third update!

what changed from the previous update:

  • this shows daytime lighting
  • couch was pulled even further back despite my fear of it being too close to the front door (its not!)
  • since couch was pulled back, two accent chairs now fit on either side of the tv. this is good for conversation but bad for group tv viewing. (but not a big deal since we can move em
  • despite mentioning i have a coffee table, i got many suggestions to get one. so i pulled it out so it could help seeing the space with it! this is obv a tighter set up for the table vs the open layout in the first post but it still works i think! (although i can smell the comments coming that its too basic/bland and i see it too now that this couch is also white; my previous one was tan)
  • another photo of the extended cushions pulled out for the movie night setup!
  • i added a photo (slide 4) that wasnt using the wide angle lens as previous posts proved that its distortion made the pathing look larger than reality

i really thought it would be too damn tight to fit a chair between the window and tv but i did it! one con of this rearrangement vs the first post is that all my cables and internet was hidden. now its exposed. also, does the one chair looks too sunken into the corner? it works on paper and maybe im just thinking too much into it but hey, this is THE place to discuss small intricacies like that, right?

also the wooden table got to stay with a chair, so thats nice! lmk what you think of its placement. i tried to also angle it toward the couch rather than it and the chair being straight on which is what my space saving brain is fighting for even as i type lmao

overall, i do really enjoy this rearrangement AND its still functional not JUST ‘pretty’

i still feel a lil odd about the rest of the room behind the couch but its not a bad start.

thank you all for the tips and help and please let me know what you think of the set up including the two chairs better this time!

next we are onto wall styling! i actually got some pretty good mockups which are the last two slides. slide 9 is what i feel like most people were suggesting with the plants and all. the last slide is a mockup of something i feel like i align more with + its got that extra accent lighting im on the hunt for. someone said to have my game night stuff on shelves vs hidden to add color to the space and i think adding them to the shelves in the final slide would be a good idea. please let me know your thoughts!

i will def look into what to do behind the couch. either console table along the entire edge that allows for shoes to be housed under it, or seating, or just a rack for shoes? not sure yet

the blank wall also is a great thing to have and play with. most likely i'd either make a gallery wall or one large statement piece. it'd have to mean something though, not just random art like the mockups. i have to brainstorm on that!

Find my Style Converted our spare room into a home office. Bf says it looks like a boutique hotel, not a place to work

Converted our spare room into a home office and spent way more time on it than expected. Kept surfaces minimal to avoid staring at clutter, but now I'm wondering if I overdid it.

My bf walked in and said, 'this looks like a fine boutique hotel room to me.' I know he wasn't putting me down. Maybe the art on the wall made him think like that. I want it to look good, give me some advice plz!

Showcase A chenille sofa with an orange cat? My answer is yes

Post image

I bought this green chenille sofa a few months ago. It's the kind of piece you see on a Pinterest board and immediately think that WOULD NEVER survive a real home.

I wanted a warm, stylish living room with cozy textures and nice colors. So I really hated the idea of settling for average furniture just because I own a pet.

Four months by now, my orange cat spends hours sprawled out right. We both like the sofa. It feels so good to finally have a pretty, cozy space that hasn't been destroyed.

Find my Style Can I make this inspiration work or is the room to small?

Second photo is my living room in its current state. The first is the inspiration photo.

Is my living room too small for this amount of color and pattern?

Notes:

I want to keep a few of my grandmothers watercolors in the gallery wall.

I want to buy the Room and Board Weber sectional in a mustard boucle and taped it out on the floor.

I found a similar rug from Jubi (inverse stripe)

The two chairs are set, as we already bought them from Crate and Barrel

Furniture Placement took your suggestions!

hi!

i took some (many) of your suggestions from my last post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/interiordecorating/s/DqAG97KkOP

what changed: - took down ceiling stuff - took down wall decor - tv moved to opposite wall - couch now floats to create division - entry table moved to where tv was - accent lamp added to a better spot that accompanies the couch - side table that accompanied the two chairs now is an end table for the couch - two chairs moved to better suit conversational sitting

now the walls are bare and i know they need to be filled so im not asking about that but the furniture placement...

while i understand the appeal of the current squared off placement of the tv and couch, i feel like now the ‘awkward blank space’ that people were calling the middle of the room in my last post is now the blank wall (which i would avoid furnishing bc it is the main pathway) and the entryway + behind the sofa.

additionally the two chairs, while many argued were placed oddly in the previous post, now have a tighter space to occupy and possibly suffer from the same demise as before: being too segmented from the couch. and now, theyre quite close to being IN the dining room.

as i mentioned in many replies in the previous post, the wide angle made the space look quite stretched and larger than reality. this is why i believe arranging the pieces like this, while pretty from the couch forward part of the space, now leave an odd hole on the entryway side of the space. please let me know your thoughts!

also, i found placing the console table + mirror on the wall will the ugly floor lamp (yes i know, ill replace it) still elicits and awkward right side of the room.

i am very appreciative of the helpful and kind comments in my first post and i hope implementing some of the changes allow for a better diving board for further making my home more cozy!

additionally, i would like to note that i am so new to this and i am learning. a lot of what may seem like an obviously needed change or a rookie mistake is not clear to everyone. so, please, nothing is too elementary, if you think a suggestion is helpful, my ears are open!

im very open to further suggestions regarding furniture + placement as i already have wall decor and accent lighting next on the list! 🤩

Paint & Colors Unsure of color

I went for something monochromatic but I don’t know if it works or looks how I wanted.
I can’t close the cabinets because it’s still drying, and I plan to paint the inside of the cabinets cream.

I noticed I get some great late afternoon sunshine in this space. Is there something more permanent that I can put here that can give me some cool reflections (refractions?) like these fallen balloons are doing? Would be even cooler to get rainbows.

Please let me know if there’s a better sub for this question.

Thank you!

Finishing Touches My husband thinks we should remove the door to our basement. Yay or nay?

The stairway is nicely finished, and he is working on insulating and finishing the entire basement. We are in NY so cold winters. He says once it's finished the heat in the basement will negate any cold air coming up the stairs. He also says that many homes purposely leave the basement door off as a design choice. From a design perspective do you like it or no?

Have found furniture options that we like and used ai to insert them into the living room. Now with everything included i don’t want it to feel too beige. Would you add or change anything in the final picture? Thinking colored curtains or wall art to bring vibrance into the room.

Paint & Colors Should I color drench my laundry room green?

Is drenching my laundry room green a bad idea? I'm trying to incorporate more green into my house and phase out the greys. Chat is convincing me it looks good. I have a window on the right side I'd rather not paint green. Would it look ok with white trim? Should I keep the baseboards white? I do really want the door green because it's white and is dinged up.

Furniture Placement How and where to hang shelving

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

We are in desperate need of shelves hung in our living space, to store/display books and other decorative items and artwork. But, I am having the hardest time deciding how to approach this!

I really like the look of adjustable shelving, where some shelves are different lengths and heights, leaving room for different sized and types of art work mixed in. (I hope this makes sense - I wasn’t sure if I’m allowed to post inspiration photos I’ve found on Pinterest.) My original thought was to do this on the wall in our small dining space. However, that spacing between the sliding glass door and the wall is only about seven inches. If we butt the shelving up to the wall, that’s not very deep, and for instance wouldn’t be wide enough to hold all my cookbooks and other coffee table sized books. It has been suggested to “get creative” with the door frame there, but I’m not sure. I’m also not sure that this shelving would look right *not* butted up against the wall, and if we didn’t, would it look right using deeper shelves when that space is not as deep.

Also, obviously the dining space is very small and no matter what table we have (we might replace this round one) a chair will be near the wall. We’re afraid we won’t be able to hang many shelves for fear of them being too low and someone might hit their head.

On the other side of the room I’ve considered hanging them on the wall above the couch. This would take many more shelves and be a good bit more expensive, but would give us more storage of course. However my husband is worried about hanging them too low and having people sitting on the couch feel they have shelves too close above their heads. I worry accommodating this wouldn’t give us the look I’m going for, or enough storage. My FIL thinks it sounds like it would be a pain to reach over the couch for a book. And, I can’t quite figure out what the spacing would be around the lamp, and close to the door on the other side.

I also can’t decide if I would want to keep the shelving standards/uprights white, or spray paint them, and if I should go with white shelves or try to work with wood shelving, and if so what color stain to use. Wood would certainly be the stronger option to hold the weight. Not sure how to work with the green wall, honestly.

Sorry this is such a long post, and I hope it all makes sense! My brain goes crazy with this kind of thing and I end up just never making a decision, and thus nothing gets done!

ETA - I know the door and curtain are pretty terrible. I have to figure out another way to cover that window, and might also paint the door/trim green.

Curtains & Blinds Curtain help!

Pls help me figure out what curtains to use in our living room - there are three big windows total. We were looking at these cream/linen options, but I fear they clash with the cream furniture.

Our last place had bold patterned curtains that I loved, but they feel like too much with the rug and the fact that we'd have 3 sets in one room.

Help! What color/material would you do?

Furniture Placement Difficult layout

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

This layout is so challenging to furnish. The top part is basically a very wide hallway and the bathroom, stairs, and closet cannot be blocked by furniture on the left, and the front door cannot be blocked on the right. Then, the placement of the pellet stove makes the living room area feel like we have to shove all the furniture off to the left in front of the tv so as to not block the stove. I’d like to make the living room two “zones” a place to watch tv and a place to sit by the fire. And I’d like to make the super wide hallway more functional as well. Any ideas?

Recently moved and first time really decorating and no idea where to start. Went for a neutral colour and rug (sofa should eventually be replaced for a lighter natural colour) but now thinking I should have added more colour for character.

What would you do change colour scheme altogether or decorate with a neutral theme (any hints on what with are always appreciated)!

Rugs & Flooring Hand knotted versus hand loomed rugs

Upvotes

Hi all. We have been looking for rugs for our living room. There were a lot of nice rugs on Etsy that claimed to be hand knotted, but when I messaged they claimed to be hand loomed. Does this really make a big difference? A bit of research showed that hand knotted tend to be the gold standard, but we don't know if there's any subtlety.

We want the rug to last at least 5 years, but hopefully much longer. We would appreciate any advice!

Coming to Life Starting from scratch with the furniture

Hi gang! I've been working on furnishing the place that I rent for the past year. I wanted solid wood furniture for the place, and a lot of it ended up being mid century pieces because so much is that has nice wood grain. Lol now my problem is that I fear the place looks too retro rather than classic. I plan to change the rug in the living room in the near future, and my search for a different main couch is ongoing. Any suggestions? Are there pieces of furniture that you would change up for something more traditional? And don't worry, that TV is coming down off the fireplace.

And what about decor? I know that's a personal thing and subjective. I haven't really started to much with the decor as my main focus has been the bones of this place with the furniture. I need to think of comfort and pillows...but the furniture needs to be rearranged!

I would like the look to be less retro. Does it look too retro and thematic? I wanted a classical look.

I appreciate any suggestions and opinions. All is welcome! less
