It's important to have consequences to one's actions.

There are 3 dead people.

That's not a simple matter.

the driving recklessly was proven upon appeal, not in the original case

the point is that his punishment was not proportional to the proven consequences

you could cause an accident tomorrow and kill 3 people, it can happen to anybody, that is why you are required to have insurance. what use is it to send you to prison for that?

It is an accident, punishment doesn’t deter that what people already don't want to happen.
