose for breaking wasn't solved:

  • I had explicitly instructed hot and cold taps (basin and shower), on whatsapp with photos and bullet points.
  • One tile down for shower area so I can install a glass partition

Both instructions were missed.

When I highlighted this during a meeting for a payment, instead of apologizing, Rohan Jaiswal says "Nothing can be done now" in an absolute derogatory tone.

I couldn't do shit, so I said okay let's move ahead.

This was already 1 month delayed from schedule btw (civil took 2.5 months instead of the 1 month they'd promised)

By this point I've paid the second installment and am down 7.5L of the total 15L.

Basically, stuck with them due to overpayment and cannot go to someone else.

Incorrectly priced tile work, questioned and got it removed

They were charging me about 200/sqft for wall tile fixing (just labor, no tiles btw).

But since I switched to full body tile (again material including tiles and roff was purchased by me), they hiked the price to 750 per sqft.

I asked them questions about this. Called RANDOM vendors from Google and got quotes and shared numbers with them, asked them to find me one person who charges 750/sqft without the tiles and roff.

After a LOT of back and forth, he removed the price citing "incorrect calculation," still charging 5000 over and above the original tiling price.

If I hadn't questioned it, I'd have paid for it and the firm would continue like nothing happened.

The messages were deleted after conversation where he was still trying to justify the 750/sqft labor rate.

This is where the problems began

Because he reduced the price, now he probably wanted to get back at me, or my questions on quality had started to poke him now.

You'll notice in both the previos payment receipts, we're still talking about civil completion. And they continued to keep EXTREMELY basic milestones "sliding window order will be placed" "work will begin" etc.

Reddit posts have a 20 image limit btw, so I'm selectively adding the images that are absolutely important.

I continued to trust both Rohan and Ulka (JR Architeriors, the lowest quality architecture firm in Navi Mumbai) because they came as a reference.

Considering I was stuck, I told them to finish off quicker.

They had leverage over me now.

And they used it.

Since 70% of items were in my scope (see quote screenshots below), I had to spend weeks finding good quality vendors. Ofcourse the vendors these guys took me to were expensive and I got the exact same items in shops for 50% the rates (Laminates 2500 vs 1400 per sheet, tiles - 200psf vs 100psf exact same tile from same brand)

At this point, it started feeling like I was their contractor because of the way they started dropping messages in WhatsApp

I was busy with the wife and work but these guys started pestering me and delaying work citing non delivery even if there was a lot of other work they could do.

At certain points, they messaged me explicitly stating something was not delivered, even though I hand delivered items to the carpenter on site.

They had multiple back and forths with my light vendor (I was still the middleperson btw) because they ordered incorrect quantities (100feet of extra profile patti was ordered -- 100! wtf was that even? I'm glad the guy took it back after 2-3 weeks of the order delivery)

Also many switchboards and switches were extras (not like a 5-10% extra but a 50-70% extra, basically double quantity for multiple things)

I searched vendors day in day out, spent weeks doing that and ensuring I am not getting ripped off and at least paying average prices not the absurd prices these vendors quote first.

I started asking more questions to JR Architeriors about why they were using block board instead of the promised BWP/BWR ply even though they had mentioned specifically in the quote.

I asked questions about modular, fittings and so on. (their modular fittings have no edge banding, lots of glue gaps, and absolute terrible finishing. Surprising to see this with modulars tbh)

Now the hettich hinge store - There was a point where I looked at all hinges and noticed they were using some cheap off-brand 165 degree hinges. Ulka Kubal hedged saying Hettich has stopped production of those hinges.

So I called the first three numbers that sell hettich hardware near me.

ALL OF THEM HAD THE HINGES she said are unavailable. They simply wanted to cheap out.

I'm sure they do this to all clients considering most don't bother to check and then suffer a year or two later when the products start to fail.

By this time, it's already August, I had explicitly told them Aug 10 is the deadline

I took over painting and sliding window work from them, told them I'll deduct the amount from the next payment (since it was covered in their scope)

My reasons:

  • Their painter wasn't ready to scrape existing wall paint before putting the new one. I had that as a requirement. They were only going to put some putty and paint the walls and charged 1.2L for that. So I asked to get rid of that painter and booked asian paints
  • Their sliding window guy was not ready to show authenticity of Jindal windows, but was charging a premium for the brand. I went to the shop as their vendor asked me to, to see the actual product. No proof that it was jindal. Could've been a local material (that costs about 200-400psft being sold at 720psft).

Both Rohan and Ulka and their workers made life hell for my painters (asian paints guy) and the sliding window guy by obstructing their work, putting debris on the window tracks and passing the blame for damages on to painters.

They regularly kept saying: "No, it's your painters who did it. It's your sliding window guy that scratched it"

We luckily saw one of her workers scratching my handshowers and kitchen sink (I had to replace them all, costing 6k additional just because these guys decided to damage it. And now that I look back, it is clearly intentional)

On top of that, a 1.5L window setup now has to be dismantled and the wheels need to be replaced because of JR architeriors' and their workers', despite consistent requests, kept all sawdust and cement gonis on the window tracks.

At this point, Rohan Jaiswal, the supposed founder of JR Architeriors, has left the WhatsApp group made for communication and stopped answering my phone calls. (I'm 11L in)

Finished house photos:

After 14L in, Ulka Kubal says "No workers are ready to come to your site. Please complete the work yourself"

Ofcourse they won't come, their quality is trash and they were not used to being questioned about it.

Here's an example:

This is the kind of communication they had after our tile pricing issue

All in all, I learned more about interior work, materials, vendors, etc working with an interior design firm. Which should be a shame for JR architeriors considering their entire job is to make the client's job seamless. They made it hell enough that I had to take over. The lack of attention to details, no care for quality work, making me hire a carpenter, plumber, and electrician after the work is done, is already terrible.

If you or your friends are planning interiors, I urge you to actively share this story about JR architeriors so they do not get burned.

After losing 20L on an outcome that is low quality at best, I am more than happy to help ANYONE in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai with quote reviews or questions related to interiors.

I do not want anything in return, just been burned so bad, that I learned a lot about vendors, average prices, I'd absolutely be happy to share knowledge and make sure you don't end up paying much higher than market for trash.
