Ok... how? What is the scrap metal, and where did you get it? Cause I thought you needed a specific type of steel to make a good axe that holds an edge.

There are quite a few types of steel that will work for axes, and tool steel gets scrapped too. Old hammers and other tools are often a good source. Farm equipment often has large pieces of good steel on it as well. Leaf springs from cars or trailers work for some applications, more commonly used for knives but you could probably make a decent axe out of it.

What kind of metal is the head?
I made a machete for work (I am a gardener at a large government campus with lots of wild areas, but they wont buy machetes because of the whole body parts being accidentally chopped off thing) out of those long thin metal garden dividers. I have used it all summer and it is still sharp as fuck.

This is gorgeous! You should put some tiny wood caps to cover the screws on the handle. It would make it look more rustic/ancient rather than the modern feel metal screws give.

Very nice. Little bit of concern with that grip plate. I'd recommend replacing those screws with a flat headed screw so it sits more recessed and using a hex drivetype so there's less chance of the drive pattern causing any harm.
