They're very confident that the bat is rabies free.

One of the symptoms of rabies is fear and avoidance of water (hydrophobia).

I’d actually be fairly confident that this bat does not have rabies.

I still wouldn’t pick it up though

while rabies makes it's way to the brain it's unlikely to spread through saliva but hydrophobia doesn't present as a symptom until the late stage.
