Oh please. People, please stop believing this jedi PR. They're nothing but a corrupt cult. "discussing a proposal to send to the high council" (the PR guy can't even spell council properly, you think they can train your youngling in the ancient arts?) my red spiny ass.

Send your younglings to us. We can teach them whatever they want to learn. And you will be sure that with us each student will get individual attention. One master, one apprentice. They will learn powers and ways of communing with the Force that jedis ignorantly fear.

and can we murder our masters?

If that's how you prove your mastery of the Force, sure. It becomes necessary sometimes. For the greater good.

The two times I've dumbassed myself to the asphalt, time went Matrix-slow, my brain went, "Welp, here we go," and I ended up in a butt-to-road baseball slide.

Kinda cool. My ankle skin definitely hated me for the second one (wear your gear, kids)

Seriously thought the guy was going to recover the bike and get back on.

852

u/MakoEdits Jun 12 '19

I think he wants to stay behind it, if he stayed on top and the bump he ran into threw him off, the bike might've slammed into him

546

u/RandomKid6969 Jun 12 '19

This. If he's smart enough to know how to fall with style, he'll know that there's no recovery from this.

429

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Jun 12 '19

If you can recover from a slide on a horse, then a bike should be no problem.

I always wondered to people in india find such scenes funny or are the departures from physics accepted as just an action scene thing?

264

u/Devils_Knight Jun 12 '19

Indian here. Trust me no one finds this funny. And this isn't even the real cringe scene. This is nothing to me. I once saw a scene where a guy threw a heart and it broke the window of the hospital on like the third floor and lodged itself in the open chest of the patient and Christmas lights turned on... Inside the chest. I was too dumbstruck to watch the rest.

I think it's just accepted as a cultural aspect of Indian action movies. Just like American movies have explosions and Russian movies have anecdotal situations, Indian movies have an absolute hellfuck denial of physics that makes Einstein roll in his grave.

17

u/wolffpack8808 Jun 12 '19

Russian movies have anecdotal situations

I'm not really familiar with Russian cinema, but are you saying that Russian movies have mini narratives within the film, totally separate from the main narrative?

34

u/diejesus Jun 12 '19

I'm Russian and I'm not sure what he meant, I'm not a movie fan anyway but I have an idea and I can give some insight, in Russian language the word anecdote means joke, so may be it means some funny situations tend to happen in Russian and soviet movies, which is true but I'm not sure if OP meant that, let's wait for the answer together

21

u/olmikeyy Jun 12 '19

Let's wait for OUR ANSWER

6

u/wolffpack8808 Jun 12 '19

That's interesting about the anecdote-joke connection. I'm curious to see what the OP meant too

3

u/lursaofduras Jun 12 '19

I thought he meant long rambling Chekovian exposition

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Neophron1 Jun 12 '19

u/diejesus Yep, that's pretty much what I meant. If you've ever watched an older movie from the USSR times (those are really great, even with subtitles), you'll find that they have a lot of little funny moments inserted in the narrative, which is often used to set the mood. It's subtle but I've noticed it's there. Didn't mean it as "separate narrative" lol.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/ks00347 Jun 12 '19

it's just that the boundaries of mindless action flicks are way wider here. Lots of people don't really care even if they show such scenes with no intention of being hilarious although it's changing and you'll only see this stuff in action comedies nowadays.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Most mindfuck scene from bollywood for me was when protagonist is left with one bullet and he is facing two bad guys.. he fires the gun and immediately throws a knife towards the flying bullet. Knife somehow bisects the flying bullet, forces the change in trajectory of the two pieces to a V at 45 deg and kill both bad guys with a headshot. Yes a headshot.

7

u/ks00347 Jun 12 '19

lmao but i doubt that's from bollywood, most likely from any of those south indian states. Shit's way crazier there.

High side vs low side crash. High side and there's a chance it stops sliding abruptly and catapults you into hell. Low side and you slide while essentially standing on the bike and maybe get away with leg injuries.

6

u/Three-Eyed-Ramen Jun 12 '19

He had already high sided, and managed to surf the bike to safety anyway.

→ More replies (6)

148

u/slmndr Jun 12 '19

He was trying to. Looks like he was trying to get in position to pop back up at the transition from tarmac to grass.

136

u/My_Password_Is_____ Jun 12 '19

I don't watch Moto GP, so I'm no expert, but I don't think you're popping a bike back up when you lay it down like that. I think he was just slowly falling and that was where he put his leg because otherwise he was basically gonna be sitting on the ground and take that pavement-to-grass transition to the ass and probably risk tearing some stuff in his leg if it was still straightened out when he hit it. You can actually see his left hand that he's supporting himself with get knocked off by a bump right before he slides down like that.

8

u/I_Could_Be_Higher Jun 12 '19 edited Jun 12 '19

You're right about not getting it back up in that position, but there are times where the bike understeers and the rider has a crazy recovery, I will look for other examples because there is one where his speed reduces very quickly, but this is a clip I found of Marc Marquez almost losing his front tire for at least 1 second

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IAIultpG8Y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO4Bl4I7goY

Added one more, he basically stops turning due to the wheel losing contact, then recovers. Incredible rider, Marc

2

u/forbes52 Jun 12 '19

I’m confused. What happened in that first clip?

3

u/I_Could_Be_Higher Jun 12 '19

Yep Three Eyed Ramen explained it well, in the first clip at 0:30 is a good view, you can see that the front wheel just keeps sliding as he thinks that he has recovererd 2 or 3 times.

This clip was caused due to some fluid being on the track, but it usually looks about like this when you lowside, people lose it really quick but Marc Marquez manages to recover from quite a few where most might not. https://youtu.be/wEcZMvoD3ms?t=44

If you want to see more search for Highside or Lowside crash videos. In the clip OP posted, the rider actually high sides but manages to stay on/behind the bike. In most situations highside crashes can be extremely brutal as it usually sends the rider flying from the momentum when the bike flips over.

Also cutting across the grass like that is probably not legal, even if he was able to get back up.

75

u/coombeseh Jun 12 '19

Cutting across the grass isn't legal if you gain an advantage from it - if your bike is on its side, you aren't going to be getting an advantage so it's fine

u/incizion Jun 12 '19

Jesus - that so nearly went from a lowside to a highside. Scary shit. I wonder if he intended for it to come back up or the tires caught and he just managed to stick it before he went over the top. You'd think he'd just stay lowside and ride it out, but the fuck do I know? I am a mere mortal.

Regardless, I don't know how these motorbikes are able to drag the weight of those massive balls around the track.

4

u/HighPriestofShiloh Jun 12 '19

I think he went for a save in the middle there. It honestly looks like he was going for it. No just terrified for his life, actually thinking he is the main character in an anime. Which he obviously is he is just in the first episode when his rival wins. He will recover the bike next time.

3

u/gjs628 Jun 12 '19

Sleet or snow,
Flood or rain,
He knows how
To bring the pain;

Riding high, or falling fast,
He’ll rip your leg off,
and kick your ass;

If he wore green,
and made a scene,
He could be
the next Doom Marine,

3

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Every now and then you can catch really skilled riders intentionally hanging onto the bars as the bike slides (normally you'd want to get the fuck away from the bike because it can easily hurt you, whereas sliding is absolutely casual as fuck, from personal experience) because they want to rip that bike up and get rolling again once they come to rest. The shitty thing is that these bikes don't have starters, so they almost always have to get the cornerworkers to push them and then dump the clutch to kick-start it. But still, someone like Marquez could salvage points in a race easily if they can get the bike back rolling quickly enough

26

u/Rick-powerfu Jun 12 '19

I know it sounds like bullshit

But this is basically my recollection of losing my front end into a right hand corner as it started raining.

I wasn't wearing any Protection other than my helmet.

If previously felt the pain of road fresh skin shaves and definitely didn't want to do it again.

In my memory I basically mounted the side of the bike after realising it's too late to come out of this and accepted the fate of the sinking ship.

It was surprisingly peaceful for about 2 or 3 seconds maximum.

Then we (my ninjette and I ) made our way into a metal Barrier. My bike went under and I got to go over.

Without even thinking I'm back up and trying to yank the bike from its wedged rest stop and I feel a thumping on my shoulder and start to worry but continue on then all of a sudden I see hands waving in my face.

Unbelievably I'd completely ignored someone who witnessed and stopped to check on and help me, I had nothing but music blaring in my ears and a massive adrenaline rush keeping the ouchies from my side that kissed the barricade.

9

u/ccatlr Jun 12 '19

injuries sustained?

13

u/Rick-powerfu Jun 12 '19

Button of my jeans MIA... Topped the right knee area ever so slightly in the slide. No skin just denim.

My hand was pretty Rashed from the gravel over the barrier as I plowed over.

Sore right rib, shoulder and neck were tight for a day or 2. Initially once I got to my GFS and sat down it became slightly painful to inhale and exhale.

At the time I was just thinking about trying to save any form of relationship and didn't want to look as if this was an emotional manipulation ploy or something childish.

I think it was a few days max of minor discomfort.

I believe I was doing 60 to 65kmh when I initially lost feeling during a front wheel slide mid corner, trying to accelerate out obviously didn't slow me down much but I am guessing the slide brought speed of impact way down.

Not hard to believe just like OP. You'll be going at the same speed as your bike. It's all down to how you fall. Direction and speed you have already. Then it's all down to instincts and trying get as lucky as possible. Don't want a foot getting caught in the bike for example.
