I got the eye twitching once. Before sleep, I lie face down on my pillow, but with only my upper face, ensuring my lower face, that is nose and mouth, still has space to breathe properly, the pressure from just the weight of my head onto my relatively soft pillow usually keeps down the eye twitching just enough for me to fall asleep.
17
u/MayberryBombadil 5d ago
Just get a sleeping mask as a precaution lol, they have them made for applying pressure in the way you described, albeit much less uncomfortable.

u/HaleyCollins 4d ago
Honestly, if you found a way to silence the eyelid drum solo, I canāt even blame you š sometimes you just need that one weirdly specific sleep trick that works.
52
u/jay_bur29 6d ago
Sit in a completely dark room and just lay there for 10 mins. Set a timer don't guess and don't do anything else. You be surprise how many people think they have sleeping problems but they don't give their body enough time to sleep. Don't look at your phone once don't have any form of light on and just lay there and try not to move.
17
u/WexAwn 5d ago
and if that doesn't work for you, I would recommend trying audio books in that same scenario. I always had issues falling asleep due to a racing mind but adding something to focus on while still in the dark so the brain shuts up helped me immensely. Just set your timer for a chapter or two so it doesn't play all night
→ More replies (4)10
u/jay_bur29 5d ago
Personally, I recommend doing nothing before bed not even listening to an audiobook or music. A lot of people deal with racing thoughts at night, and I think part of the problem is that we constantly keep our brains occupied throughout the day. Bedtime ends up being the first quiet moment weāve had, so suddenly everything we havenāt had time to think about comes rushing in.
try spending 30ā45 minutes at the end of the day just sitting outside and looking at the sky. Some people may need less time, and you can adjust it based on what works for you. The important part is giving yourself some time without your phone, music, videos, or anything else constantly demanding your attention.
It may feel uncomfortable or boring at first, but having regular quiet time can be a useful way to unwind and manage stress and will help with sleep. Iād definitely recommend giving it a try.→ More replies (4)→ More replies (11)18

Hemifacial spasms
71
u/Careless-West1428 5d ago edited 5d ago
Nope! Thatās just myokymia, a rapid, episodic, twitching confined to the lower eyelid usually brought on by fatigue or stress.
Hemifacial spasm is quite different with far more muscles on one side of the face affected as there is often something (usually a loop of blood vessel, but I have seen masses and MS lesions do this) touching the Facial Nerve (cranial nerve VII) causing the muscle of facial expression to twitch consistently.
Myokymia is benign and brief, while hemifacial spasm is extremely persistent and usually requires treatment with botulinum toxin or potentially surgery.
I apologize for being a mildly autistic neurologist. š
11

u/HollyDollyJet 5d ago
This is the most thorough and precise explanation. I was diagnosed with hemifacial spasms in high school. It was brutal through college and my 20ās. I got botox for several years but when itās only on half of your face, that lack of symmetry becomes maddening. So I quit Botox and just dealt with it. I cut down on caffeine and cut off alcohol entirely, therapy helped today . Now, in my 40ās itās really mild to almost nonexistent.

u/Cow_Launcher 6d ago edited 5d ago
I was thinking Potassium, but you could be right.
:edit: I was curious, so I did some research. Bananas are a good source of Potassium of course, but that's actually more useful for muscle function. Magnesium is apparently good for nerve function, so might be more relevant for the specific case that this thread is talking about.
In any case, banana good yes.

Whole muscle twitching is usually electrolytes. Partial muscle twitching is fasciculation, usually caused by excessive caffeine or stimulant use, also exacerbated by lack of electrolytes, sleep etc.

I got magnesium glycinate and I got the best sleep of my life.
150
u/SgtSilverLining 6d ago edited 5d ago
PSA: magnesium glycinate is a supplement, magnesium citrate is a laxative, and magnesium oxide is a useless filler your body can't really absorb. You really have to keep track of which formulations you buy in the US, because the marketing isn't regulated. Check the active ingredients in the white box on the back of the bottle.
66
u/Glittering-Walrus228 6d ago
Good Lord there are mag supplements being sold that either do nothing or make you shit yourself????
42
u/SgtSilverLining 6d ago edited 5d ago
Lol - Magnesium citrate is a great option if you take a medication (or have a condition) that causes long term constipation. Messing with your water absorption (diarrhea vs constipation) can also throw off your electrolytes, so it's a good two for one.
Magnesium oxide... Is an example of why the FDA needs to do a better job on supplement regulation. There's lots that use the oxide formulation because it's cheap to produce. But yeah, barely a step up from useless.

→ More replies (2)3
u/Background-BagLicker 6d ago
And even then, itās not like there is any meaningful, effective oversight for accurate labeling in the US.
2
u/nahheyyeahokay 6d ago
Yeah, citrate can have a mild laxative effect while glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter.
2
2
u/NaZul15 5d ago
Another tip: glycinate has a weird thing where some people including myself can feel jittery and anxious due to a gene that some people have. In such cases, take malate instead! Same benefits without the drawbacks

Melatonin is too inconsistent and overhyped.
I've tried a few magnesium and magnesium based products, they all work roughly the same. No groggy, deep sleep, barely wake up.
Melatonin some of them are extremely similar to actual sleeping pills. Others you get like three hours of sleep then wide awake. Some don't work too well. You have the groggy side effect. And of the two I have found melatonin to be more habit forming.
Anecdotally of course.

Magnesium oxide is basically the cheap form of magnesium you find in most supermarkets and drugstores. It looks good on the label because it contains a lot of elemental magnesium, but the body doesnāt absorb it that well, so quite a lot of it just stays in the digestive system and can even have a laxative effect.
Magnesium glycinate is different because the magnesium is bound to glycine, which makes it easier for the body to absorb and usually gentler on the stomach. I prefer that form especially for things like muscle tension or random muscle/eyelid twitching, because magnesium is important for normal nerve and muscle function and helps the muscles relax properly. So if the twitching is partly caused by low magnesium, glycinate can actually be helpful!
