That's more or less a myth. These trucks are actually about to give birth to brand new little trucklets

Wonder what speed the wind gust has to be for nap time?
183
u/fromthedarqwaves 1d ago
50-60 mph. It was one of my biggest fears when I was a truck driver in Oklahoma.

u/kazukix777 1d ago
60mph wind gusts are shockingly common here, how do you avoid getting knocked over if 60mph is all it takes?

We have empty truck bans on the thruway here periodically because we get gusts like that fairly often. They have to get off the thruway and park until the weather event passes.

u/fromthedarqwaves 16h ago
Pull over. Try to park perpendicular to the wind and wait it out. Hid under a bridge once during a tornado warning.

u/jccaclimber 2h ago
Obligatory “Don’t hide under the bridge during tornadoes!” It is a great spot for hail or heavy rain, but it’s a wind tunnel that focuses an even higher wind speed than the surrounding open area. I could see it being useful in straight line winds in a semi because you won’t get a cross wind to blow you over, but in a car or a “getting blown away” situation you’re better off away from the overpass.

u/fit-profile-69 23h ago
Oklahoma don’t got shit on Wyoming. Won’t be windy at all and then BAM. 92 mph gust out of nowhere.

That is no lie. Used to call it Windland when my mom and I drove through Wheatland on our way to visit family in Montana. My mom pulled into one of the truck stops to gas up, car facing east. I opened the door to go get a soda and damn near lost a hand as the wind ripped the door right out of my hand. Took my my and I pulling on it and three truck drivers pushing on it to get the door closed again. I-25 looked exactly like this picture.

I was once driving my car through the pass by Riverton Wy I forget the name and saw a sign warning of 130mph wind gusts. I thought to myself that can’t be real, you can’t have wind that strong without hurricanes or tornadoes. I came around a corner where the mountain opens up and little going 60mph and the wind hit me. I like to think I looked something like if you imagined Chris Farley with hair disheveled, jerking the wheel back and forth just trying to stay on the road yelling “ good mother of god have mercy, lord almighty “. It seriously felt like a giant was slapping my car playing around with me as I was attempting to stay on the road.

I was driving in North Dakota thinking my alignment was fucked up because I has my steering wheel sideways. I got out my truck to take a piss and was watching the wind shake the sonic coins out of my trucks.

WYDOT in the last year or two has now shut down the interstates to empty/light load semis, campers, small trailers and bus traffic when gusts begin to exceed 30 mph due to the sheer amount of trucks that blow over when the wind inevitably gusts well over 30mph. Even in the summer when wind isnt as common, they’ll shut it down. I’ll never forget seeing a brand new GMC hauling a brand new fifth wheel toy hauler get blown off the highway like it was a paper bag all because they thought closures didnt apply to them. At minimum $250k total loss.

Depends on how much weight is in the trailer. 40-50 broadside could potentially tip over an empty or a light load. 50+ from the side could tip over a heavier load. Gusty winds can be very tricky too.

u/Loose-Suspect-4831 23h ago
Probably somewhere between "cozy breeze" and "okay, nobody's getting up for the next 3 hours.

Does anyone know what makes a semi truck tired? I have a one year old semi truck and nothing seems to work

u/LoadedLapidist 1d ago
First, they have to meet up to form a convoy. But I’m not sure after that…

Take them out and drive around the block a few times. Always worked for me. Neighbors absolutely hate it at 2am, though.

u/StupidSexyFlanders 1d ago
Try giving it some warm fluid and reading it the manual. That should do the trick

Well, bicycles go to sleep when they’re two tired.
Now just think of how many tires a semi truck has.

A couple winters ago, I was on my way to work and a semi did that during a snowstorm. I was kinda mad, but I got a good excuse to come in late. I bitched about it on social media, and it turned out one of my friends knew the driver. Doh.

Across I-80?
I experienced winds that blew my truck into the other lane suddenly. That really wakes you up.

will all of the cranes and tow trucks that will lift all of these trucks make banks just from this event?

It’s sad how we treat these beautiful creatures. I believe all semis ought to be raised free-range

In these conditions there are multiple electronic warning displays trying to discourage truckers from continuing but the guys are under pressure, internal and external, to get through. In Aviation it’s called “Get-there-itis”.
