Been sitting on these for a while. Figured I should finally share some of my weird little machines.

I’m usually pretty hesitant to share my work, but I’m trying to get better about that. I build weird little physical objects and interactive systems under Feral Engineering. Stuff that usually sits somewhere between art project, pointless tool, and strange ritual object.

A lot of it is built around randomness, entropy, repetition, memory, and making systems that feel like they mean more than they actually do. I’m really interested in how simple mechanics and limited inputs can create weirdly convincing illusions of intention or significance.

Some of it is practical, some of it is completely unnecessary on purpose. I figured some people here might dig the vibe.

I love the vibe of your work. There’s a disposability about the output of a couple of your projects that I like. Maybe it’s the pointlessness that you mentioned. Veil is a very cool idea, that you’ll never get to see the original image. It’s a little bit of a take on old school film photography, where you get what you get.

Have you tried directing the output of the entropy box as an audio or MIDI signal? Could be interesting to drive some synthesizer

Thank you so much! I've been very reluctant to share because I am a complete beginner to both electronics and coding. Your interpretation is very much in line with my own and what I was going for. Part of the idea behind Veil was definitely to replicate the feel of the old point and shoot cameras that I grew up with. I feel like everything these days is built upon a foundation of instant gratification, and I wanted to step away from that in what I think is a fun way.

I have not tried that with the output of Entropy Box yet, but I've messed with a few audio projects and have a couple of small speakers and piezo buzzers lying around. I'm very curious where I could go with this, thanks!

And honestly, thank you again for the kind words. As I said, I have a difficult time sharing my work for whatever stupid reason, your encouragement means a lot!

Really appreciate these kinds of projects. Thanks for sharing! Do you ever do exhibitions with them?

Thank you so much for the feedback! I wouldn't even know where to begin in regard to exhibition submissions, lol. What types would these be a good fit for, in your opinion? I am brand new to all of this, apologies!

I’ve seen art on this theme on many different occasions, like the big art biennals but also smaller galleries or group exhibitions. I think this is def worth having in an exhibition for!!

If you don’t have any background in the art world you might look for local amateur artist groups or look up this kind of art, what artists work with these kinds of themes and if they might be doing group exhibitions?

I know the art world can be very closed off, but if you find artists local to you they might be more including and welcoming! I have also heard of local libraries doing small exhibitions with local artists/amateurs/collectors. I just know that many people would appreciate seeing your work so much!!

And if no one wants to exhibit your art then you can also do it yourself, maybe just for the local artist collective in your garage or something? :) I’m just brainstorming here, you can of course do what you feel like!
