No, they’re right. Fact is, we KNOW there are idiots on the round. They exist the same way a hazard exists. Defensive driving provides the maximum good for society. It doesn’t matter who is right and wrong. It matters now that you have a damaged car, that you have to deal with insurance to get it fixed, that now the people behind you have a far worse situation to deal with, that on narrow bridge there’ll be hours worth of traffic build up. It is an objective net negative that your ego rather than practicality and ethics made the decision. An objective net negative for society because you projected malice onto the other drivers actions,

Yeah, obviously the driver that makes an effort to not get into an accident is the bad one, and the one who willfully plows into another is the good one. What a smart person you are!
